I beg to differ, Davros... Grin

Fiderer · 18/10/2012 08:14

We've no idea what Sybil was doing in Dublin. She would have had to give up nursing as a married woman, wouldn't she? In England they had to, at least up to WWII. My knowledge comes from Monica Dickens' book about her being a nurse during the war, don't know when they changed the rules. Shocking really.

I liked the feisty Sybil who helped the maid Gwen get a job. Though I never understood how she could have practised typing without anyone hearing Grin

Wonder what the "plan" is now then?

Surely Branson won´t stay at DA to be kept by his FIL-although it suits Matthew well enough?!

And he won´t be able to afford care for baby Sybil.

So he´ll leave without her?

MarthasHarbour · 18/10/2012 09:20

diddl its the other way around with Matty and Lord FBB - Matthew is 'keeping' his FIL, with all that money his other FIL gave him for breaking Lavinia's heart on her deathbed..... Confused Hmm

diddl · 18/10/2012 09:32

Well atm, yes-but since he returned wounded he´s been living there for nothing, hasn´t he?

In fact since him & his Mum have been at Downton I assume they haven´t been paying to live in Grantham house, or for the staff.

Fiderer · 18/10/2012 09:42

Matthew only moved into DA when he married Mary. Assumed he was living with Isobel at Crawley House. Wonder if they pay rent for that? Lord G invited them to come and live there when Matthew became the heir?

Davros · 18/10/2012 09:53

What the hell is that on the link posted by justspidero a few posts up?!

Fiderer · 18/10/2012 10:14

The lovely Richard Armitage being a dwarf in The Hobbit.

Saltire · 18/10/2012 10:14

It's taken me all night to recover from that picture of the gorgeous Richard Armitage in the Hobbit.

Now I definately have a reason to go to the cinema to see it

ZZZenAgain · 18/10/2012 10:14

think Sybil didn't have time to do much in Dublin. She got pregnant pretty much straight away if my calculations are right so she was doing the housework and throwing up I suppose. Lord 6 said there'd be some money but not much so not sure if she would have had staff, maybe "just" one maid.

Fiderer · 18/10/2012 10:15

Er, having looked again, "lovely" when not in dwarf-mode.

ZZZenAgain · 18/10/2012 10:16

the butler/valet at Crawley House was paid for by Lord 6, wasn't he? I remember there was some fuss about Matthew saying they didn't need a butler and he could dress himself so no use for a valet either. Did the cook come with them?

Chubfuddler · 18/10/2012 10:44

Mrs bird came from Manchester with the crawleys she was their cook/housekeeper. As upper middle class household they would have had at least one servant but certainly not a valet.

JennaLemon · 18/10/2012 10:54

reckon tom will leave without baby. he'll be sad and all,,,, but it would have been unfathomable that a single man without means look after a baby in those days. He'll be a bit like a slightly higher up the food chain version of poor ethel. he'll kiss baby goodbye and cry and his sacrifice will be that she will live the life her mother was meant to. he can get on with either being a journalist or getting into trouble, whichever path calls out to him.

so, is baby's name definitely Sybil? i only watched it last night and I didn't hear where they said that.

Davros · 18/10/2012 10:55

Yes, Richard Armitage, lovely though he is, does not make a good Hobbit dwarf. But then, does anyone? Not my stylee at all! Put him back in black leather a la Robin Hood

JennaLemon · 18/10/2012 10:56

yeh richard armitage phwoar. anybody who hasn't seen north and south should watch it. cheap on amazon now. cos it's quite old at this stage.

ppeatfruit · 18/10/2012 11:03

OMG R.A. as the Hobbit bleedin' 'ell Shock His ears remind me of David Bowie in Labyrinth a really hot Goblin King (sorry i'm no good at links; google it) Grin

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed · 18/10/2012 11:40

Poor Richard trying to make a Tolkein dwarf sexy. Nope.
Is there an estate manager? Branson was suggested as a help to Matthew sort the estate out.

Saltire · 18/10/2012 11:45

He doesn't need to try very hard to make the Dwarf look sexy Grin. That man would look hot wrapped up in manky newspaper and string

ppeatfruit · 18/10/2012 11:50

Exactly saltire Grin

SugariceAndScary · 18/10/2012 12:03

I've only just watched the birth/death scene and I found it quite upsetting but great acting.

Agree that Pickle will go back to Ireland and leave Syb with the Crawleys then change his mind and try to get her back, probably bring his family with him for back up.

Matthew is a drip both in looks and personality, was he always like this, blurgh!

Oh yes bring Richard A into it,god I'd do him. Grin

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed · 18/10/2012 12:17

Agree he would look sexy wrapped in newspaper and tied up with string but am adamant he looks ridiculous smouldering as Dwarf.

HoratiaWinwood · 18/10/2012 12:17

GEORGETTE HEYER AUDIO BOOKS NARRATED BY RICHARD ARMITAGE?!!

squoosh · 18/10/2012 12:19

I think Horatia's knickers just exploded.

squoosh · 18/10/2012 12:20

I'm not enamoured with him in his Hobbity costume. My ardour has dampened slightly.
