A mother is still breastfeeding her 8 yr old daughter!

Will try and watch it tho I think it might make me feel ill.

There is also a woman who tandem feeds her 4 yr old twins!

Mud · 28/01/2006 16:21

if 4 is ok and 8 isn't where does the cut-off point come and why?

Mud · 28/01/2006 16:21

I think it is refreshing to be in a place, albeit virtually, where there is a pro-camp. In RL I am the only person I know still feeding at ds's age and he is only 15mo. Despite all the evidence that he is better off being b/f, I live in a world that raises its eyebrows at me and thinks I am making a slightly "odd" choice. But hey, then again, I don't eat meat either, so I am used to it!!!!

Mud · 28/01/2006 16:22

oh thank fuck someone else to get slammed

I think it will be sensationalit - judging from the trailer where they showed several women b-feeding with their boobs out - you know - undo the shirt form the top business. No-one I know breast feeds like that. You simply don't see boobs when people breast feed and if the program makes out you do it will piss me right off. (having said that I did once go for a coffee with a Norweigan friend after she had just had her first and she took her shirt off! but hey, the cafe was literally empty - not even any serving staff cos we were in the downstairs bit)

This is a country where people find it normal to hit children. Breastfeeding a child on the other hand is sick and weird and will surely cause psychological issues.

I think it's a shame the programme is aired because it will just reinforce peoples stereotypes. They will not pick up anything about the benefits of bf, but rather look at the massive child at her mother's breast and think "I am not doing that". I wonder if programme is sponsored by a formuale company and I think the women who is bf her 10 year-old is a fool to do it on tv and is doing a diservice to bf in this country.

I bf my 17 month-old and I do it whenever and wherever I like, but luckily I have got thick skin.

Blandmum · 28/01/2006 16:23

If you look at the statistics it would seem that some time around the age of 4 children are weaned. There will always be 'normal' children who lie outside the average.....just like some kids walk at 10 months and some don't walk until 18 months and still be 'normal'.

There is a continum, but at age 8 a child is twich the average age....this would be considered abormal within most if not all cultures.

BTW, I don't see Hercules being "smug". That is a term often used to attack people who are doing something that is right but others don't like them for it. See also "ex-smokers".

Interesting question. I guess for me, four is okay partly because that's what felt right and ds had various health problems and I wanted to give him the best chance. There was no reason to stop him before then.

After 4 years I'd had enough and felt that there was no more benefit to him anyway.

For me 8 would be wrong as I see no point, emotionally or physically and the child is being more aware sexually and would worry about the child socially amongst it's peers.

For me, 10 is wrong for the same reasons which is why I wish they'd do a show on bf a child around the one year range so that people could realise that it's not sick or being a freak to bf a child.

Mud · 28/01/2006 16:25

that's a smug commetn beansprout

Blandmum · 28/01/2006 16:26

And I'll post the statistic again. They world wide average age of weaning is 4.2! How can rthis be abnormal if this is the average????

It is like saying 'a woman of 5 foot five is a giant, because I am only 5 foot tall', when 5 5 is the average!

oh please mud, stop insulting me. At least cod says she thinks it's wrong because it's unecessary.

Blandmum · 28/01/2006 16:27

why?

beansprout · 28/01/2006 16:27

Cod, even by your standards, you are not making any sense!

hercules · 28/01/2006 16:28

No one is listening to the world average which makes rl actually like the so called pro camp and those against it more like the minority.

hercules · 28/01/2006 16:28

Shit, my shoe size is 7 so I must be a freak!
