A mother is still breastfeeding her 8 yr old daughter!

Will try and watch it tho I think it might make me feel ill.

There is also a woman who tandem feeds her 4 yr old twins!

I breastfed my son until he was over 3.5. I don't think I'm a freak, it just seemed natural at the time. He had a lot of problems (which turned out to be autism and SLD)and it was hard enough to see him like that without worrying about weaning him when it was unnecessary. BF was the only way to calm him when he was hysterical and the only way for me to get any sleep (also trying to run a pub at the time). Ds has never in his life taken milk of any sort (including milkshake) out of a bottle, cup or carton despite us trying everything we could think of. What else was I supposed to do? I admit that it was partly for my benefit as it seemed the only thing I could do for him and made me feel better.

I certainly don't feel there was anything wrong with it at all and would have carried on if I thought he needed it. If I had another child whether NT or not I think I would do the same. Two friends of mine with (NT) children the same age fed theirs until they were 3 and 5. It's really not THAT unusual is it?

Mind you, 8yo? No thanks!

mrspitt are you serious??

FrannyandZooey · 28/01/2006 21:05

I have been thinking about the "but they don't need it" argument. Should we remove everything from a child's life that is pleasant, comforting and useful, but not absolutely necessary? I have this vivid image of a dystopian future where children are not cuddled or played with because "it makes them clingy" and "they don't need it".

cuddle and play are far removed form breastfeeding once the nutritional needs are met elsewhere. ba analogy

bf a toddler is virtually indistinguishable from a cuddle
with added calcium

Mud · 28/01/2006 21:11

a cuddle is a cudle
a breastfeed is a meal
bals to you big organ woman

FrannyandZooey · 28/01/2006 21:14

Hey HC want to play "Who on this thread was WTE?"

harpsichordenvy · 28/01/2006 21:17

er, no mud you are betraying your ignorance of perhaps your lack of experience if your think that bf toddlers are there for a meal
OK - how about this - bf a toddler is like a cuddle and a cake. but with less sugar??
Franny - too easy

beansprout · 28/01/2006 21:18

What does WTE mean?

harpsichordenvy · 28/01/2006 21:19

weaned too early

Mud · 29/01/2006 08:41

harpsichord i have more thna 3 years experiemnce, althougjn across 3 children, i am not ignorant of breastfeedng. i am merely revulsed by breastfeding a child

Filyjonk · 29/01/2006 09:05

"bf a toddler is virtually indistinguishable from a cuddle
with added calcium"

ooh, that a good quote, I like that!

Zauberfee · 30/01/2006 22:46

When is that programme on???

hunkermunker · 30/01/2006 23:37

Women don't start off bfeeding toddlers though - they start off bfeeding newborns, then don't stop until the child wants to.

Well, in an ideal world that's what happens.

How about I call all of you who didn't let this happen abusive and sick?

Nice, eh.

Spidermama · 30/01/2006 23:43

Given that the international average age for a child to stop breastfeeding is SEVEN, I think channel 4 should make a programme called, 'Curtailed Breastfeeding: A Western Phenomenon' all about people who wean abruptly at 6 months.
