So, only a matter of a few weeks left before we can all, once more, immerse ourselves in the societal & economic dynamics of 18th century rural Cornwall perve at Aiden Turner's snug breeches and clenched jawline

Anyone else excited??? Am really going to make a vair serious effort to actually pay attention to the plot this time - it's something to do with tin mining, I think [hesitant]

The dialogue is so trite and clichéd too. DH is a terrible writer IMO

Sunnymeg · 17/06/2017 14:54

It would have been better if they had just recycled the script from 1975/77. I know the original series took some liberties with the story, but you could see the sense of them even if you didn't agree with them. Personally I am dreading Morwenna's story, as I think they are going to fudge it.

ShelaghTurner · 17/06/2017 16:42

I'm already expecting Ossie to be crap.

And when Drake met Morwenna I just kept yelling Bluebells FFS! Where are the bluebells?? God knows what my neighbours thought Grin

snozzlemaid · 17/06/2017 17:11

It is disappointing as the first series was so good. It had such promise.
I'm still enjoying it to a certain extent and understand that they can't stick exactly to the book but it's just lacking something.
I didn't like the wedding before Dr Enys went off to sea. I think it was unnecessary to change that.
Jud in this version has been a complete failure. I never took to Phil Davis playing him as I honestly don't think you can better Paul Curran from the 70's version. He's such a big character it's not right without him. Apparently PD chose to go off and film something else so he was written out of this series.
I did think that Geoffrey Charles was great though. I love the team of him and Aunt Agatha against George.

ShelaghTurner · 17/06/2017 17:18

I saw David Delve (the 70s Sam) in the theatre a few weeks ago and he would have made a brilliant Judd. He's aged in just the right way. It would be hard to better 70s Jud though, he was comic genius.

ShelaghTurner · 17/06/2017 17:21

It's lacking the humour for a start. They used to be able to combine both but it's so serious now. Ross is awful - 70s Ross was a prat but you never disliked him. You wanted to punch his lights out sometimes but you never hated him like you do this one.

And George is too pretty. George should be well built and solid and not very graceful. Where's the bulldog neck? Not complaining about the actors themselves, it isn't their fault but they're not very well cast at all.

beguilingeyes · 18/06/2017 18:24

I worry that they're going to sex up Drake and Morwenna. I already hate that that made Caroline up for a quick shag in a grubby inn with Dwight.

beguilingeyes · 18/06/2017 18:25

I also worry that they're going to make Ossie a figure of fun. He's a monster and Biggins portrayed that very well.

ShelaghTurner · 18/06/2017 19:54

Yes to all of that. There was no build up with Dwight and Caroline. Where was the agony of short, snatched meetings and letters two months old?

And yes of course, they're so going to sex up Drake and Morwenna, which will make a mockery of their continuing story.

Whatever you may think of Biggins now, although I still love him, he was a fabulous Ossie.

MyOtherProfile · 18/06/2017 21:18

Think I just missed something. When cousin thingy just said "He's the image of his father. And Valentine, who does he favour?" what did she mean? The baby was Valentine wasn't it?

ludog · 18/06/2017 21:30

No, the baby was Verity's son, Andrew

MyOtherProfile · 18/06/2017 22:08

Ah yes thanks. I'd forgotten she'd had a baby.

ShelaghTurner · 18/06/2017 22:29

What was the point of having Andrew go missing? Isn't one person enough? Totally pointless.

But Rev. Halse! And he was being nice. It still tickles me him being in it.

ElspethFlashman · 18/06/2017 22:47

"I am a country squire" WITH ONLY ONE SERVANT! Hmm

This episode pissed me off. It was soooo sloooowwww. The bit in the cave went in forever. Morwenna looks like a nervous rabbit and has the personality of one. Drake must have literally never seen a girl in his life to be so entranced.

Ross refusing to judge his fellow man? He's the judgiest person alive! He's Dr Judgey of Judgetown!

ShelaghTurner · 18/06/2017 23:05

And Prudie sitting down to eat with them? FFS no! Wouldn't happen! Not even enlightened Ross and Demelza would have that

ElspethFlashman · 18/06/2017 23:09

And apparently they can't afford more than one set of filthy rags for her whilst Demelza rocks up in silk and pearls in her hair for some random daytime party.

ProseccoBitch · 19/06/2017 00:12

Why was Ray Penvenen buried on the top of a remote cliff?!

haveacupoftea · 19/06/2017 02:09

Ross needs a haircut. But I definitely still would. Elizabeth is still a complete dick, they'd have been a great couple really wouldn't they. I always thought Demelza and Francis would have been a good couple too.

Dulra · 19/06/2017 08:40

OK it is deviating massively from the books but I think it is beautifully set, has beautiful people in it and is perfect viewing for a Sunday summers evening viewing. The escapism it provides is just what I need right now and I'm loving it for it.

ElspethFlashman · 19/06/2017 09:08

The incomprehensible bloke with the comedy squint and the worst fake hook in history seriously better be a crucial character otherwise theres no excuse for him. Was he doing panto??!

BadTasteFlump · 19/06/2017 09:46

Ha ha Elspeth I thought the same thing. What was going on with his accent? Is that supposed to be Cornish Pirate? Confused

He's reasonably crucial but in this production anything goes! Grin

beguilingeyes · 19/06/2017 10:28

There's a war on, ships are being sunk all over the place, so of course Verity is taking her baby to Lisbon. Not dangerous at all. Perhaps she's going via Easy jet.

ElspethFlashman · 19/06/2017 11:03

Well why not? Rawwws is taking the next Ryanair over to France for the weekend!
