For continued waffling... Smile

OP posts:

Thanks for the family tree, it was helpful. My point about Rosamund was that she wasn't at the wedding. Even Tony Gillingham was at the wedding (or was it the other one?)!

Ooh, maybe I'm onto something - are Tony Gillingham and Charles Blake your twins, BOF?

fancyanotherfez · 10/11/2014 14:04

That family tree- why are they all Crawleys? The original Crawleys had 2 daughters, Violet and Roses grandmother. Did they both marry someone called Crawley?? Maybe that explains why they are all a bit dim...

QueenOfThorns · 10/11/2014 14:09

But Violet's married name is Crawley, not her birth name. Or are they inbred?

Chippednailvarnish · 10/11/2014 14:20

Maybe that explains why they are all a bit dim... Grin Arf

diddl · 10/11/2014 14:22

previous Marigold?

During this scene, wasn't it remarked on that Marigold & Edith had the same coloured hair?

Then it seemed to be the little girl that BOF linked to?

QueenOfThorns · 10/11/2014 14:24

Now it's becoming clear - Mary can't get married until she finds a man with the same surname. She was going to marry Patrick Crawley, but he died, so she married Matthew Crawley. There are no more Crawleys left, so she's stuffed. Serves her right for being such a bitch to Edith.

millimat · 10/11/2014 14:27

I'm confused as the trailer for last night showed both Bates and Anna in jail but only Anna was arrested. Plus it showed Tom jetting off but that never happened? Maybe it was part of the Christmas trailer?
I thought Anna did go too London on that day, didn't she say she'd gone to deliver a message? No sure why they'd (Carson and Mrs Hughes) lieabout her not being there though?

fancyanotherfez · 10/11/2014 14:31

But the family tree said she's the daughter of the Crawleys, not married to the son (wails) It is very small on my computer though and my eyesight is quite bad, so I may be wrong.

diddl · 10/11/2014 14:36

is this better?

It doesn't show that her parents were Mr & Mrs Crawley-that's Matthew's paternal GPs.

Also, can't see another Marigold!

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 10/11/2014 14:45

Just trying to get my head round that family tree.

Violet is shown as Crawley because that is her married name.

Susan is shown as nee Crawley. This would mean that her father was called Crawley.

It's possible that Susan's mother and Violet were Crawleys, I suppose, but not that likely.

I also think Susan's father was not called Crawley. In other words, there has been a mistake made on this fictional family tree.

fancyanotherfez · 10/11/2014 15:02

eh? Mr and Mrs Crawley at the top, I presume they are the matriarch/ partiarchs. Who are their children? There is no line going from Violets husband, just a line from Violets and her sisters head to them. The white dotted line to Reginald Crawley is 'distant relative, but it is interspersed with a gold line from the Violet/Susans mother line!

Maybe because they only had daughters, she is the heir to the estate and has kept her maiden name?

BOFster · 10/11/2014 15:03

That will be it.

Marigold is Cora's sister, according to that dodgy family tree I posted.

diddl · 10/11/2014 15:07

I thought I'd posted a bigger version of the same family tree & I can't see a Marigold on it at all.

I thought that Cora only has a brother?

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 10/11/2014 15:12

No, fancy, it's just not laid out very clearly. You have to look at the colour of the lines - there's a key showing what they indicate. The white dotted line does a bit of a swerve round the gold line which is meant to show that they're separate.

BOFster, you need to get to Specsavers! It says Harold, not Marigold. Grin

limitedperiodonly · 10/11/2014 15:19

How does that work? Mr and Mrs Crawley, were born presumably in the early 19th century without a title, appeared to have had two daughters - Violet and an unnamed one.

Violet married someone who is identified as 'Violet's Husband'. Surely she'd have changed her name and rank to his? I'm guessing he was an Wink

They had two children, Lord 6 and Rosamund. Okay, but why is their surname Crawley?

maizieD · 10/11/2014 15:30

I wouldn't stress over that family tree; it's a just a crap made-up thing. Made up, too, by someone who has no idea about relationships within families! Or, perhaps, about how the inheritance of titles works...

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 10/11/2014 15:32

No, Mr and Mrs Crawley are not related to Violet.

It must have gone something like this:

Third Earl has a younger son who has to go off and make his living in a profession. Over the years this branch of the family loses touch with the ones who live at Downton. This chap's grandson or greatgrandson is Matthew.

The Third Earl's eldest son becomes the Fourth Earl. He has two surviving sons.

The younger one has a son (Robert's cousin) and a grandson who go down with the Titanic.

Meanwhile the elder son becomes the Fifth Earl. He marries Violet and has two children, Robert and Rosamond. Robert becomes Sixth Earl.

Robert has three daughters but can't leave them the estate and the title, so his heir is his cousin, next heir is cousin's son (Patrick?). Since they both die, they have to go back up the family tree and down again till they come to Matthew.

diddl · 10/11/2014 16:04

On wiki, Marigold is down as Marigold Gregson??!!

The only two who knew about the baby at the time she was named were Violet & Rosamund, so a flower name isn't that out there!

BOFster · 10/11/2014 16:07

Is Marigold Harold? Grin[grinGrin. Oh, that will keep me laughing all day. Glasses it is then Grin.

fancyanotherfez · 10/11/2014 16:15

Ok. I'm going to put my Doctor Who head on ( a la Worsel Gummidge) and just go with the flow. On the bright side, I have 4 seasons of Downton to catch up with between now and the Christmas special Grin

Clawdy · 10/11/2014 17:29

The preview for last night's episode said something like "Tom makes a heart-breaking decision". Now that didn't happen,so I bet it's going to happen in the Xmas special. I think he'll go off abroad and decide to leave Sibby at Downton, which is highly unlikely but heart-breaking for him.....

curiousgeorgie · 10/11/2014 19:56

I think I missed something... How do Anna & Bates have a house in London?

diddl · 10/11/2014 20:02

It was left to Bates by his mother.

If tom does go, he'll take Sibby, won't he?

fancyanotherfez · 10/11/2014 20:13

Lord G. was playing with Sibby on the floor, so I'm presuming Tom will take her to Boston!

Pipbin · 10/11/2014 20:15

I didn't approve of the idea of letting her win at snakes and ladders.
Very poor form.
