just seen a trailer with the gorgeous Captain Jack and Gwen. No idea when it will be shown bit I'm so happyyyy. We really thought they'd killed it off with the last series.

Anyone know when it's coming??!!

OP posts:

aitch again would completely agree that we're having to fill in so much of this ourselves. i took it that they had/found these things and it was only when they realised through the number crunching what the blessing actually did (ie the morphic field) that they they started experimenting on it. and then some bright spark thought, oh what if we put x and y together??

and also agree with people seeing the blessing and deciding to do good - perhaps the inference was that the family and their acolytes were not interested in good - only self-interest so they became more powerful... after all, it seemed a lot of people killed themselves afterwards.

oh and another thing - if ratty protected himself from the miracle with the null field then he would also have had mortal blood, no? so he also represented a threat to the family's plans... did they just not know he had secured an exit strategy? in which case they were not quite as omniscient as they thought...

teejwood · 16/09/2011 11:23

port - yy - also feel a little sad looking at the title and remembering how excited we were! oh if we only knew...

teejwood · 16/09/2011 11:28

ohhhh - just seen this elsewhere on t'interweb

"Jane Espensen tweeted a commentary on the episode..

"Listen to Gwen -- The Blessing could give a gift. Reach out and give a gift...".

"REX!!!! The Blessing DID give that gift! (not Jack's blood)"

it's bad when one of the writers has to tweet to explain it Hmm

AitchTwoOh · 16/09/2011 11:32

yes, teej, that is backed up by jilly being rather pleased with what she got from the blessing (shades of zaphod beeblebrox there, i thought).

but for EIGHTY YEARS not one of the family or their relatives saw anything other than a gigantic blessing-y pat on the back? not one of the henchmen? doubt it.

also, the people killing themselves, are we to assume that the japanese contract killer was conflicted about his role prior to seeing the blessing, and that's why he jumped off a tall building?

if the blessing is to see into your soul in some way, are we saying that the families and all their paid goombahs are rotten to the core and therefore quite happy with what they saw?

i don't really get it, tbh.

AitchTwoOh · 16/09/2011 11:32

oh dear re jane, that is fucking dreadful.

PortBlackSandWitchIsThere · 16/09/2011 11:32
Hmm

The Blessing could have done something a bit 'bigger' than give one bloke immortality surely ... like finding the answer for world hunger by becoming an endless KFC bucket fanny....

AitchTwoOh · 16/09/2011 11:35

hahahahahahaha the KFC Fanny to Feed The World.

that's finger lickin good.

PortBlackSandWitchIsThere · 16/09/2011 11:35

Yes - it's like being in an art gallery and having three sheets of A4 on a wall explaining why there is a brick and a twig in the corner

PortBlackSandWitchIsThere · 16/09/2011 11:35

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Grin

whatkungfuthat · 16/09/2011 11:44

This may sound thick but I am not an expert whovian and its TW equivilant - how did they know what the blessing would for certain on Miracle Day? They took a huge gamble in hoping that that everyone who became immortal could still get injured/brain dead and the rest would need the massive stockpile of Phicorp drugs. How did they know they weren't creating a whole world full of Captain Jacks who, instead of becoming dependent of them for drugs etc. had nothing to fear?

TashHag · 16/09/2011 11:47

"hahahahahahaha the KFC Fanny to Feed The World.

that's finger lickin good."

Aitch, that is possibly the single most repulsive image I've ever seen on MN...

Agree that this was nowhere near as good as it should have been and the pace exceedingly slow until last two episodes.
I have amused myself by regularly annoying DP with exclamations of why havent they tried to contact The Doctor? and where is Martha and Unit?. I was delighted when there was finally a refernce to Unit in the last ep.
The trouble is with TW being a spin off which originally had loads of references to DR Who and cross-over, to have a storyline so threatening to the world , you would have expected references to the Dr. Presumably the American audience couldn`t be expected to have watched the two programmes as so many of the UK audience have.

AnyoneButLulu · 16/09/2011 15:26

I did manage to watch all the way to the bitter end, but I think I missed 10 minutes here and there, so I need the answers to two vitally important questions.

A) why did Jack turn mortal when the Miracle happened? Totally fail to see the logic behind that.
B) why is everyone calling the CIA mole Evil Lesbian Charlotte? I think I missed the scene where they outed her.

