Anyone see Shetland tonight? New drama series on BBC1?

I liked it! Nice to see the scenery, plus Scottish accents on a BEeb programme.

Homebythesea, there is tension between them but also a grudging liking and tolerance also. That's what makes this series great, the subtleties and complexities between characters and the gentle development of these sub stories.

For anyone who missed the first two series they are well worth watching.

Perez is the step-dad. In the books his step-daughter is a little girl, not a teenager. And Jimmy is dark and Spanish-looking! Is the story really going to be over 6 episodes? I assumed it finished last night, although there were a lot of unexplained bits!

MilkGoatee · 23/01/2016 16:14

Thanks for the reminder. I forgot to watch it last night (someone chucked the Radio Times a day early) so I just watched it on iPlayer. I love recognising the roads, lanes and buildings in Lerwick (but can't stand that they say 'lerrick'), like the hospital, police station, town hall and stuff. Haven't been up since 2011, though, and will not again soon either, I imagine.

thegiddylimit · 23/01/2016 16:20

but can't stand that they say 'lerrick'

But isn't that an approximation of the way a Shetlander would say it?

GraceKellysLeftArm · 23/01/2016 16:23

Yes, Fran (Cassie's mother from South) married Duncan but they split when Cassie was very little. Duncan and Perez where best of friends/worst of enemies at school. Fran died on Fair Isle but Cassie chose to remain living with Perez even though Duncan holds the wildest parties up at the Haa and is richer than a Whalsay fisherman.

Seems a shame to have fallen off a cliff at Eshaness having run all the way from Gott in just a matter of minutes. Grin

SealSong · 23/01/2016 17:17

That cliff landscape was stunning

MilkGoatee · 23/01/2016 17:26

Never heard a Shetlander say 'lerrick'. There's actually a funny song (A Scottish Holiday, by the Corries, a spoof on Road to the Isles) where Lerwick is deliberately rhymed with Berwick - which it doesn't.

I don't think there's an absolute fixed pronunciation of Lerwick, and that both saying it as written (luhr-wick) and a more 'back in the throat' way (lair-ooick) are fine. Just that it's not 'lerrick'.

Mind, I'm not a Shetlander, just an import-Scot.

SealSong · 23/01/2016 17:38

Interesting article from the Beeb which says that the storyline continues over the whole six episodes and develops as it goes on.

NatashaBolkonskaya · 23/01/2016 19:37

Have to say, I'm a bit sad that there's no more Ciaran Hinds.

Duncan and Perez where best of friends/worst of enemies at school.
Isn't there something about Duncan expecting Perez to let him off a traffic offence becaue they go way back?

And Jimmy is dark and Spanish-looking!
Yes, much as I like Douglas Henshall, he isn't anything like the Jimmy Perez I imagined from the books.

GraceKellysLeftArm · 23/01/2016 20:07

I don't remember about the ticket - but Perez has turned a blind eye when Duncan was running an illegal gambling ring - and Duncan has often had his fingers in less than salubrious pies!

Perez was an islander who boarded at the hostel and Duncan was in the "cool gang". According to Perez the island kids were bullied by the rest. Although as I remember it, anyone who wasn't Lerwick/Scalloway was seen as second-rate. I can't remember why Duncan and Perez became friends? Did they share a room? From the books I think that geographically Duncan's Haa would've been up around Hillswick... so he'd have gone to school in Brae.

Perez is of course from Fair Isle - although any Spanish sailor would've been generations upon generations ago so I'm sure any swarthy looks would've been long bred out of him. I too think Dougie Henshall is fantastic - but not how I pictured Perez.

The roadkill collector is however atypical Shetland male! Grin

Tsk at me getting over-invested - 'tis only fiction!

SealSong · 23/01/2016 20:34

Hah! I wondered about the roadkill collector - I thought Shetlanders might be a bit offended to have one of them portrayed in such a way..

Interesting to read your comments Gracekelly...it's only fiction but it's fun to hear how similar or not it is to the reality. Do you live there?

gincamelbak · 24/01/2016 18:03

Would you like to go out for a coffee and a digestive biscuit?

Loved Friday's episode. The only people I know who have had any dealings in Shetland say either LerWick (Edinburgers who moved there for a few years) or Ler(w) ick with a v soft w (people who had been involved with the recycling and energy plant).

I was convinced Ciaran Hinds was going to kill the girl. Why is she so invested in Robert? What's her back story?

Gruach · 26/01/2016 00:53

Actually - the moment he pinned her to the wall I knew he wasn't going to kill her. Brilliantly acted - there were so many emotions in his face: anger and suspicion and fear but all far too clumsy and not matching someone intent on cold blooded murder.

It is a shame he's gone just as there was suddenly a reason to feel some sympathy for him. Brave death though. And I'm ashamed to say the school fee paying contract killer was a rather fine figure of a man.

I do hope the roadkill artist gets his happily ever after. It was the best chat up line ever.Grin

Davros · 26/01/2016 08:08

The roadkill artist can take the body from the shore! The filming and scenery is amazing, you almost expect them to zoom in on Jeremy Clarkson trying out a super car!

Gatekeeper · 26/01/2016 16:08

me and dh love this programme and me a bit more these days. i used to always think Dougie Henshall had a bit of a silly face but he's grown on me Wink

GraceKellysLeftArm · 26/01/2016 16:21

Oh agreed! didn't like him at all at first but he's growing on me very much. Also in the first series I really fancied Duncan... however he was in Pulling as the bloke who got a bit slap-happy with Karen and she "defiled" him to teach him a lesson - I always picture him like that now.

absolutelynotfabulous · 26/01/2016 17:36

I fancy Duncan too!!

He's not as I imagined from reading the books either. And yes to Perez being dark in the books. I quite like Perez being a red-head though (read somewhere that Scotland has the highest concentration of red-headed men in the world). Not sure if that's true..

Davros · 26/01/2016 22:31

Higher than Ireland? Shock
I liked DH from Primeval which I also loved (except when they moved it to Canada)

SealSong · 26/01/2016 23:41

We're definitely going to see more of the roadkill artist I reckon.

Digestive Biscuit anyone?
