Anyone see Shetland tonight? New drama series on BBC1?

I liked it! Nice to see the scenery, plus Scottish accents on a BEeb programme.

Oh god, how good was that?

Loved the dynamic between Freya and Jimmy when discussing Michael's idiosyncrasies - so like islanders. The almost instant camaraderie/trust/support - it's a small community and bonds run deep.

SealSong · 05/02/2016 23:52

Yes I love how they get the nuances and complexities of island life so well, although saying that I think Sandy's storyline is a bit too obvious.

Gruach I thought it was the no-good boy but you raise an interesting point with the scary old man, he has to come into it somewhere. Well spotted also that it was the gun case.

NewBallsPlease00 · 06/02/2016 01:52

I wondered if it could be a Shetland cop rather than Glasgow one who was the leak?

Libra · 06/02/2016 09:13

Please can someone tell me what Michael was saying on the answer phone at the end. I couldn't make it out at all.
Sympathies Grace re the storm. We're in north Aberdeenshire and lost roofing tiles ourselves. And a catamaran that a neighbour keeps outside their house was driven out of the sea and on to our road.

NatashaBolkonskaya · 06/02/2016 12:13

I didn't get it, either Libra Only: "Freya I don't know if you can hear this..." which is all they've got on the subtitle site too.

Maybe we weren't supposed to hear any more.

Gruach · 06/02/2016 12:24

No, I don't think we were supposed to hear - though there was a fleeting expression on Freya's face that suggested she might have recognised something.

Libra · 06/02/2016 12:48

Ok. Thanks! Thought I was going deaf!

SealSong · 06/02/2016 23:02

OK I've just re-watched the last episode (I'm nothing if not dedicated to the cause). Three things I spotted:

  • Perez clearly has had some kind of previous involvement with the main villian character (the one that's been released from prison - can't remember his name)...this will become more relevant I think
  • It looks like it was one of the Glasgow cops that was the leak - Perez visits the flat of one (also can't remember name) and he has fled - looks like it was him, unless that is a red herring
  • The person at the end of the episode who was burning the gun case ad young hands, therefore it wasn't the scary old man who did the burning

Also did anyone notice the delicious very subtle interactions between Sandy and the dour old desk Sergeant in the Lerwick police station? Quite funny.

SealSong · 06/02/2016 23:03
  • had, not ad
SirVixofVixHall · 06/02/2016 23:07

Just watched it on catch up. i'm really enjoying it, and it is written by an old friend of mine, so I'm really glad it is so good.

Gruach · 06/02/2016 23:20

There seemed to be an implication that Perez' wife had died of drugs (heroin). Is that something everyone knows from earlier series (which I haven't seen) or did I imagine it?

Because the master villain could have had his lackeys steal any photo from the (in-laws' or parents', I forget) house but deliberately chose that one ...

SealSong · 06/02/2016 23:45

Not sure about Perez wife and heroin, no suggestion of that in previous series unless I missed it (entirely possible). You could be right though.

Master villian's lackeys definitely did steal the photo from PIL house and deliberately chose one of Perez wife. I assumed that was just to psych Perez out / attempt to intimidate him, but there could be more to it.

I would love to be a detective in real life (as long as I didn't have to meet too many scary characters).

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 06/02/2016 23:47

I really like the female detective. she comes across really well.

Davros · 06/02/2016 23:47

Caught up tonight. Sadly it is getting very slow, grey and turgid

GraceKellysLeftArm · 07/02/2016 08:41

From the books (books and this series by other people):

Perez's first wife- married her south, late miscarriage, split up, he returned to Shetland, she re-married (a doctor??) and had 2/3 kids. No animosity between her and Perez.

Second wife = fran - lost artist flower (so possible drug use???) whom Duncan scoops up back to Shetland. She is shot on fair isle by an angry twitcher when Perez tried to combine business with pleasure and have a holiday/solve a murder simultaneously.

The hard Glaswegian was very good with his smart suits - very Gorbals gangster.

Gruach · 07/02/2016 09:23

Ah, thank you GKLA. Shot by a twitcher?Shock

mrswhiplington · 07/02/2016 09:41

I agree with Davros, it can be a bit grim.

Love James Cosmo though.

GraceKellysLeftArm · 07/02/2016 10:15

Gruach - a twitcher is a bird-watcher.

Gruach · 07/02/2016 10:23

Didn't realise I'd implied otherwiseGrin.

Just seems an awful misfortune.

GraceKellysLeftArm · 07/02/2016 11:38

Sorry! Thought you were asking what it was! Grin Yes, someone took credit for someone else's whooper spot iirc!

Davros · 07/02/2016 11:43

I'm very sorry to say that I got bored Blush but maybe that episode was a lull, I will definitely stick with it as it's got so much going for it

SealSong · 07/02/2016 11:46

Well, twitchers take these things very seriously! Grin

Gruach · 07/02/2016 11:53

It is odd that every viewer sees a different thingGrin.

Your "dull" is my multi-layered.

Your "grey" to me is "staggering, can't take my eyes from the screen".

Your "turgid" to me is quick silvery - the tiniest shift in expression revealing a whole new story. When Leanne(?) finally opened her eyes in hospital - nothing happened but I was alive with the terror and tension of her realisation and the danger she might be in. And wondering why no family had come to tend to her. It's so good!

diddl · 07/02/2016 15:04

I'm just watching the third ep & I'm really bored!

Three more to go to solve this?

Say it isn't so!

SealSong · 07/02/2016 19:46

There is an off button, Diddl.

Gruach, yes agree with you.

It would be lovely if those who are not enjoying Shetland would leave this thread to those who are. as it's adding to our enjoyment chatting about what's going on and these 'don't like it' posts are spoiling it a bit, for me anyway.
