Anyone else watching this madness?!

OP posts:
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 16/11/2016 17:16

Unless they edited his good bits out? They seemed to be getting on pretty well on honeymoon. I can't believe he got through the process.

OohhThatsMe · 16/11/2016 20:05

I just don't understand how the people running this don't choose people who want to live in the same area. Why should anyone leave the city they're living in to live with a stranger, when they love where they live? It seems a lot more basic than almost anything else.

OohhThatsMe · 16/11/2016 20:05

And if they move, they're vulnerable, as they won't be near to friends and family.

squoosh · 16/11/2016 20:06

There's be no conflict if they chose people who wanted all the same things. And a show without conflict makes for pretty dull viewing. The producers want high viewing figures more than they want these marriages to survive! Grin

OohhThatsMe · 16/11/2016 20:18

Yes, but surely the whole point is that they're proving you can make this selection based on scientific grounds. I know, it's stupid! But something like where someone wants to live should be one of the absolutely basic things. It says so much about you and just seems crazy that they'd ignore it.

alphabook · 16/11/2016 20:20

I feel sorry for Lucie, and Sara too to an extent. Adam clearly didn't really want to give up his single life, and maybe he didn't realise that until it was too late. But I don't have a clue what Steve was even doing on the programme. I can't see him having had a successful match with anyone, he just wasn't emotionally open or confident enough to really embrace the experience. I don't buy for a second that the people doing the matching thought he would really have a successful match, Lucie was set up to fail from the start.

squoosh · 16/11/2016 20:22

I'd imagine there's an argument between the producers and the matchmakers over who gets picked. There's no way the pretend-y scientists get final approval on who's selected.

MrsJamin · 16/11/2016 20:25

I wonder if a lot more women applied than men, so that meant that some of the men (Steve and student adam) got through that perhaps weren't :ahem: ideal marriage material, let's say?

ZoFloMoFo · 16/11/2016 20:29

I think at the very start of the first programme they said this year there were 7000 applicants and only 1000 of those were men.

MrsJamin · 16/11/2016 20:46

There you go then! Slim pickings!

Moanranger · 16/11/2016 20:46

Zo there were, I think, 3000 applicants, 700 men & 2300 women, which tells you a lot!

alphabook · 16/11/2016 20:47

I can't believe that out of 1000 male applicants they couldn't find anyone better than Steve though!

OohhThatsMe · 16/11/2016 20:54

I thought he was alright. He just didn't like his wife much!

MrsJamin · 16/11/2016 20:55

3,500 people. 767 men. I just rewatched episode 1!

Arcadia · 16/11/2016 21:15

I think Steve had that 'I just don't fancy her but need to try and make it more complicated as I can't say that' issue, made worse by it being filmed!

MrsJamin · 16/11/2016 21:26

I'm such a MAFS nerd, and ran out of things to watch, and started rewatching the first series, and who pops up but....!

Married at first sight!?
OohhThatsMe · 16/11/2016 21:43

What? He was in series one, too?

Rrross1ges · 16/11/2016 21:56

Oh my life!

MrsJamin · 16/11/2016 22:02

It was just a shot of him when they were doing the application montages, but yes he obviously applied in 2015 and was either approached by the production team again or applied again. Odd!

squoosh · 16/11/2016 22:11

There's something very sad about someone applying for this (bonkers) programme two years in a row, Get yourself on Tinder Steve!

MrsJamin · 16/11/2016 22:13

Yeah isn't it? I feel sorry for him, I hope he can learn to open up, and to quit smoking!

OohhThatsMe · 16/11/2016 22:22

His smoking alone might be the reason why he's single - if he smells of stale smoke that in itself would put off a lot of young women who don't smoke.

msrisotto · 17/11/2016 06:59

Steve came off as having crippling insecurity. From the start when he got his teeth fixed and the poor love's attempts at giving up smoking. I've never seen the embodiment of "you can't love someone else until you love yourself" before, but he is it.

MrsJamin · 17/11/2016 07:07

I wonder whether he has PTSD from the army, he didn't want to talk about it and it would have been a massive part of his life for years.

Mottled · 17/11/2016 07:38

This scientific approach isn't working, from what I can gather it is based on choosing the people with the most similar DNA. Maybe the theory that opposites attract might be better. I also agree that the vicar is creepy but any credible vicar probably wouldn't have agreed to a reality that show.
