On DG treating her characters badly, at the end of one of the books (I forget which ones as they kind of blur into one on my Kindle) there's a book group q & a with DG, where she says readers always tell her how much they hate Black Jack Randall, and she says she smiles to herself because she is Black Jack Randall. I think that probably explains a lot. It does give the stories plenty of (melo)drama. But yes, it was a very brutal and dangerous time to live in.

I think the Laoghaire situation gives Jamie's "are you coming back to be my wife" question more meaning, combined with the suggestion that he will contact Ned Gowan. If Claire comes back and lives with him as his wife, presumably he can annul his unhappy marriage to Laoghaire. I just find the whole situation a bit clumsy, as if DG thought it would make a great scene and then wrote in the rest after. I really dislike the way Laoghaire is written in as fat, faded and frigid. I hope the screenwriters make it a bit more nuanced.

GreatWhites · 24/10/2017 20:30

she says she smiles to herself because she is Black Jack Randall

erm. Well. Definitely off the 'people I'd invite to dinner' list then. How bizarre Confused

I don't know if DG means for the Jamie/ Lheery (bloody impossible name to spell)marriage to be more of a reflection of marriage at the time- a convenient arrangement rather than love. Jamie definitely talks to Claire (think it's when Dougal's wife dies) about people marrying for political reasons rather than love.

Jamie was supposed to be laird etc. His sense of honour is different from ours/Claire's. Leorhryghhghg needs someone to look after her. For us it is a shit reason to get married but I think that's with modern eyes.

The big problem is that Jamie knows about the witch trial.

Waytoogo · 24/10/2017 20:36

Just finished episode 6 and loved it, I thought the acting was fantastic.

I thought the photo scene was touching and realistic. Jamie had Claire and Bri sprung on him (not to mention the invention of photography) and seemed to be struggling to make sense of everything. By blurting out about Willie to Claire, he was trying to rationalise things and share with her something very precious to him.

Sex scene was back on Season 1 form; loved it. The "Don't you want to eat?" [Knowing look] "Eye" part made me weak at the knees Blush.

Only serious complaint was SH's hair. Why why why?

Lessstressedhemum · 24/10/2017 20:40

He's a good Catholic boy with a very strong sense of duty. It must have really pained him to leave Laoghaire. Even years later he still sends her money from the new world and provides for her daughters. He is a man of his word. Claire coming back means that he was never actually legally married to Laoghaire, so it would let him off the hook, if he were that kind of Man. I think it's a bit poor that she is written as a fat, frumpy, frigid Harrison while Claire is all glamour, sex and righteous fury.

I'm watching it again. My, Jamie looks good in a tricorn.

DryWhiteagainW · 24/10/2017 22:57

Just watched it and very happy indeed.

Thoughts:

I'm not liking the wigs.
Agree Claire's hair was crazy when she undid it.
Do not like Jamie in socks and shoes, was relieved to see him buckling up his sexy knee boots at the end miss his kilt
Loved Fergus....he's studied young F manerisms to perfection.
Like Young Ian, gangly, sweet, young.....
Was so happy to see the photos.....
SH is brilliant......the reunion was amazing. At times it was as if Jamie was breathing her in. CB and SH have incredible chemistry....just their gazing is incredible.
I think his bigger pecks are deliberate to make him appear older.....

Will watch again tomorrow.

breadwidow · 24/10/2017 23:29

Just watched it again for the second time, DH doesn’t get my obsession at all.

I’ve not read the books so my views may reflect that

Overall I thought it was great though perhaps not as great as I hoped but that’s mainly due to the massive build up.

I think SH & CB’s chemistry was wonderful. It would be tense and tentative and that’s there but you can also see the intense longing. I haven’t seen acting like that anywhere before really, and it kinda ruins you for other couples on TV, no one has their chemistry!

Like others, I also loved the Older Fergus, especially the way a Scottish accent has got mixed in with his French one.

My main complaint was it was still too short, I want more!

