Starts on Monday 2nd Jan @ 11am (new time) each day.

DH always says, "You can tell it is the new year when this deluded escapism is on!"

I for one will have it on series record. Anyone else joining me to escape to Oz each morning?

Their current income isn't that high for professionals, nor are the Australian opportunities secure.

ZouBisou · 31/01/2017 11:27

Well he just said he earns 30-35k, so I guess the housing budget must come from an inheritance or something else.

Oldraver · 31/01/2017 11:37

Yet again they have a house in the UK worth 500k and I assume not all that is equity and are going for something much much more expensive.

Is this pushed by the tv people, I dont get it

barkinginessex · 31/01/2017 11:40

Poor Mary Sad and her dad. What a horrible decision to have to make.

LIZS · 31/01/2017 11:42

Very sensible. There isn't really any urgency to move.

WinterWander · 31/01/2017 12:15

I thought her dad had built their house which might explain how they can afford an expensive home.
I thought as an academic she'd want to keep her permanent post not go on uncertain contracts. His is a job he could possibly do anywhere but hers you need to be where the jobs are. I hope it works out for them - they seemed like a nice couple.

MadisonAvenue · 31/01/2017 14:43

Really liked these two, hope it all works out for them. I was really surprised by her decision.

Here's the Facebook update if you've not seen it;

We were in touch with Keith and Mary recently and they told us they are still living in the UK.
After returning from their trial week, Mary got some bad news - her dad was hospitalised for a few months due to a bad fall. It threw plans into disarray for a while but now with him recovering well the move looks to be back on.
And already there’s good news. They have both been granted a Permanent Residents Visa. Now the idea is Keith will move to Australia first while Mary stays and cares for her Dad.
Eventually they both hope to move permanently, but in the meantime they are adapting to their new circumstances. We wish the family all the best and hope things work out.

HotWellies · 31/01/2017 15:30

Does this show ever talk about incidental costs such as visas and moving? I watched it today and wondered. My BF is Australian, her DH English and they are starting the process of moving back home. She told me that getting him a Partner visa alone is nearly £5,000 and they have two little kids also. So if there are two adults in a family going plus children- that's possibly £15 k before they even start.

But I loved the location they showed them today. Stunning!!!! (And serious house-envy).

LIZS · 31/01/2017 15:43

The properties are always in the back end of nowhere , making a mockery of any desire to shorten commute , working day and achieve a better work-life balance.

flappynewyear · 31/01/2017 16:37

A friend of mine went and visas for the 2 (elderly) dogs cost £5k alone!

RebootYourEngine · 31/01/2017 19:15

HotWellies the cost of moving isnt mentioned in the show. It should be though because people might be able to afford to live in australia but can they afford to get there first.

HotWellies · 31/01/2017 20:01

Thanks Reboot.

I have only watched a couple of episodes, but am a bit baffled about the 'more time for family' thing. People in Australia have to work too- and generally 9-5 plus commuting like everyone else. Moving is not a magic pill surely that adds hours to the day. If you want to spend more time with the family, then you make it a priority wherever you are?

LIZS · 01/02/2017 11:12

Anyone watching today? They are visiting Adelaide but wasn't his sister in Sydney?

quarkinstockcubes · 01/02/2017 11:20

I know that is strange, he wanted to be near his sister.

LIZS · 01/02/2017 11:38

They aren't really comparing like for like. The shopping list must be pretty edited as our supermarket shop is rarely as cheap as shown.

loveinasuitcase · 01/02/2017 11:38

Those blue wide leg trousers Tanya were wearing at the job part were hideous and very unflattering on her.

Heatherbell1978 · 01/02/2017 11:42

Childcare costs in Oz won't be that much as they get the child care rebate for 50% of the costs. Wish the researchers would do their job properly sometimes...

quarkinstockcubes · 01/02/2017 11:55

Did you hear the way Rehan said during the family videos "see you in a few months"? I assume that means that they stayed on.

They are looking for new recruits for the show so if anyone fancies visiting Aus Grin

ZouBisou · 02/02/2017 11:03

I was out yesterday, but watching today...

Oldraver · 02/02/2017 11:07

I have a friend who has been in Oz I think for nearly two years and has just spunked three grand on getting through his Visa

LIZS · 02/02/2017 11:09

Yesterday's family haven't gone yet, saving up first.

ZouBisou · 02/02/2017 11:11

She looks like Lindsay Lohan

Vagndidit · 02/02/2017 11:13

Hell, I'd have no hope of getting on the show, even if it seems like the only criteria these days is "looking for a free holiday."

We're already living abroad, and instead of the tearful pleading on the family/friends video we'd be more likely to be subject to comments like "Again? Send us your new address when you arrive!" Or "Haven't you lived there already?" I'd have to recruit fellow Mumsnetters to provide friend commentary...

wideboy26 · 02/02/2017 11:15

Oh dear. Tears already and it's only the introduction.

wideboy26 · 02/02/2017 11:18

The number of people who comment on the "sinks" in the nice en suite bathroom. They're washbasins - or basins for short. Clutches pearls
