Get in here Stairs :o

I thought that was a bit harsh Bessie. I expected all three to go through although I think they like Rukmini though.

And just as an aside, why has John taken to wearing his chef's whites all the time, he never used to do that?

StuffezLaYoni · 18/04/2013 20:45

Yes that is harsh!
Is my memory playing tricks, or has this series of MC been particularly undemanding? I'm sure in previous years the contestants were having damn good cracks at real high quality dishes. Didn't they have Michel Roux senior one year showing them how to make a croque em Bouche?

Bessie123 · 18/04/2013 20:46

His shirts are in the wash? He spilt ketchup all over himself before filming and had to keep them on for continuity?

Bessie123 · 18/04/2013 20:49

So Rukhmini is in, then

StuffezLaYoni · 18/04/2013 20:50

Hey, I would definitely try that fishy egg thing!

Bessie123 · 18/04/2013 20:51

She should have stuck that fishy egg on spinach and colcannon

lirael · 18/04/2013 20:51

I don't get it. Four got through yesterday - Saira, Larkin, Dale and Shivi. But only three going through today? How come?

Bessie123 · 18/04/2013 20:56

Oh come on, a fishy scotch egg is not at all inventive. They are all over east london

TSSDNCOP · 18/04/2013 20:59

I wouldn't put any of those 4 through.

StuffezLaYoni · 18/04/2013 20:59

Me neither. Larkin to win.

TSSDNCOP · 18/04/2013 21:00

Lirael I noted that, I reckon it's because these are crap.

StuffezLaYoni · 18/04/2013 21:01

I've never had one, but I don't live in London!

lirael · 18/04/2013 21:06

But that means that the people in Weds heat had a better chance of getting through, which is unfair, surely?

Gracelo · 19/04/2013 08:46

I don't think they planned to have 4 going through on Wednesday and only 3 on Thursday. I assume they would have taken 4 through on Thursday as well if there would have been 4 who were good enough.
Not a great lot this year.

LaVolcan · 19/04/2013 09:41

I think they only put Rukmini through because she was good in previous rounds. She didn't really shine in last night's rounds. They couldn't really say 'your none of you up to it; you're all going home'.

Bessie123 · 19/04/2013 09:43

I agree, everything they cooked was a bit meh

LaVolcan · 19/04/2013 10:24

Of course we don't know what gets edited out of these progs, but....

This task of catering for a large number of people who are on a tight timetable comes up every time! The contestants should be able to go with a few working ideas in their heads. Don't any of them have a work canteen? Could they ask the chefs there what recipes work for large numbers?

I know it's not as simple as taking a recipe for 4 and scaling it up, but they should have a few tricks up their sleeves e.g. some stewy type dish can be got ready a little bit early and won't spoil if it's cooked a bit longer, more liquid can be added if it's getting a bit dry. Nothing which needs last minute cooking. Those sorts of tricks.

lirael · 19/04/2013 11:39

I'm glad Rukmini went through as she was great in previous rounds. I think she was really hampered by the team she was in - Fahana was obviously not used to working in a team, Dave couldn't lead and Rukmini herself was in a flap a lot of the time. I think if she's had Natalie telling her what to do she'd have been fine! :)

lirael · 19/04/2013 11:41

I'd quite like Natalie to win - but also like Saira, Larkin and Ollie. Though Ollie is a bit Fabulous Baker Brothers...

LittleAbruzzenBear · 19/04/2013 12:16

Hi everyone. Having sleeping issues with DS2 (8MO) so haven't been on the thread, but will try and dip in and out.

Right now I am watching last night's episode. I really like Natalie and it's great seeing women going further this year, let's hope there is at least one in the final! Natalie was very good on the catering challenge, leadership and her team's menu choices were spot on for the occasion.

Rukmini was very calm and immediately thought on the spot of alternatives when John queried two lots of rice and the sponge pudding. I think her team may have been stuffed without her.

Gracelo · 19/04/2013 12:32

I thought Rukmini's pudding with the plums and the cardamom custard looked fab. I might have to try and do a version of it this weekend.
I'm glad she went through, I also think she'd have done better in a different team.

Gracelo · 19/04/2013 12:34

oh, one thing I was wondering about during the mass catering challenge was if they make it even more difficult for them on purpose. At one point Ollie was grating cheese by hand. Surely in a kitchen catering for 200 people they have some whizzy electric cheese grater thingie or buy in already grated cheese.

LittleAbruzzenBear · 19/04/2013 14:26

That plum pudding did look delicious!

Yes, they must have some labour-saving devices when catering for that many people. Either that or Ollie didn't think to ask!

I was a bit Hmm at the breakfast rounds on both days. Were they filming at breakfast time and so that's how John and Gregg decided, because they were hungry?! I think they should have done something a little more.....well....Masterchef-y at this level.

Tonight's should be good.

Gerrof · 19/04/2013 14:40

Why is it so bloody boring this year? The format is a load of rubbish I don't want to watch 2 nights of mass catering breakfast cookery on Masterchef in the quarter final.

I don't give a monkeys about anyone. I like Nathalie but this series has been so rubbish I don't really 'know' anyone else.

Really, really disappointed.

LaVolcan · 19/04/2013 14:48

Why do John and Greg HAVE TO SHOUT, when they are standing right next to each other??

Larkin is good but a bit pretentious for me. Saira I like and would hope that she wins.
