It's Sunday morning. Man is looking at a job, DD is snoring, I'm alone, bitter, watching saved HIGNFY on telly. Uuurrrgghh Skinner hosting, how fucking horrible is he? I can't watch now.

Keith Lemon is a character played by Leigh Francis, people are taking about him on this thread as if he is real!

ExasperatedSigh · 04/06/2013 22:44

Everything Leigh Francis has done has been embarrassing unfunny shit, maybe that's where the confusion arises.

Can't believe I'm the only Gervais hater on this thread. FOR SHAME.

I can't bear Gervais either Exasperated I also don't like Jason repetitive sex scandal Manford, you could see he was flavour of the month at the BBC a while ago as he was on everything, then he effed it up with his sexting scandal. They were just rehabilitating his image and something else was revealed. Also Millican, unfunny and everybloodywhere.

I like Milton Jones though, and Bill Bailey.

Gervais is atrocious. His Simpsons episodes are surely the unfunniest (and that's saying something because The Simpsons hasn't been funny since the late '90s).

I'm going to stick my neck out and suggest that Russell Brand haters have seen him on the odd end of year show and taken against him (or believed the Daily Mail). I cried actual tears of mirth at Ponderland and his stand up is genuinely hilarious. Love Stewart Lee, too (anyone remember Histor's Eye?).

Mitch Benn Davros.

Would add gervais and all his sidekicks to the list ( whoever that bloke is on an idiot abroad for example).

Yoko how dare you! I've never read the daily mail Grin .

I can't bear Ricky Gervais either but I just find him smug and unfunny, he doesn't make my flesh crawl.

I've never seen Russell Brand's comedy but he's openly admitted to abusing women. Nasty piece of work, no matter how right on he claims to be

Sacha Baron Cohen.

I watched a programme on Dave Allen and he was as funny as I'd remembered. The thing that stood out most of all was the quiet delivery, what I really hate is all the marching about and shouting - McIntyre in particular, but actually most of them seem to think that anything delivered in a shout is funny - it's not!

Dave Allen was fantastic (and quite sexy!). Can't say the same for tommy cooper or Frankfie Howerd!

Report
wintera · 05/06/2013 18:14

I'm gonna be brave and admit something to you all right now. I have never ever found Tommy Cooper funny. Not ever. There I said it. I'll be struck down by lightening now most likely.

Jason Mumford - can't believe no one's mentioned him yet.

I have to say, I just hate almost all comedians these days. It happened when I started re-acquainting myself with feminist writing, going on the FWR board, reading Everyday Sexism and starting to realise that 'edgy' and 'controversial' is just plain old sexism and racism dressed up in new clothes. Mock the Week is fucking nasty and sordid and I don't give Dara O'Brian - who should know better - a free pass on that.

All of these mock the week clones are all the same - the same laddish down the pub 'gags' / anti-intellectual posing as 'skeptical'/ the nasty insults against easy targets / is it ironic or isn't it? / 'I'm just saying what you're thinking' arseholes.

Frankie Boyle, John Bishop, Russell Howard, Jason Manford, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, Peter Kay, Hugh Dennis, David Baddiel, Charlie Broker - please fuck off.

I will let both Carr brothers live - only just. I have a certain fondness for their schtick. No-one will ever cure me of my irrational passion for Russell Brand even though he is also a nasty twat - though at least one with a love for language. I like Lee Mack and Sean Lock as well because they respectively created one of the most appalling guilty pleasure sitcoms of all time (Not Going Out) and one of the most under-rated (15 Storeys High)

I am quite pleased to see one person not mentioned yet and that is Russell Kane, who I am fond of. Not sure why.

I personally think Dave has killed both the art of stand up and many of the credibility of stand up comedians - it's just too over-exposed now.

Gervais doesn't give me the shivers, though that big cheesy smile of his does makes me want to slap him, and he is grossly overrated. I mean what has he done since The Office that was even moderately good? They seem to love him in America though.

I agree with posters who mentioned Dave Allen. He was hilarious. So was Billy Connolly in the 70's. My dsis and I laughed so much, Dad banned it. We only had one TV then Sad

The Iranian comedian on the Comedy Store. I only know she is Iranian because she keeps bloody telling us! I appreciate it's part of the act, but grrrrrrr. She is funny though. Sometimes.

flippinada · 05/06/2013 20:03

Do you mean Shappi Khorshandi crushed?

Not that there's a glut of Iranian-British comedians out there or anything....

For some reason when OP mentioned 'males your flesh crawl', all the comedians that sprung immediately to mind were male. For pretty much the reasons given by Tondelayo.

Report
flippinada · 05/06/2013 20:04

Ahem...female Iranian-British comedians. In case anyone pops up and mentions Omid Djalili.

crushedintherush · 05/06/2013 20:06

.....and who can forget Les Dawson. Funniest ever.

Not keen on many out there at the moment, but Keith Lemon makes my teeth gnash. I hate the man. The stupid fake tan that goes right round his arms. Yak.

crushedintherush · 05/06/2013 20:09

Forgot about Omid Jhalili. Is he still going? Not seen him for ages. And he wasn't that funny either.

I didn't like Russell Brand until I saw him interview members of the Westboro Church (or whatever it's called), who I think are scum. Was impressed by his restraint.

I never saw his stand up crushed so can't comment but I loved his turn in Black Books as the the sleazy photographer. I love pretty much everything about Black Books though :).
