Is the tattoo really that bad?

Got my first tattoo a few months back and was really pleased with it. Just posted it on reddit (first mistake I know) and everyone's saying it's awful

Is it still healing because the colour on the dinosaur looks like it still is. Don’t be bothered about what people think everyone has very different tastes when it comes to tattoos if you like it, that’s all that matters. Look up colourful tattoo sleeves to get more ideas to add on it

CrystalCoco · 30/06/2022 14:23

If the artist filled the brief and you got what you asked for / wanted and you like it then that's all that matters.
I've got a big tattoo that I like and the amount of people who think it's ok to go off on how much they hate tattoos, think they're tacky and cheap - ermmm hello, did I even ask your opinion much less show you the tattoo for comment?!

Cas112 · 30/06/2022 14:24

Its not even really the style of tattoo, its just poorly done OP.

I would go to a better artist for the rest of your sleeve and hopefully they can incorporate it in and do some amendments to make it look at bit more well done

BellePeppa · 30/06/2022 14:25

If you like it then that is all that matters. Don’t worry about other people and their tastes 👍

Superbabe64 · 30/06/2022 14:26

I think it looks a bit basic with very little detail...and agree with PP...also thought it was a dinosaur head.

sleepyhoglet · 30/06/2022 14:26

What made you choose it? It's not my style at all but it didn't get there accidentally so you must like.

thesugarbumfairy · 30/06/2022 14:26

I don't have tattoos but I'm not averse to them. If you like it, then that is what counts. I personally think this looks like its been done by an amateur. Its not bad, but its not something I'd want on me permanently and I would consider getting it reworked by a decent tattoo artist before getting a sleeve. I also thought it was a dinosaur BTW.

P205 · 30/06/2022 14:27

I worked with a guy who got his sleeve done in Japan by a tattoo artist who does tattoos for the yakuza. Even though I don't have tattoos myself, I could see that the artwork was just breath-taking. Really detailed and beautiful colours.

My co-worker got a tattoo recently and it looks awful. Just badly proportioned, badly drawn. I don't like it, but I'd never say so.

I agree with the others that the snake doesn't look great. It's not awful. I've seen much much worse, but I've also seen much better too.

The skull looks like “the mask” off the Jim Carey movie and the colours clash. Sorry, looks like it was done by someone with little experience.

PoseyFlump · 30/06/2022 14:30

Anyfeckinusername · 30/06/2022 13:18

I thought it was a skull and a dinosaur head and some algae?

That's exactly what I saw. I think the tattoo artist is lacking talent.

IncompleteSenten · 30/06/2022 14:30

I think a better artist would have made all the difference.

Whatever00 · 30/06/2022 14:30

I wouldn't get them to do another tattoo. The skull is okay. The artwork for the snake / dragon is terrible. The line work and shading is poor. I wouldn't ask strangers for suggestions on your tattoo. I thinks tattoo should reflect your personality or mean something. I think about how I can represent things that are important to be and draw them (badly) they I take those ideas to my tattoo artist and get them to work on my idea. However, they actually need to be good at drawing to do that.

the illustrated mum · 30/06/2022 14:31

Op you will get so many conflicting opinions on sm and in real life. The main thing is,do you like it? If not what would make you like it? Is that change realistic?

If you want my own opinion and again it doesn't really matter what I or anyone else thinks, then I do think it could be made better. The shading looks quite amateur and the colours are not great together.

But its permanently on your body so it needs to be right for you and you only.

Its not a theme I'd have chosen but then you might not like some or all of my tattoos, I have many hence my username.

MadeForThis · 30/06/2022 14:31

Reverse? Are you the artist?

Favouritefruits · 30/06/2022 14:31

I’m not keen on tattoos anyway so it may cloud my judgement, the purple looks a bit like felt tip colouring, it looks like a junior member of staff has ‘had a go’. If you like it ignore what others think, you’d probably think I’m really boring an plain.

wallpoppy · 30/06/2022 14:32

Your artist was going for a realistic (if fantasy-coloured) snake, but the black outlines ruin that completely. The snake looks like it was traced and coloured by a child who doesn't understand anything about either the physical anatomy of snakes, or light and shade, or art, in general. There's no sense of shape or indication of where the light would be coming from. There are weird choices like- why didn't the artist bring the black background behind the "free edge" of the snake's mouth and teeth, where you should be able to see the background behind it? The shading and colouring is also really patchy and badly done. The skull is a bit better than the snake but the orangey yellow is an odd colour choice especially as there is no contrast with the snake's belly so you have to sort of stare at it to figure out what is going on.

You should go to another better artist to fix this for you because it is genuinely very, very badly designed and badly executed and it will also look much worse with time.

i agree.
and this one looks particularly hideous. and that will be on your skin, in a visible area, for ever, or bad scarring.
if i was employing someone, unless they were absolutely outstanding for the job, and proven to be so, i would not pick someone with a visible tattoo.
i'm imagining a personal careworker, private nurse type role. but anything really.

Hateseaside · 30/06/2022 14:33

See I like colour tattoos, I hate just black. All tattoos are going to date, you will have they for life. Unless you have laser removal .

Lovemusic33 · 30/06/2022 14:33

The skull looks fine but the snake (if that’s what it is) looks out of proportion and not quite right, I would say it’s badly done.

I have some pretty awful tattooed that I had done in my teens, back in the day where tattoo artists were not great. I would like to get them covered up one day but finding a good tattoo artist isn’t easy.

Hoppinggreen · 30/06/2022 14:33

I am not going to comment any thing about the subject matter etc as its pretty subjective.
I would say though that I dont think its been executed very well, I am crap at drawing and I could draw better than that. I appreciate its different as a tattoo but they are called Tattoo ARTISTS and from an art point of view its not good

AgathaAllAlong · 30/06/2022 14:36

All that matters is whether you like it.

FfeminyddCymraeg · 30/06/2022 14:36

It’s pretty poor OP. Not the design but the execution. I wouldn’t have been happy with that.

I had some dodgy tattoos when I was younger and they are all now covered up with much, much better ones.

I would speak to some other artists to see what can be done with it - the design doesn’t look well considered, the colours are odd choices and the overall standard could be a lot better.

Where in the U.K. are you (roughly)? I’m sure you’ll get some recommendations for your area.

Anoooshka · 30/06/2022 14:36

I thought the snake was a dinosaur, but my screen is quite small.

If you like it, that's all that matters.

BackToTheTop · 30/06/2022 14:37

Not my cup of tea, but who cares what anyone else thinks, if you like it that's all that matters.

Tattoos can be fashion statements or very personal. Some look like proper drawings, some not. They all come around in the end. My dh (58) has some really old ones, done 40 years ago. When I first saw them I thought they were really naff, now the old school ones are back in fashion - go figure Confused
