I just realised- the old grey haired bloke in the restaurant was the boy from Press Gang. I am old!

It's the cock crowing after Peter denies Jesus. I thought it was the most obvious direct parallel and was what set me off looking for others.

BackforGood · 24/04/2014 12:04

Yes, it was the 3x denial that was the first I'd noticed of the theme running through this series - thanks for all the detail on this thread, so much of it had just passed me by. Duh Blush.
Have really been enjoying the series though - yes, much darker than the first series, but much more watchable for it being so.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 24/04/2014 12:17

I did think the analogies from the 3 x denial by Colin onwards were well done though - an unusual, creative, and brave piece of writing/drama

SunshineBossaNova · 24/04/2014 12:52

I'd missed the significance of the siren and the 3 knocks, thanks for that :)

When I learned about the bible as a child, I'd never really thought about how much it would have hurt Jesus (as a man) to have his friends turn against him.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 24/04/2014 13:04

That last episode was award winning telly - I hope it's up for something.

I missed some of the analogies- atheist here- but the ones I caught were so beautifully weaved into the plot/characters that It was really impressive and heartbreaking.

RufusTheReindeer · 24/04/2014 14:05

Atheist here but I did get goosebumps at Liam Nelson talking to Adam and the hand washing

Trouble is I remember Tom Hollander from his very small scene in The thick of it...playing a character known as the Fucker

Love Rev, I really hope it's a good ending. I'm not going to be very happy on Monday if it doesn't work out ok for him

MrsCakesPremonition · 24/04/2014 14:32

Just seen a picture of Adam suited and booted in an office. Not happy.

mummytime · 24/04/2014 14:34

I've seen a picture of him in a field in a dog collar holding a dog, but not sure if you've seen that?

SpringHeeledJack · 24/04/2014 14:40

I thought the analogies were a bit clunky

by the time we got to the hand washing bit I actually groaned

but then I'm a cynical old ratbag. A COR who's marking her spot for next week

edamsavestheday · 24/04/2014 14:56

Rufus, I first noticed Tom Hollander in Pirates of the Caribbean!

BookABooSue · 24/04/2014 16:44

Ah, I'm so happy there's a thread about Rev. I don't know anyone else who watches it. I thought last night's episode was brilliant but I think Tom Hollander said the series has a bleak ending which doesn't bode well for next week Sad I was hoping he'd be offered a nice new rural parish.

Regarding Mary Magdalene, I thought it would have been Ellie - divorced, kissing a forbidden man. Although she was pretty harsh to Adam last night.
Unless they did a gender swop and Mary Magdalene was Mick?! He did turn up in one episode as a 'woman' Hmm selling his services. . .

Helpys · 24/04/2014 17:31

Mary Magdalene is Alex. The 'fallen woman Mary Magdalene' is a confusion/ myth with no biblical basis. There was a prostitute who washed Jesus' feet also called Mary but MM was, in the bible, part of the group of disciples and very faithful.

RufusTheReindeer · 24/04/2014 17:49

edam again playing a naughty man!! Not Adam obviously

Trouble is I need to stop myself shrieking "it's the fucker" every time I see him

MrsCakesPremonition · 24/04/2014 19:36

I remember him first in Ab Fab and later as a rather good Mr. Collins.

PansBigChainring · 24/04/2014 19:43

On a totally different line...wasn;t Colin hilarious when asked by Robert re Ellie:
"He said he'd had a wank over her. Or I might have said that. Can't remember. But she's as fit as butcher's window."
Is that mentioned in the New Testament at all.....?

The thing though that Adam might have coverted Ellie as he and Alex hadn't had sex is a rather stretching a point.

dotty2 · 24/04/2014 19:50

I don't think you should push the analogies too far (and in places I thought the writers pushed them a little far, actually). After all, Jesus wasn't a married man with a baby. (Or not in the Biblical account, anyway). So his lapse with Ellie might be seen as a generalised 'temptation' - but of course that's not what Jesus was tried for by Pilate, so you can't make too neat a fit.

And I think the Bishop said 'ite in pacem', didn't he? Surely someone as posh as Ralph would have had a classical education and know about the ablative.

Still like it, though and want a Resurrection ending.

dotty2 · 24/04/2014 19:51

Mr Collins! Only just remembered that - thank you.

I think its a very black comedy - more like Boys from the Blackstuff in the 80s.

Having watched it the bit where Adoha spits is obviously Adam hallucinating, seeing his congregation in the people he passes. The allegory really makes the name of the main character very appropriate.

I also noticed that Tom Hollander has been involved in the writing of this series, which I didn't think he was for the previous ones.

The Archdeacon was a Roman Centurion in the dream sequence. I've made the dcs watch the most recent episode, having half watched the rest of the series and we'll all watch it together on Monday.
Adam and God on the hill was the most amazing bit of television I've ever seen. I keep thinking about it.

mummytime · 25/04/2014 10:54

I loved Adam and God on the hill. The perfect setting, and the dialogue was great.

limitedperiodonly · 25/04/2014 11:30

I cried when he was dancing on the hill with Liam Neeson. I was watching it iPlayer while I was cooking so I wasn't really paying much attention at first.

The first time I realised what was going on was when Colin denied him - I think someone else said that. I'm going to have to watch it again.

When the bishop broke the chocolate - was that significant?

SunshineBossaNova · 25/04/2014 13:36

I wondered if the chocolate was just an excuse for the Bishop to have to wash his hands limited.
