SeaShells - brilliant new especially the one with Troels.

Just one question re last night how did she fall and hurt her eye - I looked away and missed it. I loved it but have to agree why didn't they just get a nanny. I was also surprised she was willing to let him have other woman. How could she do that to Bent! Also how could she get rid of Sanne. But I suppose it was probably very realistic in terms of what would happen if you became PM.

Carabos - I also wondered if Katrine was pregnant (in rl) as her hair did go dark and she did look a bit bigger.

helpyourself · 06/02/2012 10:12

Shock that it's finished- we're a few episodes behind as we i-player it.

I think the lack of housekeeping/ childcare support is quite typical- the previous PM was pictured painting his own fence.

Made we Sad for feminism in general though. All it seemed to have brought was the right of the husband's student to perve at him in the good bye speech and for him to refuse to do anything domestic; when he said he wouldn't support her anymore, (I'd love to see the original Danish and how it was translated) I assumed he meant turning up at official functions, etc.

Re her falling and hurting her eye- she lurched away when he reached out to her after saying he'd slept with another woman.

vjg13 · 06/02/2012 11:01

I thought the student's speech was really creepy and uncomfortable, bad enough if he'd been single but totally inappropriate in front of the rest of the family.

javo · 06/02/2012 11:27

vjg13 - I thought that too - Frejq mentionrd Philip's arse too many times - just cringeworthy.

Very sad this has ended- was aghast that Birgitte sacked Bent because Labour were doing well in the polls. At the start of the series the reason she wouldn't come to an agreement with Hesselboe was that having the Finance ministry and controlling finance was top on the Moderates list!

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 06/02/2012 14:14

I think the inappropriate speech was meant to add fuel to Birgitte's suspicions about Phillip and the student. It (amongst other things) served to show up the rapidly widening cracks in their marriage.

Oooh, it was brilliant. Missing it already. Is Katrine going to turn out to be Birgitte's 'top-notch' new secretary? Will they REALLY get a divorce? Will we still get to see the stuff going on at TV1 if Katrine has resigned? And why did Phillip behave like such a tosser in the end?

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 06/02/2012 14:20

I can't see Katrine as sectretary, maybe as Birgitte's 'spin doctor'

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 06/02/2012 16:20

Yes, I agree she's a bit good to be a secretary. I wonder though ? she did a secret smile thingy when Kasper asked her what she was going to do now she'd left TV1, and Birgitte's colleague said her new secretary was 'top-notch' and I thought 'It's her'! Also, isn't Kasper staying on as her spin doctor?

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 06/02/2012 16:43

I don't think katrine would join "the system"...she is not cynical enough to have kasper's role, she said herself she is a naive idealist. What about a role like Hanne Holm, being an investigative reporter, or I would not be surprised if she is back with tv1 as an ongoing love hate relationship!

I miss it Grin

diddl · 06/02/2012 19:35

I really enjoyed it, but lost a lot of sympathy her tbh.

And then when she asked him to play happy families-I thought that that would spell the end.

And if the planes(?) really had been decided on so long ago it was a ridiculous thing that she asked of him imo.

But for 2 intelligent people not to be able to think of a nanny/au pair whatever-a bit unrealistic?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 07/02/2012 09:57

I agree, diddl, a nanny or some sort of help would have solved a lot of the practical problems at least. Although his objections towards the end were not so much about practical arrangements but more about her not really being there even when she was physically there, which I guess is harder to solve.

I thought her asking him if they could come to some arrangement was a fairly bleak, but quite believable, indication of what that sort of pressured job can do to even very good people.

What did you mean by 'the planes'?

diddl · 07/02/2012 09:59

Im sure it wasn´t planes.

He had to give up his job due to what the Ministry of Defence were about to buy-even though it had been decided on a long time ago.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 07/02/2012 10:10

Oh yes, sorry, I'd forgotten but it was planes ? fighter planes, wasn't it, bought by the Defence department.

It's true that the purchase of the fighters happened long before he was offered the job, but the job offer at an already sensitive time for the government ? the press were already on their case and just waiting for the government to make a wrong move, and that would have done the job, even though there clearly was no corruption involved. If anything, I think he was a bit unreasonable not to try to understand her and the government's position. Life cannot be 'normal' if you're living in the glare of the media like that; things that would normally be inconsequential can have devastating consequences.

aloiseb · 07/02/2012 18:52

Isn't Inspector Montalbon coming next to the Saturday slot? He's lovely! saw it at Christmas (? or was that just when I finally managed to catch up with my Sky+ box?)

