It seems obvious that if Vera's friend is telling the truth then Vera would be making a poisoned pie for someone else. Who? Did she intend it for Bates but he stormed off and as he said was back on the train by the time it was eaten.
For someone else? Newspaper guy? I don't think he was likely to eat homemade pie in Vera's house.
So did she then eat pie in pique and to implicate Bates- she would not have known he bought poison would she?
It makes no sense. They have gotten themselves into a knot. Unless some genius revelation turns up.

JennaLemon · 17/10/2012 11:58

how do you all know so much about the plot to poison? i have seen all episodes apart from the most recent (on tongiht) and i don't know anything about a poison pie)

squoosh · 17/10/2012 12:00

It's all Bates and Anna talk about at prison visiting time.

JennaLemon · 17/10/2012 12:03

Vera was also in series 5 (i thiiiink) of Dexter.

JennaLemon · 17/10/2012 12:03

0_o

my ability to tune out at the sight of bates is quite well honed I think!

JennaLemon · 17/10/2012 12:05

When I'm FINALLY watching it tonight I 'll be thinking of all the funny commnts on here

Merrin · 17/10/2012 12:13

I think Vera was scrubbing her hands to get the poison out because she intended to kill Bates not herself, and accidentally killed herself 'before he even arrived' (hence the halo effect) because it was absorbed into her system.

JennaLemon · 17/10/2012 12:16

so did she accidently eat her own pie, knowing it was poisoned?

Merrin · 17/10/2012 12:20

Could she have been poisoned as she made it?

squoosh · 17/10/2012 12:21

did she accidently eat her own pie

I'm sorry but they gave me a mega smirk!

JennaLemon · 17/10/2012 12:24

if it was poisoned chocolate spread on toast, i might accidently eat it!

JennaLemon · 17/10/2012 12:25

oh you dorty whore

[slow here]

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed · 17/10/2012 12:25

That would work. Vera absorbs poison whilst making pie, despite scrubbing.
I think I haven't registered Bates as having an Irish accent because I too zone him out atm. Having watched some YouTube clips I am not sure but Vera is Irish. Forgot how striking her looks were.

What about the letter Vera was off to post as she met her friend?

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed · 17/10/2012 12:27

Grin at accidental pie eating. "that bastard Bates he's gotten away again. Oooh I do feel queer. Oh bugger!"

JennaLemon · 17/10/2012 12:29

I wonder what kind of poising goes through your skin!?

So that pie must have been lethal. Did anybody eat it?

i've just remembered, vera was also on that 3 parter thing about the titanic last april.

ZZZenAgain · 17/10/2012 12:53

yes,the halo thing means she was poisoned already when her friend saw her walking down the street so maybe she tasted it before cooking it? Not the dough surely. Or she nibbled a bit of the crust when it was done. Dunno if that would be enough poison. The scrubbing her nails thing, makes you think she is panicky about the poison but then if so, after cleaning her hands, why would she eat it? IF she knew she had eaten a poisoned pie, she'd try to vomit rather than scrub her hands.

Good point though, it's true if she didn't eat it, who did? Maybe a cat got at it? I think they cannoit solve it now , so Bates will die in prison and they can wrap it up

ZZZenAgain · 17/10/2012 12:54

So Vera is Irish at well? I'm going to have another look at the last episode and investigate Bate's accent

Chubfuddler · 17/10/2012 13:03

I reckon she poisoned the pie to try to poison him (hence manic scrubbing of nails) but that the poison that killed her was ingested in some other way - hence halo effect. I'm pretty sure that's phosphorous and not arsenic. The pie had arsenic in it. Basically I reckon sir Richard had her killed and he's behind bates woes inside.

MaryZed · 17/10/2012 13:13

This entire pie thing has gone completely over my head Confused. I must also switch off at the jail scenes.

The sad thing is that I barely remember back as far as the episode where the sodding pie was baked Hmm. Is this a period drama or a (rather poor) whodunnit? It's not meant to tax my poor sad old brain on a Sunday night.

ppeatfruit · 17/10/2012 13:16

Oh God the whole bleedin Bates thing is sooo effing boring I'll poison myself if I hear or see it again. I like D.A. except this plot Grin

squoosh · 17/10/2012 13:17

I'll happily eat a cyandide soaked pie if I have to see Bates and Anna's wan little faces discussing the matter ever again!

ZZZenAgain · 17/10/2012 13:30

which Agatha Christie was it where this woman gets poisoned and they see a greenish halo around her head? So that was phosphorus, was it?

I'm liking all this yearning for poisoned pies

Chubfuddler · 17/10/2012 13:35

Ooh we discussed on the last Downton thread. Was it after the funeral? I can't remember.

ZZZenAgain · 17/10/2012 13:39

ok I googled it. It is Emily Arundell in Dumb Witness and it was" phosphorus administered in her liver pills that killed her. The reason why haze appeared from her mouth was that her breath was phosphorescent. " (according to Wiki) so Vera was bopped off whilst trying to commit murder.

ZZZenAgain · 17/10/2012 13:41

which would mean Bates could still have killed her even if he is cleared of the arsenic pie episode. So this could drag on a lot longer
