just seen a trailer with the gorgeous Captain Jack and Gwen. No idea when it will be shown bit I'm so happyyyy. We really thought they'd killed it off with the last series.

Anyone know when it's coming??!!

The baby when she was shooting was sooooooo a doll - it was really obvious...

LunaMoth · 14/07/2011 22:17

I liked it but - the burnt out man reminded me of when they bought Captain Jack back from the brink last series - he was a burnt out head / torso...

Any one have any idea who the suicide bomber guy was or who had sent him? and the 'walker' couple?? Is the whole series this story?

Oh and i'd like that cottage please since they've left it Grin

moominthecorner · 14/07/2011 22:18

Grin vogon I thought exactly the same re shoes!

pinkteddy · 14/07/2011 23:00

It seemed like a big intro/warm up for the US audience. Will reserve judgement until next week's episode. The trailer at the end was ridiculously long though and contained many spoilers.

Ripeberry · 14/07/2011 23:30

That CIA guy said the first thing to annoy him was getting impalled and the next having to pay for the bridge! I feel like that sometimes, having to pay Grin

teejwood · 14/07/2011 23:59

ok - i actually enjoyed that - but i first enjoyed torchwood from ep 1 onwards because it WAS the trashiest thing i watched - my guilty secret - so what's disappointing here?
Children of Earth being such a thoughtful, considered piece of drama was a slight departure from the Torchwood norm, when you think about it, which was mostly aliens, action and shagging. hope gwen left those bits out of what she tells her dd..
i like the premise (have done since i heard about it). i have wanted to throttle bill pullman every scene he has had (which is kind of the point) and there are still those tongue in cheek elements that made it fun in the first place. i'll be tuning in next week. Grin

MrsOlaf · 15/07/2011 01:39

Oooh. I can't stand John Barrowman. Not in the trashy shows he does and not in the reality stuff you see. His grandma punched his teacher and he thought that was good. That isn't good.

I love Torchwood in Series One and Two. However I prefer the one episode stories. I think this story had too little happening for too much of the time. I am hoping that the American money doesn't take away from the quality of story. I don't think American versions of GB stories are good eg Shameless.

VforViennetta · 15/07/2011 02:19

I shall reserve my judgement until it starts properly, wasn't fussed on this episode. I did really love children of earth though, that was a quality bit of drama if ever I have seen one.

I'm not holding out much for that standard, but it has got to get better.

CQrrrneee · 15/07/2011 14:55

Too American. Since when has Gwen been an ass kicking Buffy type?

HarrietJones · 15/07/2011 17:21

She had to toughen up to defend her family? She was shown as toughish when taking on the daleks.

It was better than I expected. I'm not sure about a long story though as I prefer it like Dr Who having lots of short stories with a story arc over the series

Flossie69 · 15/07/2011 20:09

Just watched this, and thought it was brilliant!!!

Was concerned about the baby, though, hope she is ok.

Did anyone else the proof that Gwen has spent her time in the wilds of wales on Mumsnet?...........

Flossie69 · 15/07/2011 20:10

...........in the opening scenes, where she is feeding her daughter, she is an Antilop highchair!!!!!!! Grin

Its actually quite sad that I noticed that.....

Dumbledoresgirl · 15/07/2011 20:20

Agree about single episode stories with progression over a whole series are better than one long story all series (if that makes sense).

I also loved the line about having to pay for the bridge. Those of us who frequently cross it feel exactly the same way!

As for the rest, I enjoyed it but only because I love Captain Jack and it was so good to see him again. I missed the Welshness of the programme and I really didn't like Capt Jack not having a more commanding role, but I guess that might change as the series progresses.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 15/07/2011 22:24

Flossie, just watched it and I shrieked 'Antilop!!' at DH. Blush Gwen wasn't doing BLW though, was she? tut tut

Enjoyed it - bit reminiscent of Flashforward - lots of jokes. Not sure how I'm going to feel about most of it being set in America, though. I enjoyed the Welsh Tourist Board Gower bits!

PigfartsPigfartsHereICome · 15/07/2011 23:35

I preferred the 'enemy of the week' series one and two, though I am glad they kept some of the incidental music. Its just too different. Almost like a different program, same charactors but everything else is different. I do like that they had the same people to play Gwen's parents as in the wedding ep. I miss some of the Welsh humour!

Loved the 'Dr Owen Harper' bit, though if I remember the ep correctly didn't Tosh tell him he'd slowely.. dissolve in the radioactive waste? So I suppose he is still alive in this new series!

microserf · 16/07/2011 08:10

i really liked it. it has been americanised a bit but it was good fun.

seems to have a much bigger budget, helicopter chasing 4x4 down the beach?

i'm still traumatised by "children of earth", i could never watch that again. it was well done, but gave me nightmares. then, i did spend my childhood watching dr who from behind the couch.

CQrrrneee · 16/07/2011 08:13

do doctors in America really strut around hospitals wearing stilettos and tight dresses?

GwenCooper · 16/07/2011 09:34

Not quite as good as I hoped, but I will watch next week. The budget appears to have gone through the roof.

fedupofnamechanging · 16/07/2011 10:21

Sometimes having less money is a good thing, as they then have to maintain high standards with the writing, because they can't rely on flashy stunts.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/07/2011 12:16

Okaaayyyyyy... finally seen it, and will hold judgement I think, and see how it goes. It did feel like a different programme and FGS I had to wait 20 mins for Jack to show up!

It will be interesting...

I am a bit Hmm and dissapointed about it all.

How can amendments to USA rules/policy just affect the UK? How can they just expatriate on I assume a single phone call a man (who doesn't exist and has no real paperwork) and a Welsh woman with no USA history??

The beach/helicopter/rocket launcher chase. The blown up live corpse, complete rip off from the last series. Captain Jacks lack of acting when he was hurt. Has he had plastic surgery? He looks plastic. I suppose the he can't be killed thing gets a bit old so it is a nice twist.

Will watch and see how it goes.

Wamster · 16/07/2011 16:51

I'm going to reserve judgement until next episode. Love John Barrowman but really can't understand why Eve Myles was kept in show when others killed off- I really think she can't act at all. But won't let that put me off and hope it gets better. Can't expect much on first episode as they've got to set scene and all.

HarrietJones · 16/07/2011 18:50

I do like the twist that he is mortal when no one else is. I did think people not dying was a bit too Owen.

JB is starting to look v plastic too

ReshapeWhileDamp · 17/07/2011 09:56

JB is Botox Boy these days, sadly. Botox, and probably something more structural... I remember him saying that he knew he only had a finite period of time before his face fell (off??) and that now he'd got into primetime tv, he was going to mine it until that moment. I wish he didn't do such a load of crap though. Just after he got his tv break on DW, he was being risque and very adult on chat shows, etc, and I thought he'd choose that sort of tv persona - but Capn Harkness aside, he's TV's Mr. Anodyne now. Sad
