It something to do with the others being married I think - have no idea why though, presumable just 'not the done thing' for a spinster in those days Confused?

tribpot · 16/10/2012 23:42

Only married ladies get to have breakfast in bed, spinsters have to go to the table. God knows why - married ladies excessively fatigued from all-night shagging with their dough-based spouses? (and the exceedingly lovely if slightly controlling Pickle).

JustSpidero · 16/10/2012 23:43

married ladies excessively fatigued from all-night shagging

I did wonder if that was the logic behind it the other night Grin!

squoosh · 16/10/2012 23:44

Single ladies had to breakfast downstairs. No idea what the actual reasoning was. Maybe because the married ladies were too shagged out, can't imagine that's Mary's problem though.

Mollydoggerson · 16/10/2012 23:49

LOL, thanks [smike]

Mollydoggerson · 16/10/2012 23:50
Smile

Frey riding must equal dry humping. But it's usually only done by dogs here in old men's pubs Grin

Davros · 17/10/2012 07:48

dry humping!

Davros · 17/10/2012 07:49

Or even riding

JennaLemon · 17/10/2012 07:54

did the married ladies' husbands have breakfast in bed with them!? i don't think so because matthew was there when he Edith was at the table with only the men.

Fiderer · 17/10/2012 07:55

Molly I like [smike] - it sounds like that smile you have to fake when someone says/does something unfunny but you can't risk being fired or arrested if you show what you really think.

So: fake smile = smike?

anonacfr I wasn't rooting for Bates, for the reasons you say. I don't know whether her killed his wife but he was abusive and physically aggressive to her. yuck. Gave me the shivers.

MarthasHarbour · 17/10/2012 08:27

I am a married lady but I dont get breakfast in bed Angry

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/10/2012 08:32

The men have their breakfast downstairs, thus permitting the plot device whereby Lord G gets absorbed in his mail and totally ignores anything remotely interesting that is happening to Edith.

AgathaFusty · 17/10/2012 09:47

I've been reading this thread but not posting. Now though, I really need to ask something. With this dry riding business, does the lad end up having to walk home with sticky boxers at the end of the night, or do you stop before that point? It sounds like a thoroughly messy affair to me.

MaryZed · 17/10/2012 09:58

Not the girl's problem Agatha Grin. He could stop whenever he liked.

AgathaFusty · 17/10/2012 10:01
Grin
ZZZenAgain · 17/10/2012 10:55

I think it is more likely the so-called friend (what-was-her-name-now?) dropped in on Vera and gave her a hand with the pastry making. I cannot see Vera putting poison in pastry in order to eat it herself . Why bother baking? Just throw it in some whisky and knock it back or even tea for that matter. If you are going to kill yourself, why go to the fuss of baking a pie? Vestiges in the glass would incriminate as much as pie left-overs. Or even: the unpleasant friend put poison in the pastry to kill Bates because Vera was so frightened of him and she thought she'd do her a favour by bumping him off but she forgot to tell Vera...

I didn't pick up at all on Bates being Irish. How do you all know he is supposed to be Irish?

ErikNorseman · 17/10/2012 11:21

Umm because he has an Irish accent? Grin

OP posts:
MarthasHarbour · 17/10/2012 11:28

And Vera was in 'The Commitments' as a foxy backing singer! Grin

squoosh · 17/10/2012 11:30

Yep, she's a professional singer as well as actress.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/10/2012 11:36

So's Cora, they really ought to get her singing sometime. Although it might be too rock n roll for Downton.

ZZZenAgain · 17/10/2012 11:38

I thought you all meant his accent in real life Erik. I didn't pick up on his Irish accent in the series at all.

(Must polish up my knowledge of accents)

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed · 17/10/2012 11:47

Doesn't sound Irish to me.

squoosh · 17/10/2012 11:48

He definitely has an Irish accent.