Agree with everything everyone's said about nannies....could have saved the day. Maybe they just don't have a culture of having nannies in Denmark ..........But also it's typical that people who can solve massive country-breaking crises can't solve the ones on their own hearths.

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 07/02/2012 20:09

It doesn't really reflect Scandinavian childcare etc-it's normally heavily subsidised to facilitate both parents working...one would think the PM would also be able to do this!!

So what Scandinavian delights are next? Anyone know when the bridge is starting?
Lilyhammer is loved in Norway, it's got a guy from the sopranos in it...I'm hoping it translates as well as the others have, as I suspect it will have a lt of "in jokes" (the name being the first-it's how the Olympic committee pronounced Lillehammer when announcing they had won the winter Olympics in 1994...as I say, one or two in jokes Grin )

CarelessWispa · 11/02/2012 09:01

I'm in mourning too. Can't believe that Philip would do that. And I have to admit that even though he's a good looking chap, I was never keen on his vest-in-bed attire. Would have been a passion killer for me!

Look what I found on Amazon.

hackmum · 11/02/2012 11:47

Am joining this thread a bit late as have been behind everyone else - only saw the final episode last night.

For the past weeks my DP and I have been saying to each other, "Why don't they just get a nanny and a housekeeper?" so it's funny to log on and find out that's what everyone else is saying as well. Just amazing that they don't even have an official residence, just an ordinary house and no servants. How could two people maintain busy jobs like that with no domestic help?

I have loved this series, though not quite as much as The Killing. I thought we saw slightly two many shots of Katrine in her underwear. I loved the character of Kaspar, who has such hidden depths.

Utterly shocked when Brigitte sacked Bent. He was her ally and her true friend. She won't have many of those left before too long. Pernille is more than ready to stab her in the back.

hackmum · 11/02/2012 12:11

Other thoughts: surely Katrine can't be pregnant? I remember being really shocked in the episode where she had the abortion. That never happens in tv series - it's setting up a story arc and then demolishing it. But I suppose it reveals something about her inner steel. It was after all the child of her dead lover - so not an easy thing to do to get rid of it.

I also went off Philippe. She is prime minister, after all - what does he expect? If the roles were reversed, she'd just have to suck it up.

Agree it was disconcerting seeing Theis Birk Larsen as defence minister, not to mention Strange from K2 as Philippe. But also part of the pleasure of the series. The actor who played Meyer in K1 was very good - I kept forgetting he was Meyer, iyswim.

CarelessWispa · 11/02/2012 12:35

Yes, I agree Hackmum. Kept expecting Theis to be there in his red jacket, humping boxes.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 11/02/2012 13:05

hackmum, yy, I agree about the Katrine-in-her-underwear shots. A bit at odds with the otherwise pretty enlightened tone of the show.

Re: Bent. I think the point was to illustrate what he himself (ironically) told her when she became PM: 'You can't have any friends here. You have to be able to get rid of anybody.' Wise words, and they came true ? unfortunately they came true for him.

It does leave her very isolated, but then again I think one of the main messages of this show is that that's the price you pay for power.

Can't wait for the next one!

DaisySteiner · 11/02/2012 22:55

Did anyone watch Borgen's replacement, Inspector Montalbano? Maybe I'm pre-menstrual, but I blubbed like a baby at the end Blush

joanofarchitrave · 11/02/2012 23:28

I thought the Katrine in her underwear bit was OK in the storyline tbh - her boyfriend was looking at her and feeling like a bit of action. (He wasn't the only one, she has seriously sexy legs). Anyway, what about him? Whenever he appeared on screen he was either putting a shirt on (slowly) or taking it off (quickly) - it was equal opps perving which IMO is fine.

wildstrawberryplace · 13/02/2012 11:06

Guess what my Danish friend sent me which arrived this morning?

PerryCombover · 13/02/2012 11:14

They get a divorce. Sobs

KikkiK · 13/02/2012 11:19

wildstrawberryplace, do you have series 2?! Envy I looked on Amazon but it was so expensive. Enjoy!
