Looking online it says that Lallybroch is Midhope Castle near Edinburgh. Looks like it's still intact though, the ruin must have been CGI.

hudyerwheesht · 19/07/2016 19:59

Actually I think it is in quite a bad shape, if I remember rightly when I looked up the locations online it said you could drive up to it but it isn't safe to walk around.
I welled up at the bit when she sees Jamie in the archway.

hudyerwheesht · 19/07/2016 19:59

One run of his hand through his glorious red hair and woman collapse because their legs can no longer hold them up.
Grin

JacquettaWoodville · 19/07/2016 20:01

Awesome name hud

TheHiphopopotamus · 19/07/2016 20:05

You're right hud although it looks like it still has its roof. I'm probably misremembering, but it looked much more of a wreck on the last ep.

I welled up at Jamie in the gateway too, but then I hate seeing old houses and castles in ruins (not usually to the point of tears though Grin).

Drywhitethanks · 19/07/2016 22:20

That was the most moving bit for me...........although J at the end by the standing stones do they exist was incredible. His eyes, bloody heck SH is one passionate actor.

TheHiphopopotamus · 19/07/2016 22:31

I admit I also teared up at the 'Rest easy, soldier' bit.

I kind of wish I hadn't read the books in a way, although the commissioning of another two series may have given the game away somewhat.

wigglybeezer · 20/07/2016 13:52

I don't mind Brianna (or Claire for that matter); I suspect because I could be viewed as a woman who can be difficult to live with at times. I seem to need a lot of attention or I start to feel a bit sad, and I have a tendency to like to be in charge and am a bit inclined to rebel against expectations. I love DH, but in a more complicated way than the simple devotion he seems to feel for me ( wonders if other people feel sorry for DH like you lot feel sorry for Roger).
I accept their flaws as I accept the flaws of friends and family ( having spent eight books worth of time with them !).

Drywhitethanks · 20/07/2016 20:48

Oh my good god !!! Or should I say Jesus H Rosaveelt Christ!
I'm shocked at what I've just read! You kept that quiet! Sigh sire and her daughter have just burst in on C and J....it's getting juicy Shock

Drywhitethanks · 20/07/2016 20:49

That should be "Laoghaire"

snozzlemaid · 21/07/2016 05:31

That is definitely a real shocker. I didnt know about that until I read it either.
It's a real Shock moment. I didn't like it at first but have sort of come to terms with it now.

Drywhitethanks · 21/07/2016 08:18

I think the subsequent fight between C and J will be incredible by those two powerful actors.....I'm actually really enjoying Voyager. just wish C would count to ten a bit more...

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/07/2016 11:05

I hated the Laoghaire bit in Voyager. I couldn't, for the life of me, work out why Jamie would've married her. As far as I'm can recall in the books, apart from the snog in Outlander, Laoghaire isn't even on Jamie's radar. Plus the fact that, y'know, she tried to have Claire burned at the stake as a witch Hmm

I think the show is already doing a better job of showing the interactions between J & L. She's a more rounded character, especially with the extra bits that they've added (which DG didn't like, apparently, saying they'd 'jumped the shark). An unpopular opinion, but Laoghaire is actually growing on me in the show. I suppose I need to know that Jamie isn't such a terrible judge of character after all (although a lot of Laoghaire's faults are down to DG lazy writing again).

Lessstressedhemum · 21/07/2016 12:52

In the books J doesn't know that Laoghaire tried to have Claire bumped off. He married her because of pressure Fromm jenny and because he thought Laoghaire needed him to look after her, what with being a widow and a single mum. He also needed something to give him an anchor. When he came back from england, he was depressed, rootless and drifting, so he didn't really know how to say no to jenny's nagging.

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/07/2016 13:05

In the books J doesn't know that Laoghaire tried to have Claire bumped off

And that is probably the thing I found most ridiculous (not you less, more of DG's stupid plotting). Are they so busy shagging that they don't talk about stuff? If I were Claire, I would have been cursing Laoghaire to high heaven, all the way from Leoch to the Stones.

