Posted on the X Factor thread, but it is so lovely, it deserves a thread of it's own.

And in case you are wondering who the singer is, and how Morrissey could have agreed to such a thing-

article here

All the way through I just thought 'rude boy' which I know is the intention but just not very season of good will - ish

NotnOtter · 14/11/2011 12:51

Merrylegs - good thinking re the sisters head in the box. Maybe it's a kind of - 'we need to talk about Kevin' themed scenario? Wink

So pleased its not just me who is utterly unmoved by this advertisement.

My DP has cried on each of the 3 times he has watched it now. Maybe its because he knows I can't afford to buy him a present from John Lewis. Only from Primark!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 14/11/2011 15:57

What's in the box? A big clay cock that he made at school, clearly. Grin

"but am getting a little fed up of these 'girl with whiney/haunting voice does version of well-known song with just a piano' stuff."

I agree. When obviously it should have been the original recording, by a big girl with a whiny voice.

Sidge · 14/11/2011 16:29

I am discombobulated at the fact that I, usually such a weeper at mushy stuff that you could hire me out at weddings and funerals, am utterly unmoved by the advert.

RhondaRoo · 14/11/2011 18:06

totally unmoved here too, didn't get the alleged film references and don't like the song (have never heard it prior to the advert as not a fan of ol' Mozza-has-principles-until-JL-waves-big-wad-of-cash-under-his-nose)

I like the idea - but they could have made it a little less sinister....it is a CHRISTMAS advert after all! Come on JL - a few sleigh bells is all we're asking for!

Merrylegs · 14/11/2011 18:41

and, and... he is so disassociated from everything.

Shepherd in the school play? Boring.

Advent calender? Boring.

Play dress up with the little kid? Boring.

Meal times? Boring. Just going through the motions.

Some serious disaffection happening Right Under The Drippy Parents' Noses. (They are v drippy).

'see the luck I've had can make a good man turn bad' indeed.

I blame the parents.

hackmum · 14/11/2011 19:26

REshapewhiledamp: "When obviously it should have been the original recording, by a big girl with a whiny voice. "

Yes! Me too! At least half the joy I've had from this ad is watching all the Morrissey fans get all worked up about it.

noddyholder · 14/11/2011 19:31

I don't like it either. Totally unlikeable characters. And very predictable but not in a comforting xmassy way just a bit lazy. He is so so irritating running about in his dressing gown Sit down you spoiled little sod

redlac · 14/11/2011 19:34
Sparklingbrook · 14/11/2011 19:36

He doesn't even take his plate into the kitchen. Angry

VivaLeBeaver · 14/11/2011 19:40

I don't think that there are any intentional film references. People are reading too much into it.

The most unbelievable thing has got to be that its gone 8:00am when he wakes up on Xmas day. Any kid that age wakes up by 6:30 at the latest.

Raahh · 14/11/2011 20:19

VivaLeBeaver- actually a few of us have said we do have dcs that need waking up!Grin

It's great!

This thread is getting funnier- I love how people are trying to fit any film reference EVER into a 90 second ad!

I love it- but then, I save my 'depressed by this advert' stance for companies such as Quikquid and wonga- people who are REALLY out to fleece vulnerable customers!*

This is not just any thread Raahh,
This is a MN thread

[spoken a la m&s advert lady talking ]

MirandaGoshawk · 14/11/2011 21:42

No. It didn't work for me - I can't believe that the kid ignored the presents at the end of his bed.

I'd read in the paper about 'the best ad ever' and ad people blubbing in their offices and feel let down.

And how did he get hold of the present from John Lewis anyway? Buy it online with his parents' credit card?

(And I loathe the Smiths & didn't know the song anyway, & can't remember it even though I've seen the advert twice.)

serin · 14/11/2011 22:37

The boy is the spitting image of our youngest.

There is something not quite right about it though, it makes me want to cry rather than smile or feel festive.

kipperandtiger · 14/11/2011 23:13

The boy is cute but the rest of the ad is highly improbable and totally unbelievable. I don't see what his gift has to do with John Lewis, as a child would probably make a gift rather than have the means (or unsupervised opportunity) to buy it. Don't think much of the M&S one either. Yes, I am quite difficult to please!

My favourite Christmas ad is the Waitrose one where people are trying to get home for Christmas and are dreaming of different Christmas food items from pudding to turkey to mince pies. More realistic and not quite as consumerist.(That said, I quite like M&S and JL regardless).

nannynick · 14/11/2011 23:20

serin - your youngest isn't called Lewis is he?

Anyone know if the boy in the ad is called Lewis or Louis or indeed some other spelling. In the 'Making Of' - - they mention that the child's name is Lewis (or however it's spelt).

I went shopping today at JL and brought the wrapping paper!

coldwed · 14/11/2011 23:38

somebody wrote on youtube comment

No friends, gazes into space all the time, is a mute, and to top it all he's no interest in his pressies, just wants to give his parents one with his creepy little smile. It's a touching study of child mental disorder.

kipperandtiger · 15/11/2011 00:14

Youtube does attract some extreme comments!

hackmum · 15/11/2011 09:43

@VivaLaBeaver: "I don't think that there are any intentional film references. People are reading too much into it."

Pah. These are advertising people. Creatives love nothing better than putting film references into advertisements - remember those Stella Artois ads that were just a complete lift of Jean de Florette?

The more I watch the ad, the more I like it. Not only does it harness the Miserable One's whiny song for the purpose of selling stuff, thus removing his pretensions to artistic credibility, it also appears to subvert the traditional Christmas ad (buy lots of stuff for your kids! Now!) while actually shoving a whole load of J Lewis products in your face and making you want to buy them. If that's not clever, what is?

redlac · 15/11/2011 09:43