NotDavidTennant · 16/09/2011 21:18

AitchTwoOh: 'but for EIGHTY YEARS not one of the family or their relatives saw anything other than a gigantic blessing-y pat on the back? not one of the henchmen? doubt it.'

I'm pretty sure that the blonde woman said that they only found the Blessing after they had the technology to 'crunch the numbers' and find the special neighbourhood in Shanghai. I think the idea was that they'd been looking for a way to use Jack's blood for decades but they'd only found the Blessing recently.

SquongebobSparepants · 16/09/2011 22:03

Okay, seen it.

SquongebobSparepants · 16/09/2011 22:20

IT DIDN'T MAKE ANY SENSE

Oh thank god I wasn't being hugely thick and you all thought it too. I mean, what?
Eve was fab but GOD those 'to camera' pieces are so fucking dull.
Really didn't like the Oswald thing, deeply creepy and unnecessary. He got to be the hero?!

What a load of shite. Why didn't they just grab them ffs. WHy did Gwen still have her gun after 10 minutes?

Ugh.

teejwood · 16/09/2011 22:38

aitch that was soooo wrong!!!!

has anyone looked at any other comment threads on this - eg Guardian review thread? let me tell you - we are being positively pleasant and forgiving in comparison.... Grin

no wonder he's saying he wants a break from sci-fi....

bless - bring it back home, rtd, tell JB and EM to take bloody pay cuts if necessary. compact and bijou in cardiff with a few weevils wins vs overbloated international co-production.

teejwood · 16/09/2011 22:46

interesting interview with espenson here

SquongebobSparepants · 17/09/2011 12:37

Oh and yes to the 'Here giant fanny, take my blood as it spurts out of me' thing was just...well..words fail me

AitchTwoOh · 17/09/2011 12:52

ah, okay davidt, but actually i think the point still stands. wouldn't one of the guards have had a revelation from the blessing, to the effect that his overlords were actually being kinda evil?

AitchTwoOh · 17/09/2011 12:54

that bit had me and dh in tears laughing, spongebob. the ultimate ejaculation.

mumwithdice · 17/09/2011 13:09

Anyone It's very brief. Rex says to Charlotte "Don't you have a home to go to?" And Charlotte replies "No, she left me".

But that's why.

notcitrus · 17/09/2011 13:47

Just caught up on the last 2 eps. I watched the second last one mostly on fast forward which I think improved it no end - the last one had some good lines but god it was slow - line, facial expression, pause, other character says something, camera pans slowly to someone else, who has to look shocked and amazed... I'm sure just speeding up all the bits between the dialogue by 50% would have helped it a lot!

At least having Esther die rather than Rex (given one of them obviously was) was slightly original, as was Danes not suddenly being redeemed or sacrificing himself to save the world. But now we have two immortals saving the world from the supernatural! Jack is no longer the one and only! Just like Buffy and Kendra... created by, oh, Jane Espenson, co-writer of this...

ScatterChasse · 17/09/2011 22:40

What really annoyed me was, somebody blown to shreds in an explosion can move, open their eyes etc., somedody strangled ditto, even somebody who got a bloody great pole through their chest is reasonably ok (until they go near a giant fanjo, but never mind that) but someone who has a heart attack can't move at all?

Agree with all the above, pleeeaase no more. Go back to Cardiff and pretend this never happened. Leave Rex somewhere (preferably down a well, but I'm not too fussy, just somewhere he won't intrude on the plot.)

Or, it was all a dream, Lewis Carroll can do it, why not RTD? It could be Gwen, battling all this guilt of hers...

Actually being fair, I think she's been superb this series.

Acekicker · 18/09/2011 10:18

Finally watched this on TiVo last night (it says a lot that it lost out to the US Killing for 'finale to watch on Friday night with wine and pizza').

I still maintain that with some decent editing they could have made a tremendous 6 episodes out of this - along with my previous comment about 3rd rock chap (who didn't really play much of a role when he reappeared), we didn't need the entire episode about the camps, nor the whole flashback one to NY etc.

I thought the Oswald thing was really well handled, half way through the finale they'd set him up to be the classic tragic hero and it was feeling very uncomfortable, therefore they kind of had to have the loathsome stuff at the end...

I'm disappointed that given it was a joint US/UK show they didn't have Captain Spike John in it at any point...
