What do we think?

JW overacting as normal....

OP posts:
diddl · 18/02/2015 17:41

I'm just watching it.

JW seems to be channelling mrs Overall!

eddiemairswife · 18/02/2015 17:46

Julie Walters always seems to play the same character, though in different settings.

susiedaisy · 18/02/2015 18:42

Not keen on JW tbh although she was good in Harry Potter but her voice sets my teeth on edge in anything else

OneInAMillionYou · 19/02/2015 04:02

Awful disappointment.
Cannot bear Julie Walters, as PP said she is the same in every single part she plays. Beyond belief that she has sustained a career. Her voice and accent are hideous.

diddl · 19/02/2015 07:11

I enjoyed it overall, but there's another 9 eps I think.

i didn't find it that good!

IAmNotDarling · 19/02/2015 07:24

I found it beautiful to look at but horrendous acting. Any scenes with the intrusive woman (wife of the bearded Saint/Sinner husband) were excruciating. Awful sex scene.

I won't be watching next week. What a shame as it had the potential to brilliant. I hope I'm proved wrong.

hollyisalovelyname · 20/02/2015 19:19

I missed the first episode and wasn't able to catch it properly on my pc.
Will I be able to catch up or is it a lost cause -i.e. You have to watch it from episode 1.
I missed both it and A Casual Vacancy last Sunday.
Grrr. Hmm I normally plan my tv week so am very cross with myself.
Is it repeated on any channel ?
Not in UK so BBC player not an option Hmm

cleanmachine · 21/02/2015 18:48

Am I the only one who liked it?

Clawdy · 21/02/2015 18:58

I enjoyed it too, cleanmachine and will certainly be watching the next, wish it wasn't going to be such a long stretch though.

zinher · 21/02/2015 19:02

What time is it and what channel?

cleanmachine · 21/02/2015 19:10

Its on Sunday night on c4.

Clawdy did you think there was something incestuous about the brother and sister?

diddl · 21/02/2015 19:13

That's just how I feel, Clawdy

Not sure about incest.

but some close bond-shared bad childhood for example?

She seemed to hate it there as much as he loved it?

(not directed at me but hope you don't mind me chipping in!)

cleanmachine · 21/02/2015 19:36

Don't mind at all diddl.

Yes there do seem to be lots of mysteries to unravel. I watched it with my ds and he was amazed by how the empire had taken hold of India. It's a really important part of history that is often overlooked.

hollyisalovelyname · 21/02/2015 19:53

Will i be able to catch up despite missing the first episode ?

cleanmachine · 21/02/2015 19:59

Yes I think so. Not a lot happened plot wise.

hollyisalovelyname · 21/02/2015 21:01

Thank you

Clawdy · 22/02/2015 11:01

Interesting about the brother and sister, will be watching closely tonight. I wondered if something will develop between her and the handsome Indian guy after his shooting....

Davros · 22/02/2015 12:52

Just watched it on Catch Up. In reality it was only about an hour long, 1hr17mins in catch up including Lexus links between parts so I think only an hour long. We enjoyed it except I can't help thinking of Ralph as Duggan the bully from The Inbetweeners!

LaVolcan · 22/02/2015 22:10

I enjoyed it too.

Floundering · 23/02/2015 18:37

yep another fan here, I loved it!

It is rather ponderous, lot's of meaningful silences, undercurrents & looks exchanged between characters but I think that gives the feel of the claustrophobic society and the Empire desperately hanging on by their fingernails.

I think the would be Viceroy & his sister have a long standing dark secret, somehow involved with the would be assassin. I suspect he is a closet gay forcing himself to have a liaison that will lead to marriage as it will further his political career.

Agree with pp the wife of the Vicar/orphanage owner is a right royal PITA & social climber but also a rather sad little nobody.

Beautiful scenery & colours and it is great that there are storylines for many of the staff & locals as well as the expats as their lives as so entwined.

MaybeDoctor · 23/02/2015 18:58

Ralph Whelan reminds me of a young Fiennes. :)
But what is the relationship between him and Julie W?

I think the missionary's wife is acting it rather well, whereas Alice is a bit bland.

BOFster · 23/02/2015 19:00

I found myself irritated by Alice's very inaccurate hairstyle. Far too long and unstructured for 1934.

Weebirdie · 24/02/2015 04:49

I was so looking forward to this and only finally caught up with it last night because of where I love.

It was very disappointing.

HoraceCope · 24/02/2015 07:40

i agree that the ralph is closet gay, that missionary's wife is very unhappy

Weebirdie · 24/02/2015 07:45

Just saw episode two and the sound quality wasnt very good so can I just run this by you

Why did Ralph go into the cell with the would be assassin and what were they going in about - was the bloke his dad because it all looked very emotional?

What was in the document forged in the market?

What are the americans and Julie Walters up to?

Thank you Smile
