Oil cleansing method

mammya · 12/03/2009 08:56

Thank you to the mumsnetter who mentionned this a few days ago! I looked it up and have done it a couple of times, and it is fantastic! It has made such an amazing difference to my skin in such a short time: it is much clearer, softer, with no dry patches, and some old stubborn blackheads are finally gone. And it is cheap! What's not to like!

For anyone interested more info here

Well thank you christiana. I had never heard of it before. I wish I had found out about it years ago!

I have been thinking of trying this for a while. Think I'll definitely go for it now!

What blend of oils did you use?

HeadFairy · 12/03/2009 09:02

Sounds very much like the Eve Lom way of cleansing. It does work, I think often it's the combination of the massage and the warm cloth opening the pores. I sometimes do it as a treat but I use olive oil, perhaps I should try castor oil.

MadameCastafiore · 12/03/2009 09:04

OK so for us that can't be arsed to go through all that what do we do just use the oil for washing and moisturising.

This is very interesting as I got a leaflet from and some samples these the other day and thought I may give it a go.

mammya · 12/03/2009 09:05

I used almond oil with a drop of lavender essential oil, because I had some in my bathroom and couldn't wait to try.

I am going to get some castor oil, but I don't know who sells it. Anyone knows? I had a look in Boots (with very low expectations!) and they don't have it. Would a health food store have some?

MadameCastafiore, you could just use olive oil, it would be much cheaper and work very well from what I've read.

What you do is massage your face with the oil for a few minutes, insisting on areas with blackheads, then take a face cloth, soak it in very hot water (as hot as you can bear), squeeze it and apply it on your face until it cools down a bit. That's to steam your skin. Then you give it a light scrub with the cloth, and repeat until most of the oil has been removed. Finish by applying the cloth soaked in cold water. That's it!

I'm buying this - v. cheap.

KingRolo · 12/03/2009 09:59

If you scroll down the page it says customers who bought the castor oil also bought the Fleet ready to use Enema.

That's not me btw .

mammya · 12/03/2009 10:03

Yes I did see that KR, it made me laugh!

Thanks for the link. With postage it is not that cheap though!

ooh, that looks interesting, but it says not to do it too often so what do you do between oils, or have I missed something?

If you want some good quality plant based oils to use on your skin, I can highly recommend Essentially Oils and Bay House Aromatics

I am an aromatherapist and use both of these companies for my base and essential oils. They sell to non-trade customers too. You will generally find that the base oils available from these companies will be much better quality and less processed than regular oils from Boots etc. They can be expensive but you should bear in mind that you will be buying say 500mls which will last you at least 6 months. You should decant what you need on a weekly basis and store the rest in a dark, cool place away from sunlight (which degrades the oils).

You can also use enrichers in your base oil (so 30% enricher plus 70% base oil). These are still found in the base oil/vegetable oils sections - dont confuse them with essential oils. They have different properties so:

Dry skin: use evening primrose, avocado, wheatgerm or macadamia oil

Oily skin: jojoba, hazelnut

Acne: calendula (anti-inflammatory)

Sensitive: evening primrose

If you are adding essential oils to your face oil please ensure you only use 1 drop in 30mls of base. This is the maxiumum you want to go near your face - they can burn the skin if used in too high a concentration.

mammya · 12/03/2009 10:51

I do it every other night or so, on other nights I just use a cloth and water.

Thanks for that MrsJohnSimm, that's really useful information.

I really fancy doing that, but again how often is 'not too often' and what to do in between?

bluebump · 12/03/2009 11:05

I have been trying this every night too. It took me a while to get my combination right as I have fairly combination/oily skin but the suggestion for oily skin made my skin too dry so I put more almond oil in. My skin feels lovely after i've done it but I haven't noticed any difference in my skin yet, but I have only been doing it for 6 days - I think i'm just impatient! One thing i've noticed is that it seems to be drawing out my blemishes as it said it would, I keep thinking I notice a spot that is going to be huge in the morning but there is nothing there in the morning so that's good!

mammya · 12/03/2009 11:06

I suppose how often you do it is up to you, I'd say trial and error. The site I linked to in the OP says that if you do it too often you may get red and/or dry patches, so if you do get those then you are doing it too often! I've only just started using this method so not sure that I've got the frequency right.

tesco sell castor oil beside their Asian food

MadameCastafiore · 12/03/2009 12:10

Have just done it in the bath and I feel like I have been and had a proper facial at a salon!

Think may try it every other day and see how it goes.

Thanks - if I could chuck out all my facial paraphanalia I reckon I could afford a brand new spankingly expensive handbag by the end of the summer!

mammya · 12/03/2009 12:14

Thanks fatjac, I will see if they have it in my local Tesco

OP posts:
mammya · 12/03/2009 12:18

Yes that's exactly how I felt too, a proper facial at a salon.

I like that it is completely natural and sooo cheap as well as effective.

mammya · 12/03/2009 12:18
