Sophie Skelton was cast really, really late wasn't she? Well into the second half of filming for S2 if I remember correctly. It might be that the episode was rushed and she didn't have time to properly sink into the role. I'm hoping she improves but when you're playing someone so unlikable it's going to be tough, bless her.

Lessstressedhemum · 19/07/2016 09:33

I have always kind of wondered why Fergus is still so stronly French. He even still has a French accent. Surely after 30 years of living with Scots he would be more Scottish, after all he was only 10 when he left France.

AKAmyself · 19/07/2016 09:37

And I can't figure out why Jamie treats him so indifferently. I hope they fix that in the show - after all they already made child fergus a much better character

TheHiphopopotamus · 19/07/2016 09:48

Agree about everything you've all said about Fergus. He's another of DG's horrible, lazy stereotypes. And totally agree about the accent! He's spent most of his life in Scotalnd or amongst Scots, the chances are he would now have a strong Scottish accent.

Aka I disagree about DG liking Roger. He's always shown being compared to Jamie in some way and failing miserably. But I love him in spite of all that (although he's a more fleshed out, real character than many in her books).

AKAmyself · 19/07/2016 10:02

Interesting, Hip. I do love roger in the books and think he's an interesting counterweight to Jamie's idea of masculinity - a more modern version, maybe? I do think Jamie feels a bit threatened by it, just as roger feels threatened by Jamie's all-round awesomeness

Drywhitethanks · 19/07/2016 10:47

Oh that's a shame about adult Fergus haven't got to that bit yet he was so lovely asa child.

Haven't really got to any dodge French yet native speaker this will bug me. Re accent. My mother has lived in England for 50yrs, never lost her accent. I think a child might have a mixture though.

Hiphop I adore Brienne in GoT, brilliant character.

Can I get this straight......Sir John is the older brother of William , the 16yr old who Attacked Jamie while he was having a pee? both sons of Sir Melton or something?

Lessstressedhemum · 19/07/2016 10:52

Sir John is William. John William Bertram Armstrong Grey, younger brother of Lord Melton and son of the Duke of Pardloe.

Lessstressedhemum · 19/07/2016 10:56

Pressed post too soonBlush DG's French is completely school girl, but then her Gaelic was awful too until she got a native speaker to sort it out. Perhaps she should consider doing that with the French as well. Dry, I can understand an adult keeping her accent (how fab btw to have a French mother, I would love to be bilingual), but surely a child would pick up the accent of those around him. Mine picked up the accents of their speech therapists, for goodness sake, I can only imagine what would have happened if they'd been living with a south African or an Irish person!

TheHiphopopotamus · 19/07/2016 10:58

I think in regards to Roger, he just can't do anything right. The last bit of TFC I read, Brianna took Roger out to shoot something or other and he couldn't even do that, because there's something up with his eyes. Brianna, of course, was an ace shot Hmm so basically, even she's better at being a bloke than Roger is.

And then they had sex. And he was crap at that too (unlike Jamie, who only has to look at woman and they have an orgasm). I find it infuriating tbh and it just makes me like him even more. If I was him, I'd leave Brianna in the 18th Century.

AKAmyself · 19/07/2016 11:17

But Roger is brilliant at oral sex, is he not? (I have a genuine doubt on whether I'm basing this on any actual book events or its my own fantasy Blush).

AKAmyself · 19/07/2016 11:21

And Jamie is always looking for Roger Macs advice on stuff after he's almost had him killed and people always want him to talk at funerals etc???

I get defensive of wee Roger, I do

AKAmyself · 19/07/2016 11:37

But Yes - Brianna is insufferable and a bit of a harpy. i can't muster any sympathy for her misadventures, either, and I find myself frowning at her parenting methods.

TheHiphopopotamus · 19/07/2016 12:24

But Roger is brilliant at oral sex, is he not

Is he?!! I don't think I've got to that bit yet Grin

I think I'm going to have to go and re read everything except The Gathering, make copious notes, then come back to discuss it (by which time, you'll all have moved on and I'll be talking to myself no change there, then Grin).

AKAmyself · 19/07/2016 12:35

Hip, I might have made that up completely based on my, ahem, mental image of Roger.

TheHiphopopotamus · 19/07/2016 12:37

Grin Well, if he isn't, he should be.

Mmm, Rik Rankin....😋

Lessstressedhemum · 19/07/2016 13:32

I don't remember wee Roger being brilliant at oral sex. I seem to remember Brianna only orgasming when sex is rough. Jamie on the other hand has no rival in terms of sex, oral or otherwise. One run of his hand through his glorious red hair and woman collapse because their legs can no longer hold them up.
Roger doesn't measure up to Jamie in any way, even his ministeriness is only because he's a Presbyterian and Jamie is catholic. The protestant folk on the ridge can't countenance having their funerals done by a Romish heathen! Poor wee Roger, Brianna is definitely a better man than he is, it must suck to be him.

Drywhitethanks · 19/07/2016 13:47

Hiphop don't worry, I'm only half way through Voyager, I'll be here a while.
Yes, I think children loose their accents easier than adults...although I also know French who speak English without accents . So I guess it depends on the person.

Oooooh Roget!!!

TheHiphopopotamus · 19/07/2016 13:54
Grin

Yep, DG despises Roger, I think, which only makes me like him more and Brianna less. God, she's an awful character and it amazes me that DG wrote a character as wonderful as Jamie and one as monstrous as Brianna, who has not one likeable quality, but who we're supposed to love.

I don't speak for everyone, of course, so does anyone on here actually like book Brianna?

AKAmyself · 19/07/2016 14:01

Nah, I hate Brianna.

TheHiphopopotamus · 19/07/2016 14:19

I don't like Aunt Jocasta either. Wonder if it's just female characters I have a problem with.

Lessstressedhemum · 19/07/2016 14:22

No, Brianna gets right up my nose! I blame Frank and his constant spoiling of her. His bad attitude to Clare transferred a bit her as well. Jamie would have, perhaps, done a better job of it, at least he has respect for her mother, who also rips my knitting, except when she is interacting with jamie.

AKAmyself · 19/07/2016 14:22

Jocasta is vile too. Claire is only ok because she's the vessel of our Jamie fantasies.

Lessstressedhemum · 19/07/2016 14:24

That's maybe it, AKA, we all want to be in Claire's place, so we put up with her and live vicariouslyGrin

AKAmyself · 19/07/2016 14:33

.... Even when she ligates haemorrhoids (my own personal low)...

Drywhitethanks · 19/07/2016 17:04

Just re watching final episode on big screen this time before anyone gets home........does anyone know if the ruin of Lallybroch actually exists? Doesn't look like a set to me............so sad when she sees J in the archway.
