I've gone off Aiden a bit now. I think he is too sneery . It won't stop me going to his place though.
Simon went the distance for his rosehips though, climbing mountains. Bloody hell.
Agree that Johnny shouldn't have bothered going back. What a nob he looked.
Who will win tonight? I saw a bit of the judging, Oliver (I think) sneered and said he didn't know what he was eating.

lilibet · 11/05/2012 08:48

And when he said that he was eating Aiden's fish course that got 10 from Marcus. I know this because we rewound and freeze framed to look. [sad geek emoticon]

ripsishere · 11/05/2012 09:21

Ah. Looking forward to tonight. I'll have to watch it when I get home though. It's race night at DDs school and we've got our tickets Grin

I do think that the brief this year is pushing towards style rather than content - there's a lot of criticism and Hmm when someone is doing a dish that is intended to make delicious food from lovely ingredients without marinating it in liquid helium or cooking it on the dark side of the sun.

And I was very Hmm about the antique veg too - those storage techniques were born of neccessity, and weren't a way to make the food taste better - it was just gimmickery as far as I could see.

ripsishere · 11/05/2012 12:45

You are of course right evil. Wouldn't you check that your turnips were firm before packing them in sawdust.
I also thought the man last week was really gimmicky with his shotgun cartrdige platform, horse platform for plate and foil cornet holder. The latter was very pretty though.

Changethatbulb · 11/05/2012 17:45

If I hear the words "how is this groundbreaking/pushing the boundaries?" one more time... Angry

ripsishere · 11/05/2012 17:56

Or some of the elements didn't work/did work/need tweeking................

Raahh · 11/05/2012 19:06

hmmm. I wish they would stop messing with the time!!

Changethatbulb · 11/05/2012 19:13

Bloomin' heck, is it on already Raahh? Hope my series link is working...

Raahh · 11/05/2012 19:28

Oh, poor Aiden.

It's the 3rd time he has lost nowSad

MaryBS · 11/05/2012 19:47

It was certainly very close, the closest I've seen

DukeHumfrey · 11/05/2012 21:49

Aiden would have walked some of the other regions (North East, anyone?).

Maybe he should have moved!

MousyMouse · 12/05/2012 08:16

I would have happily eaten any of their food. gutted for aiden...

ripsishere · 12/05/2012 08:24

Poor Aiden. Is there a cap on the number of times they can compete? This is Aiden's third year. Can he go back next year or is that it?
Agree that he would have been a shoo in in other regions. NE especially.
I was puzzled, I had been drinking when I watched it, but I didn't see the 'can't recognise this' comment.

Raahh · 12/05/2012 10:10

I know it's probably good publicity, but I wouldn't want to do it again if I was Aiden. It was very close- and for the first time, most of the food in the final was stuff you would want to eat, not ridiculously fancy for the sake of it(cuckoo powder asideGrin)

I doubt Johnny will be invited backGrin

Raahh · 14/05/2012 19:46

Wow- I'm not keen on Phil, he's very full of himself.

And soreen malt loaf Grin

DukeHumfrey · 14/05/2012 20:22

No, I hoped Phil would go crashing out in humiliation. Still - there are 3 more courses...!

OhdearNigel · 15/05/2012 00:12

Philip Howard is an amazing chef and his restaurant (the Square) is one of the longest holders of 2*s in London. He is entitled to be a bit full of himself.

They have got some real heavyweights this year - I really hope my ex goes in for it next year

OhdearNigel · 15/05/2012 00:14

In fact he could replace Johnny Mountain :)

juneybean · 15/05/2012 00:19

I only really watch if I'm at work, the little ones go to bed at 7pm so its the perfect time for me, I was watching last week and someone walked out, what happened there?

ripsishere · 15/05/2012 08:53

I really like drummer man - I am so shallow I judge on looks and attitude rather than food.
Juney - Johnnie Mountain walked out last week because he was scored really low in his starter then was only given a two for his fish dish. It didn't have any fish in it.

juneybean · 15/05/2012 12:27

Hmm oh dear throwing a tantrum then!

ripsishere · 16/05/2012 10:58

Yep, threw all his toys out because he didn't understand the concept of a fish course containing actual proper fish.
Last nights epidode was a bit although I did get to see Wormwood scrubs.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/05/2012 12:06

Phil is very full of himself, I agree. But I somehow like him, despite this.

I can't remember which one it was, but one of them had a starter that was tiny, on a smear of something - but in a huuuuge blue bowl. I would be very Shock and a bit pissed off if a huge bowl like that arrived in front of me, and had so little in it. It looked ridiculous - and made the small starter look even smaller!
