I just realised- the old grey haired bloke in the restaurant was the boy from Press Gang. I am old!

Oh, snapping the chocolate was definitely breaking the bread I thought limited and sunshine - just surprised he didn't offer some to Adam, or at least them both take a piece, but perhaps wisely they might have just been trying not to over-do it - some subtlety is good I think

limitedperiodonly · 25/04/2014 13:54

Lord of the Dance does it to me too satans. I've been humming it just now and someone asked if I was all right Grin.

Oh Happy Day does it too.

limitedperiodonly · 25/04/2014 13:55

Thanks juggling, btw.

limitedperiodonly · 25/04/2014 13:59

Also I forgot how small Tom Hollander is and how tall Liam Neeson is. They quickly sat down didn't they? Smile

RufusTheReindeer · 25/04/2014 14:17

Love lord of the dance

We played it at my best friends funeral, so it means different things to me now (I used to like it because it was jolly IYSWIM)

I like Go tell it on the mountain as well (won't let the children leave the nativity mass on Christmas Eve until they play it and then I annoy them by singing it all the way home)

limitedperiodonly · 25/04/2014 14:37

The tune is what fools you rufus but the words are so dark and profound if you know the story. It is genius.

I'm not even a believer, but I was brought up in the faith. No matter, I think it fits any kind of situation of struggle and hope - and you wondered if I'd understand you satans Wink

Forgot Go Tell It On The Mountain. I also like Joshua Fought The Battle Of Jericho and We Three Kings, especially this verse:

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathes of life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb

And the last happy one:

Glorious now behold Him arise
King and God and Sacrifice
Alleluia, Alleluia
Earth to heav'n replies

I'm welling up.

RufusTheReindeer · 25/04/2014 14:47

limited

I love the line, "I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black it's hard to dance with the devil on your back"

Completely agree with the We 3 kings verse, it just goes down and down and down!

Catholic christened atheist here but some "religious" hymns and readings and things make me cry...maybe memories of my mum?

limitedperiodonly · 25/04/2014 15:27

Snap on the 'sky turned black' line and also on Catholic turned atheist.

To be honest, I don't think I will be an atheist on my death bed. I like this

edamsavestheday · 25/04/2014 15:28

I used to think Lord of the Dance was a bit naff and hippy-ish when I was at school (Assembly with hymns and readings every day) but I quite like it these days. Nice that they went for the scribe and Pharisee verse, IIRC, not the sky turning black (which is the one I can remember off by heart - funny what stays with you)

LittleBairn · 25/04/2014 15:44

Blush I'm a Christian and I didn't pick up on the allegories. I really do stitch off my brain when I watch TV!

RufusTheReindeer · 25/04/2014 16:14

limited oh it wouldn't surprise me if I had a deathbed about faceGrin

little I once had a "debate" with my very, very Christian SIL about a bible "fact". I won!!!!

Oh shit! Going straight to hell for that one Smile

limitedperiodonly · 25/04/2014 17:11

Watching it again. I realise I worked it out a bit earlier -when the archdeacon was questioning Nigel about the different kinds of kisses.

So good

Davros · 25/04/2014 17:27

I lived it and wouldn't have picked up on any of the allegories without this thread (commited atheist, communist parents)!
TH has been in two of my favourite films, "Enigma" and "A Good Year" with Russell Crowe, also loved The Fucker

limitedperiodonly · 25/04/2014 17:43

Also, the thing about the black characters. I know it's been addressed but I want to echo that I know people like Adoha - from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

That's the problem between Anglican churches. Lovely people do hold quite unlovely views if you're the sort of person who thinks being gay is okay.

It's okay for me because I'm Catholic, so we just hate poofs anyway. Ostensibly. Wink Shock

But talking to people is a bit of an eye-opener.

limited what's the significance of the different types of kisses? Or do you mean it's a reference to the Judas kiss?

Icimoi · 26/04/2014 10:51

I'd like to think the resurrection would see all the difficulties resolved, but I don't really see a way back for the likes of Nigel and Adoha unless we're getting a massive lesson in repentance and forgiveness.

BookABooSue · 26/04/2014 12:21

I was wondering if we'd already had the resurrection? He left the cross, met God, 'appeared' to Alex . . .If that's the case then I think he's leaving the church and the next episode will be about his new life (with a locked room meeting with all the St Saviour's crew. [Sad]

MrsCakesPremonition · 26/04/2014 12:28

I felt that the scene on the hill was more like something from the garden of Gethsemane, god giving him a bit of a boost to face the trials ahead.

Yes, I thought it was that too antoinette. It was pretty obvious - not that I'm complaining. It needed to be obvious to make me sit down and pay more attention Grin

TinklyLittleLaugh · 26/04/2014 14:58

No, surely there has to be a happy ending, the resurrection of Adam's faith? I want so much for them to score some gorgeous little rural parish full of decent, pleasant people.

As for the baby not being Christened, is it not a bit of a C of E joke that Vicar's always struggle to get round to Christening their own kids?

limitedperiodonly · 26/04/2014 15:40

I wouldn't mind if it was a really sad ending. I know he's not real, but I want Adam to be happy, but I think it would be more realistic that way. I can't see how Alex would be able to continue her job in a gorgeous rural parish.

And I'm not sure they are that gorgeous for people who don't fit in and that goes for both of them.
