A reason for change? How about this iconic role has been entirely defined as male for decades and there is absolutely no justification for that beyond patriarchal custom and practice.

RustyBear · 16/07/2017 19:00

My only reservation is that if the die hards turn off and the ratings drop, they'll use as an excuse to cancel it again...

Funnyfarmer · 16/07/2017 19:03

That worries me too @rustybear

I don't understand why you feel it's a problem for a character to be played by a male for over 50 years @NorthernLurker?
It's only in the last few years that it became apparent that changing the sex of a timelord is possible.
It was mentioned in the classic serise that it wasn't possible. Dr who has given us many strong female characters over the years. So have many other shows. I feel like this obsession with having strong woman leads will see a decline of strong male character as role models for children

Hmm ah yes the poor lads, starved of role models by the paucity of men in fiction, film and history.........Hmm

girls have had to make do without a time travelling alien as a role model for the last fifty years so I guess the boys can cope now.

paxillin · 16/07/2017 19:15

Justice of the Supreme Court, Prime Minister, CEO, footballer, doctor, university professor, university student and many more used to be male roles. I'm sure her breasts won't be in her way when she's an alien.

RebootYourEngine · 16/07/2017 19:17

Im unsure about this. I like her as an actress but not sure i wamted the doctor to be female. Probably because i just want the doctor to be david tennant again. I didnt know matt smith and only knew of peter capaldi but they both grew on me over time so i will wait and see.

Why are they announcing it so early? Is it because filmimg will start soon or because they want us to talk about it for 5 months.

RustyBear · 16/07/2017 19:26

Filming for series 10 started at the end of June last year, so I would guess they need to get started soon. Once they're on the streets of Cardiff, it wouldn't be a secret for long...

Funnyfarmer · 16/07/2017 19:34

The whole point of the doctor as a role model is that he fought for what was right without using violence. Something we don't often see on tv.
It's actually been announced fairly late compared to the time scale of when others have been announced.

Hoping we don't get a male companion now as we're back to the 'will they won't they' thing.

Funnyfarmer · 16/07/2017 21:57

I would have always liked to have seen an older male doctor and a young male companion. Like capaldi and Rigsy.
Have the doctor showing a young streetwise lad a different way of doing things

Did really like Capaldi sad to see him go. She was good in attack the block and hopefully the writing is a lot better then it has been. No reason why won't work just seems at the moment it's been done more for shock value then anything. Definitely got people talking and all

Mulledwine1 · 16/07/2017 22:20

I don't know Jodie Whittaker at all (didn't watch Broadchurch) so am prepared to have an open mind. Haven't really liked Dr Who since David Tennant went, although this series was probably the best since that era (though it's not saying much). I just hope that we don't have tacky jokes about "ooh I've got boobs" or something similar. Not needed at all. We don't need reminding she's a woman every 5 minutes but I bet you it will happen.

littlejeopardy · 16/07/2017 22:25

Confession, I've not read the whole thread and I am happy with a female doctor but I have (superficial) questions.

She has blonde hair with dark roots so...

Did she regenerate with brown hair and go 'screw it, I'm a woman now, I can change this.'?
Or does she regenerate with pre-dyed hair? Did any of the male doctors regenerate with styled hair?
She is wearing mascara, was that a learning curve for the Doctor? Will it ever smudge or will it be the same unmovable stuff that Rose used? Only smudged on Doomsday?

The only thing that will really annoy me is if she regenerates into a perfectly made up and styled woman straight away. I don't mind the Doctor caring about her appearance, she has always been particular about how she looks. But if she regenerates with that polished look I will be doing serious eye rolling.

coldcanary · 16/07/2017 23:14

I think they'll go for a male companion, probably an actor older than her. Maybe they'll go alien? They haven't had an alien companion since Turlough I think. I hope so anyway.

RustyBear · 16/07/2017 23:30

They haven't had an alien companion since Turlough You mean, apart from Nardole? And Rory after the Auton-conversion? And even, conceivably River, who had part-Time Lord DNA?

coldcanary · 16/07/2017 23:35

I meant a full time companion! Grin
Rory was only an Auton until the Doctor rebooted the universe, River only ever popped in and out and god only knows what Nardole was, they never explained that one!

WhirlwindHugs · 16/07/2017 23:44

I heard Pearl/Bill has been in talking with the crew, plus she's been popular with fans so I'd be really surprised if she's not back.

I think that'll work.

RebootYourEngine · 17/07/2017 08:12

They should keep nardole. He brings a bit of humour to the show.

Funnyfarmer · 17/07/2017 09:26

I think they should keep bill and nardole too.
I just hope bill doesn't end up with some school girl crush.

I know the daily mails not mns fave paper, but Christopher Stevens page about it is SPOT ON!

Totally agree 100%.

paxillin · 17/07/2017 13:45

Oh, the Daily Wail agrees, that changes everything Grin Grin Grin

WhirlwindHugs · 17/07/2017 17:13

I disagree 100% with the mail (what a shock) what a whinger, the idea that all the male heroes have disappeared is an almost impressive bit of selective memory! Absolutely tonnes of male heroes still out there, on kids tv and for adults.

polyhymnia · 17/07/2017 19:33

Must agree the DM article was a load of predictable rubbish. (Only saw it because I picked up the DM in the pub and flicked through looking, as usual, for articles I knew would irritate me and reinforce my loathing for the 'paper'!).

Funnyfarmer · 17/07/2017 21:25

Do you have a link? @QuiQuaiQuod
