Posted on the X Factor thread, but it is so lovely, it deserves a thread of it's own.

And in case you are wondering who the singer is, and how Morrissey could have agreed to such a thing-

article here

Can you buy a severed head at John Lewis even?

Raahh · 11/11/2011 16:32

Some people are never happyGrin

As with the Littlewoods advert, no-one is going to force anyone to watch itWink

It probably is about money for Mozzer, but I doubt he would have allowed the cover to go ahead if he thought it was shit enough to ruin his reputation. (The majority watching won't even know it is a Smiths cover, anyway).

I sold him a copy of 'Never mind the Bollocks' once, on cassette. He was very nice.

"Can you buy a severed head at John Lewis even?"
Only on the butchers counter at Waitrose.

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2011 16:35

Ooh good I fancied a change from turkey and all the trimmings Raahh Grin

Raahh · 11/11/2011 16:36

i bought a Barbie styling head from JL- it does look quite sinister, actually

Take it back. Don't like the ad. That girl's voice is annoying and neuters the song.

And the lyrics don't fit - 'seems the life I've had/would make a good man turn bad' about a little boy?

But JL didn't let unsuitable lyrics stop them with the Always A Woman To Me ad.

limitedperiodonly · 11/11/2011 16:40

snigger at the butcher's counter in Waitrose.

redlac · 11/11/2011 16:41

The shining reference is where is bouncing the ball off the wall. se7en is the severed head in the box and the Omen might be the bit on the swing but I'm not sure.

I wonder if ist the head of the dog that was left out in the cold in last years advert?

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2011 16:45

The whole ad has a seventies feel and the lighting makes everything look a bit bleak IMHO.

limitedperiodonly · 11/11/2011 16:46

Thanks.

I wasn't troubled by the dog left out in the cold. That probably makes me a bad person.

redlac · 11/11/2011 16:48

The dog left out in the cold made me cry more than the awful cover version in this one - mind you I don't think you can improve on perfection so think that Smoths song shouldn't be allowed

Raahh · 11/11/2011 16:49

I didn't get the hoo-haa about the dog, really. But some people will get offended by anything, i have found.

Quite a nice advert, but am getting a little fed up of these 'girl with whiney/haunting voice does version of well-known song with just a piano' stuff. It's everywhere.

Love the original of that song.

Raahh · 11/11/2011 16:51

The same ad got complaints at the bit where you see the parents putting stuff in the loft. Hmm

Ruined the santa myth for all the adults children watching. Bet most kids didn't even watch the advert!

limitedperiodonly - what other songs do I always think of as lovely nice happy songs but are actually about heroin? I'm almost as flabbergasted as I was when I realised that that song I always warbled along to was about a 'raspberry beret' of all things.

Raahh · 11/11/2011 16:53

I agree about the use of the breathy singer- it's the 3rd year in a row they have. The year before, they used their own choir, which was actually very good.

OP posts:
SomekindofSpanish · 11/11/2011 16:57

Grin. The Twinings ad is just as bad.

DilysPrice · 11/11/2011 16:58

Golden Brown is normally cited as a Great Song What Is Actually About Smack. Night in White Satin OTOH is about getting pissed.

Raahh · 11/11/2011 17:00

I loved the original version of 'wherever you may go'- the cover and the original have done quite well off the back of the ad, though (and being murdered by Sophie Habeeeeebeeees on X FactorGrin) Actually, that second bit may not have helped...

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 11/11/2011 17:06

Loads on Google.

The one I really like is James Taylor's Fire and Rain - I didn't connect it - I thought it was a hippy song about the end of a love affair.

And the Las (sp)There She Goes is too apparently.

Someone droned on at me that Zoom by Fat Larry's band was about heroin too. I wasn't convinced. I think his love for smack was clouding his judgement and not just about song lyrics.

But then everything's supposed to be about drugs or being gay. Why can't we just have innocent songs like My Ding A Ling? Grin

Raahh · 11/11/2011 17:13

pmsl @'my ding a ling'

Bouncing the ball off the wall is the Great Escape, surely?

Cant see how that would have cost £5m though Hmm It's an OK ad, cute but nothing special.

SoupDragon · 11/11/2011 17:16

The boy is utterly fabulous in it though.

Raahh · 11/11/2011 17:22

He is lovely
