Anyone see Shetland tonight? New drama series on BBC1?

I liked it! Nice to see the scenery, plus Scottish accents on a BEeb programme.

I suspect the book would have been much clearer on the gaping hole of how Leanne knew to email the crooked lawyer.

Too much unfinished business. The drugs story for a start.

Sigh. Brilliant series but the last episode was a let down for me.

Unfortunately I have to agree a little, Rooner. Last episode could have been a bit better plot wise.
Oh well. Overall very enjoyable and I hope to see further series.

Douglas Henshall is in a film which is due to be released at the end of March called 'Iona' which looks very promising, he had a link to it in his Twitter feed.

Might have to check out the 'Vera' series too now - anyone been watching that?

And yes to Tosh having her own series!

Very disappointing about the massive plot hole re Leanne and the email! It was shockingly shoddy writing.

And where did the old man fit in? He was given a lot of screen time.

Good otherwise, but the email plot hole cast quite a shadow over it all for me.

I'm glad it wasn't just me wondering about the email! Also are we to assume that Asha and the lawyer didn't know each other despite the university connection?
I agree the scheduling was shocking and that probably contributed to the anti climax of the last episode.
Really don't want Tosh to leave though she was amazing

I know she was disturbed but wouldn't it have been easier for Leanne/Lina after she'd seen Asha at the hotel to use the police to get her back in touch?

They could verify who she was and that Asha had been the liasion officer. And they could have met up and Asha could have been stabbed then and Leanne runs off. Don't think she was bothered about being caught.

Much easier than all the trying to get Michael in trouble or killed.

Then we'd have no Shetland story and no Douglas H Grin

Ii think she locked Robbie in the container because he refused to report Michael to the police.

Yes, the emailing made no sense. Did she google "baddy working for other baddy?"

Report
Gatekeeper · 06/03/2016 08:35

she locked Robbie in the container because she wanted Michael to be blamed as she dobbed him hi for the fight between them. Therefore Asha would be invlvoed as well

Don't know HOW she knew Michael's real name or name of slimy lawyer or how to contact him or how she knew he was involved?????. DH has just rolled his eyes as I've asked him about 90 times about this

End of this though and I wanted to shag Dougie Henshall. Have asked dh to buy a battered old peacoat and walk around the hoose with the collar up!

Well, that was as clear as mud.

I think I got it up until Tosh was being asked to identify her attacker, and then I thoroughly lost it.

Was the attacker the Duckface actress's son? What was the connection between her and dodgy lawyer? Who actually killed the victim and why? Was Ciaran Hinds supposed to be on that boat at the same time as the victim, or was that coincidence? Was Freya involved at all? How was Tosh's attack linked to the plot? What did Roadkill Man have to do with it? And the dodgy old bloke in the Home?

Aaargh!

SealSong · 06/03/2016 16:28

Ha ha, far too many big questions in your post to answer with clarity, but Freya, Road Kill Man and Nasty Old Man didn't have anything to do with the murders.

Report
Frika · 06/03/2016 20:39

No, Duck Face's son raped the blonde nurse (whose name I've forgotten) years ago, sinister lawyer covered it up and used it as leverage over Duckface in any cases involving McColl and his own financial irregularities. Leanne locked Robbie Morton into the container to get Ciaran Hinds into trouble after their spat in the hope it would flush out Asha to where she could get at her. Freya's involvement was only that Ciaran Hinds met Asha at the hotel on the mainland to ask for F to be resettled with him in Canada after he testified against McColl. Which is where Leanne saw them and followed CH onto the ferry. Tosh was raped by one of McColl's men to intimidate the police investigating CH's death.

But yes, there are a million plot holes, like Leanne's email, but also why Leanne followed Ciaran Hinds onto the ferry rather than simply following Asha, her real target. Did the child who took the drugs that washed up on the beach live or die? And major issues like why Asha dresses identically for police meetings in Glasgow and for outdoors on Shetland, including colicky high heels Grin

Although, annoyingly, I missed episode 2 because it had vanished from iPlayer, so it's possible stuff was resolved in that... Like who beat up Perez on the beach when he was investigating the washed-up drugs? Was it the young local thug who did low-level drug stuff with Robbie - Sandy's partner's brother/nephew/whoever? And how come the drugs were washed up, anyway? Who threw them overboard - Leanne?

Frika · 06/03/2016 20:48

CLICKY, not colicky!

Just caught up and I'm also a bitHmm I love all the actors, characters and scenery but what a lot of plot holes. Unless the next series will carry the story on, this ending was a bit sloppy.

Ah! Just watched the last episode tonight and have lots of questions too! Thought it was too rushed tonight. Was fine until the news about Leanne and her mum - hadn't thought about Leanne having anything to do with it? But of corse on the ferry it was from her point of view, so a whole lot was missed out. Great acting when she reported his death, though - I didn't guess then she had anything to do with it.

But who hulled the lawyer? What happened to grim old man at nursing home? What about drugs boy with the bad haircut?who sold him the drugs? Does McCollum ever get brought to justice? What happened to the fiscal. Her son raped that blonde woman - does he get prosecuted? Is she fired? Too many unanswered questions for me.

I think they threw in the Leeanne element to add a twist but it wasn't believable. Just tell us a story without the gimmicky bits!

Frika · 07/03/2016 09:29

Surely the dodgy lawyer was killed by the prison guard we saw washing his hands and ignoring lawyer's hanged body? I thought that was a nice touch, actually - we expect the guard to see the body in the mirror, exclaim in horror and jump into action, and then he just doesn't and goes on washing his hands very thoroughly.

Oh, another unanswered question that just occurred to me - was it established that the little boy in the wedding photograph that Michael Thompson had (that the wedding dress shop lady recognised, and said the mother died from heroin) was actually Robbie Morton? And why did the two of them have matching tattoos, if MT had no involvement in R's life? Also, how did he recognise him on the boat - is that what the tattoo was doing as a plot device? (Apologies if this was explained in episode 2, which was whisked off the iPlayer before I saw it...)

It's strongly implied that the victim of the rape by Phyllis Brennan/Duck Face's son is going to press charges, so he will at least face charges without his presumably sacked (and facing serious corruption charges) mother protecting him...?

I don't think there's any evidence/surviving witnesses to put together a case against McColl, unless Phyllis Brennan's testimony about Calvin Sawra and McColl might be enough?

CocktailQueen · 07/03/2016 12:21

Frika - Aha - I just thought he was very unobservant!!

No, I don't think they came back to the photo. Maybe lots of people in Glasgow have that tat?

They might find encrypted files on Sawra's computer to implicate McColl?

Bah. Disappointing nonsense. How did she have his email address and why did Robbie and his father have matching tattoos? That's quite put me off the whole thing. Might read the book, I like Ann Cleeves.

The only way I can think of Leanne having Calvin Sawra's email was if she spoke to the old man at the care home, but can't remember if she went there after Robbie disappeared (because maybe Robbie said something on the boat when he was drunk).

I did think about 10.30 how the hell are they going to finish off this and sure enough it was very confusing. Would have been better if it had been Asha who was responsible although maybe she's going to be in the next series after leaving The Good Wife. Think she was better in this than she was in that.

Feeling sorry for Anna Chancellor still being called Duck Face after all these years. Loved her in The Hour as well, I want her to stay in this just so I can watch her again.

sue it's funny how characters stick, isn't it? She must've been quite memorable (and also, unforgettably, as Caroline Bingley in PandP).

Also, if she knew he was in the container but didn't actually want him to die - as suggested by the fact that she mithered them to look for him - why the hell didn't she something like "I think I saw him near that big container". And what was the rucksack full of drugs for?
