But isn't Mary's son George the heir to Downton now? So wouldn't she have to stay at Downton so there's no hope of getting rid of her her potential husband would have to move to Downton.

Actress wanted out, diddl. Apparently all the contracts were coming up for renewal and several key actors didn't want to tie themselves in for another 2 or 3 series or whatever was being asked. So Sibyl and Matthew got killed off and the nasty lady's maid left Cora and went to work for somebody else.

Did one of Lady Mary's blokes call it the 'kin e ma' instead of 'sin e ma' (cinema)

is that how posh people pronounced it?

If I was Michelle Dockery I'd be really pissed off. It's one thing to be a bitch if you've got funny lines, but she hasn't. That fucking awful haircut would make you lash out at anyone, though. I'm amazed she didn't kick the dog.

"Maggie Smith and Isis are the best actors in the whole series."

Even when Isis was obviously stuffed in her last two scenes!

There seems to be too much crammed into each episode, so that incidents don't have any time to develop before they are resolved. When did Anna tell Bates that the 'apparatus' was Lady Mary's?

Yes George is the heir, but really, how many men would want to move in the Crawleys ILs?

If Rose & Atticus get married will shrimpie & his wife come over for the wedding, plus O'Brien who is now her lady's maid??Grin

I reckon Isis's death is way sadder than Matthew's or William's, but less sad than Sybil's.

God remember Matthew's dreadful sexy pillow talk.

When did Anna tell Bates that the 'apparatus' was Lady Mary's?

She didn't eddie. He was annoyed at finding it while searching for the button box, which I briefly thought was some kind of euphemism.

If I was Anna I'd tell Bates to look for the button box and then instantly think: 'Oh fuck!' btw. But she didn't.

She was annoyed that he'd gone through her things and for no good reason at all, wouldn't explain that it in fact belonged to Dirty Mary.

Then she reassured him that she didn't mind bearing the children of a pudgy suspected spree killer, and all was forgiven without further explanation.

Julian must have thought: 'Oh shit! We've wrapped the episode up now. Let's just pretend they had a chat off-screen even though they save their most intimate conversations for the servants' parlour.'

Poor Isis would be in pain. She wouldn't just be listless. The kindest thing for Lord 6 to have done was to put some whisky in her water bowl and reach for his service revolver.

It was a bit risky of Cora to say that when her time came she hoped to be sandwiched between two people who loved her, what with only recently having smoothed over the Richard E Grant episode.

Mary's voice is getting more clipped by the episode. Although I love her cloche hats.

I think there is no way a farmer's wife would go to the lady of the manor and tell her she had a granddaughter like that. She would be too worried they would get evicted.

And Cora is so annoyingly nice all the time, I want her to lose it some time!

Regarding the train, I think it's one of those stations where you go to the end of the platform and cross the bridge to get on the platform the other side to get to London.

I agree. A peasant from the village wouldn't just go marching up to the big house and confront the aristos.

There's also no way half the staff could just piss off on jollies whenever they fancied. they'd have been working 12 hour a day, six days a week.

Report
tribpot · 03/11/2014 13:59

Yes - didn't half the staff have the day off on the day of a major dinner party? Mrs Patmore must be super-human, I would be questioning the need for Daisy et al to stay at all if she can do it all single-handedly.

I'm sure the 'kinema' thing must have been on purpose, I suspect because it came from an Ancient Greek term.

Also the way Cora's butler speaks is so totally out of order!

Report
Hakluyt · 03/11/2014 14:11

My father used to say "kinema"

He was very old, very posh and rather prenentious.

Ah, an opportunity to share useless trivia! Kinema was a rival British term to cinema, which comes from the Greek word for 'move' (for moving picture) which starts with a k in Greek (like kinetic). Odeon comes from the Greek word for a little theatre for poetry readings.

There's never any mention of Lady Edith having a Lady's Maid. Do we just assume she has one but we don't see her or would she not have one as she's not the eldest daughter?

It's just such a lot was made of Mary taking simple dresses with her to Liverpool so she could do them up herself so I wonder who helps Edith and if she does have a maid why didn't she go with her when she ran away or if she was left behind why wasn't anything said of her not having a Mistress to work for?

I love that Mary was told to wear rags as they were going to the kinema. Makes me feel better when I go there in my old clothes now - I am obviously upper class dressing down!!

I think Bates referred to the box being Mary's in this episode, as if they had discussed it off camera.
