Is the tattoo really that bad?

Got my first tattoo a few months back and was really pleased with it. Just posted it on reddit (first mistake I know) and everyone's saying it's awful

I looked at the reviews and they where all positive

OK but what about their portfolio of healed work -- not fresh tattoos, but post-healing. Did you look at that?

Is all of their work this quality, or is this unusual?

mynameiscalypso · 30/06/2022 13:19

I don't really understand what it's supposed to be. Is that a snake coming out of the skull? What's with the water (is it water?)?

SirChenjins · 30/06/2022 13:19

If you like it then that's what matters Smile

Out of interest, why a snake and a skull coming out of coral?

Davethecat2000 · 30/06/2022 13:20

I'm not a fan of it but then I prefer the neo-traditional style.

Runnerduck34 · 30/06/2022 13:21

Style ,design and colour of tattoo is subjective and trends come and go, you don't need to go for a design that's "in" right now, the important thing is are you have a design you are happy with.
I'm sorry people are being unkind on SM ,that's not helpful once you've just had a tattoo!
Are you pleased with it?
I don't think it looks bad it's a colourful traditional style tattoo.
I am not qualified to comment on quality of the work!
But please don't let others dent your confidence or pleasure in it.

jalapenita · 30/06/2022 13:22

Really looks awful in my opinion but people might say the same about mine which are black and white and quite simple so it's all up subjective

I thought it was a skull and a dinosaur head and some algae?

Me too. 😬

Steakcutchipswithsteak · 30/06/2022 13:24

Do you like the quality of the work? I agree that the subject is a matter of taste, and you sound like you still love that, so that's fine but are you also still happy with the execution? Because I'd have a problem with the lack of sharpness, patchy colouring/shading and overall amateuristic look of it. I'd consider having it redone a bit by a better artist.

lilroo87 · 30/06/2022 13:25

When going for a tattoo you should be pleased with the artists other work really.
Did you look at their other work before getting the tattoo?
It's not terrible but it could have been executed better.
The artist that has done my large tattoos is amazing, really long wait lists and not cheap but that's what you get for a good artist.
If you are wanting a full sleeve then maybe look at other artists that could perhaps achieve what you want but that would execute it better.
It's worth discussing with an artist as they can help you come up with a design that you would want.

I thought it was a wave with a dinosaur and a skull

JudgeRindersMinder · 30/06/2022 13:26

taking the subject matter out of it, I don’t think it’s been particularly well done, the colours are very blotchy and stark-I prefer to see the colours blending together a bit more. I’d actually go back and ask them to do something about the colour! It’s a bit “child’s colouring book” in my (unasked for!) opinion

RedCarsGoFaster · 30/06/2022 13:26

I thought it was a dinosaur as well....

Sorry OP, it's not so much the design which is a subjective preference, it's poorly done.

The shading is very patchy, the lines aren't very clean and I'd say the colours are not going to age well.

The local old skool tattooist in my town has just closed down after years of amazing reviews by huns and their ilk who think crappy tattoos like the one attached are brilliant.

Unfortunately, other people are not reliable for something like tattoos if their own standards are low.

Wait, that isn't supposed to be a T-rex?

SallyWD · 30/06/2022 13:28

It's not my style and I can't say I like it but also it's not terrible! It's fine and if you like it that's all that matters. I'm not really anti-tattoos but I prefer more delicate, subtle tattoos. We all have different tastes.

This is very true... I'm having 2 of my first tattoos reworked at the moment because they were done at one of these places.. they're not absolutely awful but now having more done by talented artists I can see the difference in quality and they need fixing

Me too. What was it supposed to be..?

inmyslippers · 30/06/2022 13:32

Snake, wave and skull?

Whitney168 · 30/06/2022 13:32

It was a bold choice for your first tattoo! (Also thought it was a dinosaur.)

AngelfishDecay · 30/06/2022 13:34

Looks cheap and nasty, to be honest - is that really what you wanted?

fantasmasgoria1 · 30/06/2022 13:43

For me the colours don't looks right.

Pleaseletmeconfirm · 30/06/2022 13:44

I don't like tattoos very much but I'd have thought yours was just a normal tattoo. I'd assume it was what you wanted. It's nice and colourful.

I wouldn't notice it one way or another really.

JupiterWeb · 30/06/2022 13:44

I have a few tattoos and none of them have healed like yours, it looks quite patchy. It's not my style of tattoo per say, but you don't get tattoos to gain opinion from people. You get them because you want them, it's your body, your skin and you want to embrace that. I would get some rework done personally, plus if going for a sleeve get the outline done first before block colour as you'll get a bit more of a feel for how to progress. But in all honesty you shouldn't give a stuff on what others think.

dolphinsarentcommon · 30/06/2022 13:44

To answer your question, yes it really is that bad.

MarmiteRiceCake · 30/06/2022 13:45

I’m not into tattoos for myself but have no problem with anyone else getting them. My dd has a foot tattoo.

What's important is that you like it and you got it for your own personal reasons.

AnuSTart · 30/06/2022 13:46

Are the skull and snake meaningful for you OP?
Did you choose the colours etc?

I have no tattoos as I'm risk averse. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks honestly. It's you that has to live with it forever.
