I'm going to be away with my in-laws for the weekend, and I'm not sure if they'll want to spend their Saturday evening watching Doctor Who, so I've set it to record at home to watch when I get back.

On the plus side, there's no phone signal there (let alone wi-fi) so there's minimal risk of being exposed to spoilers.

Willow2017 · 14/04/2017 11:17

Definately excited for tomorrow.

I hope it lives up to its promise. Loved it for donkeys years.

I liked Clara too, dont get the hate for her. To be a companion you need to be a bit resilient and confident, no point in being a wall flower if you are going to be in life threatening situations on a regular basis Smile

Polidori · 14/04/2017 11:44

I think Clara became a far more interesting character after the regeneration. With Matt Smith it's like the writers didnt really know what to do with her, or the characters just didn't work. But after Capaldi came on the scene she seemed to come into her own and became one of the strongest companion characters there's been.

bialystockandbloom · 14/04/2017 13:13

Nope Clara got worse and worse (imho obv Grin). I loved her earliest incarnation as Oswin and the Victorian nanny, but she just took over more and more, and much of the last couple of series felt like the Doctor himself was just the sideshow. Agree a strong companion is essential (adored both Rose and Donna especially) but Clara was like a bossy petulant child. Flouncing off, coming back, flouncing again... Did think the final scene in the Diner was very good though, very poignant.

And thank the lordy that PC has finally been given his sonic screwdriver back. Only took a series for him to get it, and a revamp of the Tardis Hmm

coldcanary · 14/04/2017 14:46

I looking forward to it, Bill looks interesting and I want to know why he's brought Nardole back.
I've liked more of Peter Capaldi's episodes than I disliked overall, but I'm a bit of a fan of his Smile. For me Clara stayed far too long, she should have gone after his first season, it became too much about her than him, although at least he didn't have a companion mooning over him like a schoolgirl with a crush like Rose!
According to Twitter he's already filmed his regeneration sequence so they must have filmed the new Doctor as well. I Wonder when they'll announce it?

Funnyfarmer · 14/04/2017 18:03

Clara had very little personality on her 1st serise. She was only there to feature in moffets oh so clever timey wimey story arc. After that it seemed like her personality was told to us through dialog rather than shown to us from her performance.
It did seem like like Moffat was in some kind of competition with RTD over who can create the best "most perfect companion"
And both failed miserably in my eyes.
Not that u really disliked rose or Clara. I just think they tried to hard to shove them down our throats and force us to like them that they both became quite irritating

Clara was so smug and annoying. The only one of the recent companions I've liked was Donna. She was willing to challenge the Doctor and had admit when she was wrong.

coldcanary · 14/04/2017 19:34

Donna is probably my favourite companion of the modern DW. Amy, Rory and Martha all grew on me (especially Rory) but started off quite weak. Donna just blazed right in there from the start! It's a shame she couldn't come back, imagine what she'd have been like with Pc's Doctor Grin

raisedbyguineapigs · 14/04/2017 19:34

I thought Miffatt admitted he lost his mojo around series 7 (!) but they couldn't find anyone to replace him. I don't know why, if that was the case, why he didn't draft in loads of new writers, and just give them a theme to work with. Never mind a female Doctor, what about some decent female writers, who can write strong female parts (rather than mad/stroppy/psychopathic, although I love River and shes all 3Grin )I'm looking forward to series 10 but I'm also looking forward to finding out the new Doctor. I sadly didnt warm to Capaldi, even though I love him in everything else.

OI SPACEMAN!!

Funnyfarmer · 14/04/2017 21:08

A bit of talk of the new doctor.
Who you you like to see?
I think kriss Marshall would be good. I know he's a bit matt Smith. But thought he would good even before matt was cast.
I also think Phil glennister from life on mars would be good.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it - Hilly and Hannah Hindi (the sisters behind Hillywood) are amazing and I've got a very soft spot for all their parodies as they speak to my inner geek.

PerspicaciaTick · 14/04/2017 21:16

I'm sticking with my (impossible) dream casting of Tilda Swinton.

Funnyfarmer · 14/04/2017 21:37

So your in favour of a female doctor@PerspicaciaTick?
Not impossible though

AGnu · 14/04/2017 22:10

I'm not sure how I'd feel about a female Doctor. I think it would be a bit like my brother announcing he wanted to be my sister. I'd get used to it eventually but it would be a bit bizarre to start with!

Not sure who I'd like to see as the next Doctor. I've been a Marc Elliott fan since his Enders days & he was fab in Holby but I'm not sure he'd fit as The Doctor. They could have him as an assistant or other recurring character though... Aidan Turner would be great, but I'm guessing they won't have him as the main character for 2 big BBC series at the same time! Basically, I base my choices on who I like to look at the most... WinkBlush

Funnyfarmer · 14/04/2017 22:23

Don't see any reason why marc Elliot wouldn't work. Bet people thought Chris eccleston wasn't very doctory.
Not sure how how to post videos but will try in a minute. It was a comic relief 1994 doctor who parody. It was funny and Rowan Atkinson played the doctor and he was fab! It was wrote by Moffat too. Give me 5 minutes I'll try and find it and post it

I would like to see a female Dr, if they managed to get the casting spot on. Tilda would be perfect. Joanna Scanlon would be brilliant, but I suspect she might be a bit too womanly for widespread appeal.
I love the Rowan Atkinson spoof. Every once in a while he appears surprisingly attractive...which is always confusing.

TheDrsDocMartens · 15/04/2017 05:42

Just placemarking for later. Think Bill looks interesting. I didn't like Clara, the series focused too much on her.

Snapespeare · 15/04/2017 06:18

Very glad that there will be no Clara, full of expectation for bill but miffed to see matt lucas is still around, he's an awful actor with no depth and this is a major turn-off for me. Capaldi has amazing potential, nut scripts have been awful and I loathed Clara.

Still, I'll give it a whirl, as it's my thing

Snapespeare · 15/04/2017 06:27

Oh, I don't think they necessarily have to have cast new doctor because capaldi has filmed his regeneration. I used to be very opposed to a female doctor (am stubborn feminist!) because didn't trust the writing to not be about ovaries, tits and handbags (Moffat writes gender stereotypical women, badly) but broadchurch gives me a bit more hope and I would LOVE to see Natalie Tena as the D - my two fandoms would intercross!

Funnyfarmer · 15/04/2017 09:36

I'm unsure about a female dr. Although I would have had the said absolutely no way to a female master and I'm one of the few who like missy as a character. I just don't like the whole gender swap thing. I'm one if those weird fans who believe it could actually be all real, and it just doesn't fit my logic.
I very much doubt chibnall will run with a female dr, at least at 1st. It's too much of a risk for a new show runner.
Last night on Graham Norton PC said He's filmed his death but not the Christmas special and he's the doctor in that. So somehow he dies at the end of this season but still returns as the doctor in the Christmas special 🤔

If they did cast a female Doctor it would have to be Olivia Coleman for me. I've never seen her in a bad role and she does odd very well.
all the men I would want are probably a bit on the older side, I think they'll go younger this time - maybe someone in their 30's. otherwise it would either be David Harewood (who I think has already turned it down once) or Tom Hollander.

PerspicaciaTick · 15/04/2017 09:46

Natalie Tena - now there's a thought.
