Diddl - Some of the clubs started to discuss admitting Indian members around the 1910s. In practice, some started admitting Indians just before Independence (though I'm not sure if they did so as early as 1932, when Indian Summers is set?) and some remained exclusively European for some years after Independence.

DH and I were taken to the former British Officers' Club in Bangalore a few years ago by an Indian couple we were staying with in the city. It was a really interesting experience to go there as the British guests of Indian members. The culture in these clubs (food, activities, etc) is still very Westernised and exclusive (though socially, rather than racially, now). They were probably more traditionally British than DH and I!

You mention the sign being offensive, but in 1950s Britain you would see landlords' signs saying 'No Blacks, No Irish, No Children'.

I think it was "no dogs", not children!
We enjoyed this series although didn't understand some of the relationships and characters. Loved Iain and poor Ramu. Will definitely watch next series

Finally caught up and watched the end of this. Been hard work to get through to the end. So wanted to like this. Ending was very unsatisfactory and not sure I would commit to another series. So much seems far fetched all the mixed racial relationships, and mixed society get togethers would this have happened? The main British characters all so unlikeable. Afrins family are sweet but too many different plot lines and hasn't been brought together as had hoped for last episode. Does provide glamour and the period setting/ that colonial era is fascinating but style over substance.