I didn’t notice the wigs there first time round but did on the second viewing - why did they bother with one for Claire/catriona - previous seasons it was her real hair right?

breadwidow · 24/10/2017 23:30

Am also missing Jamie’s kilt, though I like bigger pecs Wink

Lessstressedhemum · 24/10/2017 23:58

Bigger pecs and more defined abs are awesome. He is the only man in the world who makes a tricorn look sexy. Just watched it again and the acting is incredible. The longing in their eyes, Sam's breathing, everything. And the best bum on telly into the bargain.
I think people are disappointed because of the hype. The HH and Outlander groups have built it all up into something impossible to live up to. I thought the whole thing was beautiful, so much raw emotion.
Agree Fergus is lovely and Ian is very sweet. Let's hope John Bell grows into the stronger aspects of ian'character as time goes on. HH are complaining that Fergus is too tall Hmm

FridgeCut · 25/10/2017 00:01

It was perfectly awkward, the trepidation and love was just palpable between them. I am hoping they'll be keeping up the making up for lost time. More bare bum time is a must :)

SenecaFalls · 25/10/2017 00:19

There are so many lovely things to notice and savor on second or third viewing. The look on Fergus's face when he sees Claire recalls how much he loved her as a child.

SeveredPixieBits · 25/10/2017 01:18

I've just read that Nell Hudson is 26! Shock She's going to have to act her socks off to be believeable as the fat, frumpy, mother of teenagers.

SeveredPixieBits · 25/10/2017 01:19

How did your dodgy party go Seneca? Wink

Fantasticmissfoxy · 25/10/2017 01:22

Rewatched it and much preferred it second time round 😊
Wigs are ghastly - they need to sort them out

SenecaFalls · 25/10/2017 03:53

Severed The party went well. We did have one guest who knew nothing about Outlander. His wife had tried to bring him up to speed but he needed some help with the back story. Too bad I can't post video of some of his reactions as we explained. Grin

AKAmyself · 25/10/2017 07:13

I’m starting to fear for my sanity lassies. Watching outlander on a loop, re-reading the books, listening to the podcasts. It’s literally all I want to think about! I need help, yes?

quirkychick · 25/10/2017 07:24

AKA you may not be the only one Wink.

I need to watch it again, I think. The tentative bits were definitely from the book, I'm glad they kept them in, it keeps a bit of realism and humour. The fainting, the alepot, bashing noses. Offsets the passion Grin.

Seneca that sounds funny, not the best episode to try to jump into Outlander, half way through season 3...

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/10/2017 07:42

why did they bother with one for Claire/catriona - previous seasons it was her real hair right?

I'm not sure. In all her red carpet appearances and interviews she appears to have fine, dead straight hair. I know she could be straightening it but even so, it doesn't look as thick as her tv hair.

Lessstressedhemum · 25/10/2017 09:00

Just to lower the tone a bit -

"Oh God, yes!" = spontaneously combusting underwearBlush

Aka, my sanity ran away long since.

JuneFromBethesda · 25/10/2017 09:06

The look on Fergus's face when he sees Claire recalls how much he loved her as a child.

I think this is actually one of my favourite bits. I suppose when you think about it Claire is the closest thing Fergus ever had to a mother. Just lovely to see them back together again.

EvilTwins · 25/10/2017 09:24

I have watched and re-watched seasons 1 & 2 on dodgy download and was beside myself when I realised I could see season 3 on amazon prime. Only up to episode 4 so far.

CiderwithBuda · 25/10/2017 09:31

I watched it the other night. And am getting obsessed again. Early this year I watched series one and two. Then I read the books. I had read them in the 90s but got a bit fed up and never bothered with the most recent one. So I read them all again. Then read Voyager again. Then started back at Outlander and read them all again. I have an Outlander Ounterest board. And I follow SH and CB on Twitter.

Wish someone would lock DG in a room till she finishes the next one.

Someone tagged SH on Twitter and said he was a bad, boring homosexual actor. He replied that boring and homosexual don't go in the same sentence. His fans were very defensive of him!

iamdivergent · 25/10/2017 09:44

AKA and Cinder I'm new to the random. And am totally obsessed. Dh watched printshop with me as toddler didn't nap during the day Monday so I am looking forward to a rematch where I canmproper gawp at that fine man's arse. He's was born in the region I live... Wink I wonder if he'll ever come to any UK Comicons?

Lessstressedhemum · 25/10/2017 09:54

There is a small section of the Outlander fantom that is obsessed with Sam's sexuality. They look for proof that he is gay and froth that a gay man couldn't possibly play Jamie. Apparently, if you're gay, you aren't able to play a strong, sexy, passionate man who loves his wifeHmm

It disgusts me. In what way is sexuality relevant. Surely people should just want Sam to be happy regardless of who he is with.

OP posts:
FridgeCut · 25/10/2017 09:59

How sad, they really do live in a fantasy land where they think there is a chance SH will stumble upon them and whisk them away to live out Outlander (the safe bits!) for all eternity. I mean we all have the fantasy but, I know realistically at 34 with two very small kids (and a husband..) I won't exactly be turning his head if he is into women anyway!
