Posted on the X Factor thread, but it is so lovely, it deserves a thread of it's own.

And in case you are wondering who the singer is, and how Morrissey could have agreed to such a thing-

article here

Didn't do it for me either! Marketing madness. Wonder if it will work. I've still got a present bought last year, unopened. From JL.

CointreauVersial · 13/11/2011 21:22

Awww....I had a lump in my throat, but mainly because of the song, whcih has always made me cry. Even with some random bird singing it.

Film references? Are you lot having a laugh? You've been playing those Beatles records backwards again looking for secret messages, haven't you.

fruitstick · 13/11/2011 21:43

I bloody hate John Lewis for infiltrating my head and knowing EXACTLY what things I will like, from music to soft furnishings.

I know I'm being exploited but there is nothing I can do about it Angry. As marketing goes, it's genius. They certainly know there market.

Film refs, yes Great Escape, Jurassic Park. Is the Omen the spinning chair scene? Bridget Jones, sixth sense, Seven. And the swing scene really rings a bell. Confused

fifitot · 13/11/2011 21:47

Which is the Bridget Jones one? The 6th Sense?

fruitstick · 13/11/2011 21:54

The Bridget Jones one is when he comes out from the duvet. Sixth sense when he pulls the covers right up to his face.

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 13/11/2011 21:58

Isn't the spinning chair Wall Street?

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 13/11/2011 21:59

No no no forget that - It's BIG, with Tom Hanks, isn't it?

Thornelius · 13/11/2011 22:05

I loved the advert, so far the best xmas one I've seen this year! :-)

giraffesCantDookForApples · 13/11/2011 22:13

awww

goodtimesarecoming · 13/11/2011 22:13

Isn't it also the snowman where he eats his dinner really quick and rushes to bed?

icapturethecastle · 13/11/2011 22:18

Just seen it -knew straight away it was the John Lewis advert. Love that song in pretty in pink with Ducky (is that too random). Was such a huge Smiths fan - got my t-shirt saved for DD and DS for when they are older.

RedBlanket · 13/11/2011 22:18

Morrissey and johnny, how could you? I could just about live with it in Ferris Bueller, but John Lewis. Noooooooooooo.

And its a crap advert.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 13/11/2011 22:22

I clearly do not watch nearly enough films. I have no idea what any of you are talking about!

AttilaTheMeerkat · 14/11/2011 07:38

What a totally awful advert; what on earth was the ad agency thinking when they put that painful pile of old tosh together?.

KeepInMindItsAlmostChristmas · 14/11/2011 08:03

Sniff...... i like it

Raahh · 14/11/2011 08:08

This thread is getting funnier- I love how people are trying to fit any film reference EVER into a 90 second ad!Grin

I love it- but then, I save my 'depressed by this advert' stance for companies such as Quikquid and wonga- people who are REALLY out to fleece vulnerable customers!Grin

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 14/11/2011 08:48

Raahh- Brighthouse springs to mind!

Merrylegs · 14/11/2011 08:51

Is v bleak this ad.

I am so worried for that little boy. He has an unhealthy desire to please his parents who seem to have been ignoring him for the best part of a year (or wetly looking at him through a window while he swings. Play with him fgs! Interact with the poor kid!).

Is heartbreaking when he holds up his shabby offering at the end. As if that'll make them notice you. As if.

Sparklingbrook · 14/11/2011 08:54

That's why there's a severed head in the box Merrylegs Grin That'll show them!

Raahh · 14/11/2011 09:04

Sparklingbrook- agreed, BrighthouseAngry

I think it is only a month that they are ignoring him, Merrylegs, maybe outside of Advent, he is less annoying?Grin

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 14/11/2011 09:04

I think how this ad has been perceived on here is an insight into personalities.

The film refs I saw were Home Alone, The Snowman, Polar Express, Jurassic park etc family films, happy endings etc

So far on the other thread there's been The Omen, The Shining, Sixth Sense, Seven.....bloody hell there's a load of maudlin souls around on mumsnet this weekend! Grin

Merrylegs · 14/11/2011 09:46

But this kid has been nothing but silent and good for - well at least a month.

Eats his dinner. Goes to bed on time. Entertains himself.

And yet the first time he jiffles his leg, his dad - who can't even be bothered to heave his
fat head away from the paper - admonishes him.

And check out the parents faces on Christmas morning.

I mean, the one time you can guarantee a child is going to come into your room and wake you up is Xmas day, right?

And yet their look of total incomprehension - 'Whoa! There's a kid in here?! WTF! Where did it come from? Hey, who let this kid in!?'

So either that's the sister's head in the box, or she has learnt to be a really really good little girl who must never ever let mummy and daddy know she lives in the house too. Even on Christmas Day.

issynoko · 14/11/2011 10:28

What do you expect with a Morrissey song? A happy family? That kid is probably called Hector.

Georgimama · 14/11/2011 11:34

I was taken in. I was thinking all the way through "this is just a middle class version of that ghastly Littlewoods ad, the avaricious brat can't wait to get his hands on his presents" so when he dived out of bed, straight past his own gifts to give his mum and dad theirs I did go "aw".

My son also had to be woken on Christmas morning. He slept 7-7 and he virtually never does.

MyMelody · 14/11/2011 12:29

"I hate it! Its depressing and feels like its going to be some sort of nspcc advert or something - can't see anything 'nice' about it - there a huge undercurrent of tension and melancholy."

totally agree - its creepy
