I never thought that Jamie would improve my fitness...
I do 20 minutes on crosstrainer every morning, and watch something on my ipad at the same time to stave off the boredom.

As I am VERY unfit, I usually scrape 20 minutes but this morning managed 30 minutes because I was so engrossed!
Saving the second half of the episode for tomorrow morning!

Anyone else think that Jamie looked a bit hobbit-like without his socks on? Confused

SH did a great job of portraying Jamie as older. Some fans are going mad because they’ve given him glasses and don’t think he’s old enough for them but DH has perfect eyesight then started needing them when he was around 41-ish so I think it was a nice touch.

I began to need reading glasses when I was in my early forties so I think that's a very authentic touch. Also, as a printer, he would have been doing a lot of very close to work that might have accelerated his need for reading glasses. And I thought he looked particularly fetching in them.Grin

I loved the Printshop, too, it looked so beautiful. I really liked the way the screenwriters had cut down some of extra stuff, like Claire's dress being ripped and all that guff about her in the House of Joy with no clothes. The breakfast scene was very funny.

Early 40s is quite normal for reading glasses (in Book 7 or 8?, both J & C get spectacles from Edinburgh). Being a printer with candlelight would play havoc with your eyesight.

A lot of the dialogue during the reunion is straight from the book, I think. I liked the beginning showing Jamie's pov, as it helps reinforce his shock. He lives a pretty dangerous life as a traitor, publisher of seditious materials and smuggler, as he doesn't have much to lose. Then Claire comes back into his life, and I'm sure there's a bit in the book, where he says he'd forgotten how to feel fear.

I agree that it's a shame we didn't see more emotion over Brianna's photos, or see Claire give him Brianna's kiss. I wonder if it was a deleted scene.

The printshop was the rejigged apothecary set. I seem to be picking bits all the time (I actually really loved this episode) but I wasn’t too keen on the printed credits at the start. Seemed a bit gimmicky.

We may not be getting Laoghaire for another couple of episodes. I don’t know how they’re going to fit everything in if that’s true. Also hope Murtagh makes a reappearance at some point this season.

And Ned Gowan. Love Ned (and Bill Paterson).

I liked the way Sam played Jamie in the reunion scene. It was as though he was working through a veil of deep shock, not quite believing that Claire was there. So his restraint, even with the photos, seemed to make sense.

How many episodes are in this season, because we are barely a 3rd of the way through the book.
I have to say I am so glad they skipped the whole Claire has no clothes bit. It really was quite tacky.
I took the lack of emotion from Jamie in the photos seen down to the shock of it all. At that point, its only been an hour at most since he saw her again. Also, the photos themselves would have been confusing and strange, along with how they look in them. I will be interested to see if he treasures them in the same way as he does in the book?
Loved the breakfast seem. Absolutely perfect. Fergus was lovely and I thought Ian wasn't bad either. I prefer this depiction of Mr Willoghby. I hope they don't bring in all the stupid feet stuff.

I'm going to have to rewatch this again.

I suppose Claire has had months of preparation for this whereas it’s just sprung on Jamie. Although, (and I hate to be that person Grin) this is one of the things that was better in the book.

Yy, the printshop and brothel are about a third of the way through Voyager. They seem to have deliberately padded out the earlier bits for dramatic effect and to give more of a sense of what happens in Claire's life with Frank, a lot of which happens in lots of flashbacks throughout later books. I can see how it might be hard to film that way.

Claire has had the opportunity to wrap up various aspects of her life, her job, house, Frank's death etc. so that she is free to come back. She also has researched aspects of Jamie's life, so she knows that he lived in a cave, spent time in prison etc. Jamie knows nothing of her.

I liked Claire's explanation to Fergus, I thought Jamie/you were all dead and I went to America. Sort of true.

I will have to watch again, I think.

@BreakfastAtSquiffanys This episode is 70 minutes so your training tomorrow will be even longer if you want to watch the rest of the episode.
@ToniMumsnet There are 13 episodes this season.
I’ve forgotten so much of the rest of the book. Think I only really concentrated up to the reunion.

I've just been reading some of the comments on Facebook and everybody is blathering on about Jamie not breaking down over the photographs. I realize that anytime we talk about realism in the context of a story that is about time travel, it seems a bit odd, but I think that Jamie's reaction in the show is much more emotionally realistic than what happened in the book. He still not quite believing that Claire has returned and he is deeply shocked. And Brianna is not quite real to him, but Willie is.

I agree, Seneca. The mad women are out in force on facebook, again. They seem to want everything to be exactly the same as in the books and get all huffy if it's not. I loved how Sam played things out today. He is shocked and worried and can't believe it's real, no wonder he hasn't broken down yet. The whole thing has still to sink in. I thought it was beautifully done.
Unfortunately, even Sam said Brianna's name incorrectly - I may have shouted at the telly thenBlush

Just seen on Twitter that DG didn’t like Jamie telling Claire about Willie now. But she said it wasn’t her call.

Ok, its much much better for a second watch!

And it ended on a cliffhanger, who's going to come in and save her? The whole smuggling/paying off everyone/getting chased by everyone was a bit confusing in the book, I trust them to rejig it so it all makes sense. And I hope the don't burn down that beautiful print shop set.

I was going to reread voyager as each episode played, but have decided not to, and just to enjoy the show from here on in!

It is a great episode, and they were all fab!

I loved it! Even the wee glasses.

I think going to pieces could have been really daft and melodramatic, absolute shock was how it came over to me. Can't remember when Claire found out about Willie in the book, didn't mind it where it was. Mr Willoughby was a relief.

LOVED Geordie. I presume him and his goiter will be back. there's a sentence I never thought I'd be happy to type

Nose bump and general awkwardness was all brilliant.

All is right with the world now :)

I was a bit disappointed if I'm honest. There was too much left out and I didn't think the meeting again was how I imagined it and was a bit laboured.

If we're on Episode 6 out of 13, but it's about a third of the way through the book, perhaps the screenwriters will streamline all the stuff on the ships to get to the end in 7 more episodes Grin.

I think the next episode will be smuggling stuff and then Lallybroch. According to Wikipedia, some episodes names TBA.

LonelyOversharer · 23/10/2017 20:59

I think they did the slow undressing thing to mirror the wedding. It wasn't as sensual as that sequence was, but it would be hard to beat tbf.

So an episode on the smuggling then to Lallybroch, cliffhanger on Leerie arriving?
Then some silly ship stuff. Fingers crossed they do that really well will they have found a tame pelican?

Report
snozzlemaid · 23/10/2017 21:00

Yes I think Lallybroch next episode too. Steven Cree tweeted ‘double Murray next week’

Wonder why they left out Ian sr coming to the brothel. I liked that scene in the book.

TV-Mr-Willoughby gives me hope for the silly ship stuff.

13 episodes is not enough though!

And no surprise that this episode, like the wedding one, was directed by a woman.

The only complaint I had was Fergus' (non) hook. Why didn't they give him his hook??