I'm glad they've changed that particular thing in the show. It didn't make any sense to me at all.

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/07/2016 13:11

My point kind of being that they've addressed it in the show, Laoghaire has apologised (not very sincerely, mind Grin) but she's tried to make amends and they've tried to flesh her character out. I actually warmed to her a bit in that episode with Young Simon.

So that when that moment comes, it won't be so much 'WTAF?!' as it was in the book.

Drywhitethanks · 21/07/2016 13:48

Hmm interesting.
Hip I felt a bit the same about marrying L boo hiss but understood why J did. It is odd that he didn't know she'd orchastrated the witch thing.

Just listened to RM's podcast about S1 The wedding and The Reckoning. Really insightful. So much attention to detail. Didn't know the Lallybroch key ring wasn't in the book, so lovely in the show. Think they seem to improve the books actually.

AKAmyself · 21/07/2016 14:23

I love The ring made out of the key to lallybroch which Jamie had been carrying around in his tiny sporran for years just in case he happened to drop by and no one was home.

In the books, j getting c a ring coincides with a particular low in Claire's characterisation where she embodies the jealous, immature, Whiney image of a ball breaker. It's what eventually leads to Jamie almost raping her in what is supposed to be a really hot scene which I hated (and which they turned into the mother of all hot sex scenes in the show, when they shag by the fire and Claire holds a knife to his throat).

AKAmyself · 21/07/2016 14:27

I never really had an issue with Jamie marrying laoghaire in the books - for all the reasons lessstressed mentioned. I have a huge issue with the way Dg assassinated the Jenny character by making her the one who meddles and bullies Jamie into something that is so not obviously in his interest. she doesn't redeem herself, either, and remains a bitch theoughout the rest of the series. The show has given us such a wonderful Jennie that I really hope they don't screw her up!

Lessstressedhemum · 21/07/2016 14:53

Agree about jenny. She never really redeems herself. She takes months and months to speak to Jamie again when Ian joins the Mohawk, and even when she forgives him it's grudging and double edged. She is awful when Ian Mor is dying, although that's maybe a bit understandable. But Jamie continues to be devoted to her. I think, maybe, she starts to improve a bit towards the end of book 8 but she cannae half carry a grudge.

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/07/2016 15:19

I love The ring made out of the key to lallybroch

I liked that too, although I would've imagined the key to Lallybroch to be a great big iron thing, the size of Jamie's head, rather than the piddly little thing it was. Some of the online Outlander fans were fewmin' that it wasn't the same as in the book though.

Speaking of rings though, what's the reason behind Claire wearing Jamie's ring on her right hand? (I understand the fact that she was still married to Frank bit). For all intents and purposes, in the 18th C, she was a widow (at least they though she was) so shouldn't she have put F's ring on the right hand and Jamie's on the left? It's always kind of annoyed me that Frank gets the proper hand (I realise this makes me sound a little bit bonkers Grin).

Drywhitethanks · 21/07/2016 17:09

They're about to go to Jamaica to find young Ian......Hmm.....not sure how long I'm going to last with the books. Really want to see B and R arrive though. I'm thinking I prefer the series.
Agree that Jenny is already turning a bit nasty, which is ashame as C and her seem so close in the show.

Need Poldark to start to fill the void........and Vikings second bit of S5

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/07/2016 17:56

I found my interest wained when they left Scotland Dry although I enjoyed the next book, The Drums of Autumn, more than any of the others apart from the first. DoA is when Roger comes into his own.

I can't wait for Poldark either Grin

snozzlemaid · 21/07/2016 17:58

Just looked into the ring thing Hiphop. Apparently in 17th and 18th century they wore wedding rings on any finger. So I guess she just left Frank's where it was.

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/07/2016 18:00

Ooh, that's interesting snozzle thanks.

I wondered if there was a historical reason behind it and it seems there is I would still have put Jamie's on the left hand Grin
