Anyone else looking forward to this one? After last time I think there a BOys and a Girls island though it is just boys tonight. Roll up roll up anyone who has no idea how to lit a fire or build a shelter whilst knowing they are going on a survival program!

OP posts:

I've just watched Surviving the Island, following the link to the last series posted upthread. The camp the men made was absolutely amazing! A table, chairs, a swing and some comfy beds. WOW! The meal they served BG at the end was incredible. Even had some 'jus' to pour over the fish! The water filtering system was real Heath Robinson stuff, but effective, apparently the water tasted of the old sock which was used as a sieve to trap the nasties..

They seemed so organised and really pulled together as a team. Wonder if this lot will ever achieve anything similar?

ProfYaffle · 25/04/2015 17:19

Thing is though, if you watched the rest of the series it didn't give any hint of how well they'd done! It was all very similar to this one then that episode at the end was a bit of a shock!

Jacana · 25/04/2015 18:03

Shock I'd no idea! If at all possible I'll watch the whole series. Might take some time tho.any idea offhand how many dropped out? It said that it was a 4week experiment experience, this has been extended to 6....

Do any of you remember taransay, I think it was...the uninhabited Hebridean island survival programme? Ben fogle found fame from that. But on that programme you actually saw them building their community. Of course, those were the halcyon days. No blooming bear gryllsGrin

kerstina · 25/04/2015 20:15

Yes I remember Taransay ,really enjoyed that and fell in love with Ben Fogle such a sweet guy. One of the guys picked on him a bit, god knows why i can't remember. Would watch it again if it was repeated!

Jacana · 25/04/2015 22:07

I'd like to watch it too. I seem to remember there was more a general mix of people - some parents with children, were they? I remember Ben had Inca, his dog, with him Smile. Certainly I remember that a couple or more people said that they'd like to return to live there.

IvanOsokin · 26/04/2015 15:37

Taransay was fab, and so different from reality programmes now. There's an interview with one of the people who went on it here.

wheresmyAga · 26/04/2015 17:21

Another Taransay fan here. Too right Jacana, those were the days when reality TV was real. I watched the first series of The Island and while I enjoyed it, compared with Castaway it seems such a set-up.

Jacana · 26/04/2015 17:56

Oh, Castaway, that was it, had forgottenn. Were there already crofts, even tumbled down, for them to use, etc?I remember at the end they'd become quite a cohesive society.

Hope thT this lot(both) realise that their best hope for food is the sea. Except the veggie. Wtf will she do?

CookPassBabtrigde · 26/04/2015 18:08

Does anyone remember Shipwrecked on T4? That was like The Island except the contestants were provided with tinned food, shower gel and make up etc Grin
I've never heard of Castaway but I'm going to check it out! too much time on my hands

Jacana · 26/04/2015 18:09

Sorry, was reading outside before, hadn't seen the link to the interview highlighted. Thanks.

RedToothBrush · 26/04/2015 18:36

Castaway. You lot are showing your age! It was pretty much the first reality tv show.

I'm pretty sure that the two Islands they are using for this are the same ones they used for Shipwrecked.

findingmyfeet12 · 26/04/2015 18:49

When they first found the water the women were desperate to drink it and then went about building a fire to boil it. Did it not occur to them that they'd have to boil any water that they found and ought to get a fire going in anticipation?

Although they are a big group I imagined that they'd eat one pig and leave the other to have a day or so later. They could have made the first one last longer by boiling up the bones and making a broth.

Also the men lost most of their fishing hooks but given all the debris lying around surely they could fashion rudimentary hooks out of something? In the previous series they used drinks can pulls. I wonder whether they tried to use the crock meat as bait when it went off. Im sure some sea fish would come by for a scavenge if they dangled it in the water.

I love being an armchair expert!

TwartFaceBeetj · 26/04/2015 19:08

Yes I remember shipwecked, I remember the first as the best I glued watching it after that it was all battle of the islands stuff. Sure they were caught nicking the camera crews supply,

Iwantacampervan · 26/04/2015 19:12

I can't believe that Castaway was in 2000! It's the sort of reality show that I would consider going on as they had a year to really establish a community. At the time there were characters but no one was really media savvy like reality contestants now.

Jacana · 26/04/2015 19:40

brush. - showing my age? Yep, I'm out and proud..I'm 50!well poss 50 and a teensy weeny bit more[wink) Grin

wheresmyAga · 26/04/2015 20:01

I really wanted to apply for it but my now ex P refused. My plan was to have a Castaway baby Grin. I still regret not doing it.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 27/04/2015 11:42

Did it not occur to them that they'd have to boil any water that they found and ought to get a fire going in anticipation?

I'm always amazed that 3 people try to light the fire for hours while the rest snooze. Surely if 3 teams of 3 tried to light a fire they'd massively increase their chances of doing it? (The men seem to do this too)

Jacana · 27/04/2015 11:50

Naive question, but is this being filmed in real time?

I'm actually starting to worry about both lots, when life is stripped to a continual search for water and food, it's relentless, isn't it?

findingmyfeet12 · 27/04/2015 12:02

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou - I'm pretty sure they only get one set of fire starting equipment. The girls' equipment had to be replaced when it wore away. I guess they'd have to fashion their own equipment or try other methods if they wanted to have more that one simultaneous attempt.

Jacana · 27/04/2015 12:16

And didn't Kyle, was it?, do well using his specs to start one? Good thinking thereStar

findingmyfeet12 · 27/04/2015 12:25

Unfortunately Kyle then took this as his cue to open his own nail bar and spend the next few days giving himself a pedicure while the others had their noses to the grindstone.

He soon perked up when they trapped the croc though. As he was the one to make the kill, I wonder whether he'll think he's earned another extended trip to the nail bar?

CookPassBabtrigde · 27/04/2015 12:34

Haha I thought that finding, he seemed to wade in for the glory of killing the croc, even got to eat it's heart, after having a nice little rest for a few days!

I found it frustrating to watch the same 3 people try to light a fire for hours on end, while the rest just laid around and watched. It must be pretty tiring work so you'd think taking it in turns every hour to preserve a bit of energy would be better. I assume they've all had the same training so they all know how to use the equipment.

Also why didn't some of the women go to find some water while the fire was getting lit? They seem to light the fire then go 'right, we need some water now then'

Jacana · 27/04/2015 12:48

I think it's this reactive rather than proactive trait with the gals that s annoyed me so much to date. [Confused]. Hope that this will change when some earn their stripes as leaders..

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 27/04/2015 13:00

finding

I thought the girls had to be replaced because they just didn't realise it needed to be re-built - but you might be right.

I'd just assumed that they could make another one from the wood on the island - there must be suitable bits on there, or washed up??

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 27/04/2015 13:01

And I too am wondering if Kyle will revert to pedicure now the glory has been & gone....
