Posted on the X Factor thread, but it is so lovely, it deserves a thread of it's own.

And in case you are wondering who the singer is, and how Morrissey could have agreed to such a thing-

article here

I love the ad, did anyone mention the Jurrasic Park bit?

But I agree with ahhyesiseeyouvepooedonyourfoot that the one with the women growing older, from baby to old lady, is fab. I prefer that one.

herecomesthsun · 13/11/2011 07:51

soooo they could do the second ad with the reveal for Xmas Day, with a Happy Xmas from JL? (but it would be too late to be inspired to get the pressies then)

thankgodformerlot · 13/11/2011 09:13
Grin
thankgodformerlot · 13/11/2011 09:15

Can see why they sort of set it in the 70s. kids nowadays would never do that!!

Clarabumps · 13/11/2011 09:45

I loved that advert- it was so cute! Bah Humbug to all yous that didnt like it. I love twee shite (i agree it was twee and shite) and I love that. [blows raspberry emoticon]

dementedma · 13/11/2011 10:13

Is the hand on knee reference to Rain Man, or am I just getting into this too deeply? Got The Great Escape one and the Jurassic Park one.

Dandare · 13/11/2011 10:40

I think the ball throwing is from Cool Hand Luke....

LaFilleSurLePont · 13/11/2011 10:42

It didn't do a thing for me, and I'm a wuss, currently a hormonal wuss. It played like an NSPCC advert for the first half, and where did his sister go? I think it'd have been sweeter if the gift was for her.

I can't see why it'd make anyone cry.

noblegiraffe · 13/11/2011 11:22

I felt sorry for the neglected sister.

But their house was lovely and it did make me want to buy their John Lewis lifestyle.

Jins · 13/11/2011 11:27

There's a Wicker Man reference for me.

Yes I find the ad that creepySad

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 13/11/2011 11:31

Stealth Penguin - the Bridget Jones ref is at 0:28 when he comes up from under the covers!

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2011 11:39

Thank you Jins. Creepy and depressing. Not like Christmas at all.

perceptionreality · 13/11/2011 11:47

I also found it depressing, I agree it's got unpleasant undertones.

Italiangreyhound · 13/11/2011 11:49

Jins where is the Wickerman reference, please? I find it hard to believe they meant all these references! I mean the Great escape (which also appears in Chicken Run) and the Jurassic park ones are fun ones maybe that fit the theme but Seven and other horror films, kind of wonder if those are accidental! has anyone found an article on the film references, please?

Thanks.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2011 11:50

It is like the NSPCC ad. I kept expecting something horrible to happen like in a horror film.

picnicbasketcase · 13/11/2011 11:55

No idea why it would make anyone cry, and I usually cry at bloody anything. My reaction was more just '...Oh, he's got them a gift, right.' A wholly inappropriate song choice too.

FrancesFarmer · 13/11/2011 12:02

I would hat if my DS were like that boy.

The poor thing - he puts himself through hell trying to please others.

FrancesFarmer · 13/11/2011 12:02

hatE

noblegiraffe · 13/11/2011 12:06

I had a tear in my eye but I've got a little boy just a bit younger than the one in the ad and I was thinking of him.

Jins · 13/11/2011 12:07

Oh it's when he's being watched by the little one in the costume. It's at about 22-24 seconds. Reminds me of the way the policeman is watched

confusedpixie · 13/11/2011 14:23

I love it! But did laugh at the end when I realised it was John Lewis and thoguht it was a bit random, but the advert is lovely and really well made :)

gettingalifenow · 13/11/2011 16:36

I loved it and will now have to watch it again and again to get all the film refs I missed while I was blubbing the first time

issynoko · 13/11/2011 16:52

What did he get them? That's what I want to know. And I bet he made it at school. Don't like to think of the poor kid trawling round John Lewis alone.

NotnOtter · 13/11/2011 20:27

blubbed like a good 'un

total lack of realism though

I suppose a lot of christmas is about fantasy - we could all dream of having a child like that

mumzy · 13/11/2011 20:35

I remember listening to that song when it first came out and I was a rebellious 15 year old, I can't believe I'm now JL's target audience. Where has all the years gone??? Sad
