Oil cleansing method

Thank you to the mumsnetter who mentionned this a few days ago! I looked it up and have done it a couple of times, and it is fantastic! It has made such an amazing difference to my skin in such a short time: it is much clearer, softer, with no dry patches, and some old stubborn blackheads are finally gone. And it is cheap! What's not to like!

For anyone interested more info here

Oxo, are you doing it every day? It might be worth trying to do it a bit less often if that's the case, maybe every other day?

You could also try another oil, perhaps sunflower oil, or almond oil.

Thanks for your replies to my questions. I had tinted moisturiser on yesterday and it came of really quickly and easily using this method.

I've only done it twice so far - Monday and Thursday, but haven't noticed any major difference to my skin yet. Should I be using more castor oil? I find my 20/80 mix with olive oil a little drying as it is. Or should I use it more frequently?

Also if you don't wash your face in the morning what do you do about spf? I've been washing my face the next day so I can whack the sunblock on.

mammya · 27/03/2009 10:14

I wash my face with water in the morning, in the shower. It seems enough!

As to the frequency and mixture of oils, I think you have to go by trial and error. If the mixture you are using now is too drying, perhaps you should use less castor oil. You may also want to try adding avocado oil to the mix, as it is good for dry skin. I use a mixture of olive oil, castor oil and avocado oil at the moment.

I find doing exactly the same thing every day helps.
My routine is:

PM -

  • immerse face in warm bath water
  • massage with olive oil
  • remove most with dry cotton pad
  • immerse face in warm bath water again
  • wipe rest off with warm face cloth
  • tone with witch hazel if necessary (and I'm pleasantly surprised at how often it's not!)
  • apply night cream/after sun

AM

  • wipe face with warm face cloth
  • apply sun lotion, then mineral make up if needed/necessary

My skin's never going be great but it's the best it can be now, thanks to this

ItsNotOnlyTheGoodBits · 27/03/2009 12:19

Ah - I see. So wash face with just water in the morning? That's going to take some getting used to!

I like the idea of adding avocado oil. Would I be able to get that in most supermarkets? It's not something I have bought before. I'm going to smell good enough to eat!

Hello, just to say I have been reading this thread with interest, have bought some castor + sunflower oil and am going to start using it from tomorrow night. (am on night shift tonight). I have awkward skin - dry but prone to big sore spots around my chin/jawline and am really fed up of shelling out ££££ on fancy products that don't work. Looking forward to giving it a go!

lilacclaire · 28/03/2009 13:11

Let us know how you get on PPC.

MaryAnnSailors · 28/03/2009 13:22

Convert here. Been using almond oil by itself for a while... massaging in and then using hot flannel to steam and remove twice, then cold flannel to close the pores. Works brilliantly for my skin. It will save me £100s over a lifetime. Thanks for another mumsnet gem to make life that bit simpler.

monkeysmama · 28/03/2009 13:50

I've only just seen this but it sounds interesting. Would anyone mind a recap of what to do for newbies?

Am going to try again but maybe only 2 or 3 times a week. Howevever I will persevere with the olive oil as an eye make-up remover as its much kinder than my old Clinique one IMO

Horton · 29/03/2009 18:34

Can I ask if any of you who are having good results are quite oily? I am v v oil-slick-like in the face area and currently suffering from spots like you wouldn't believe. Really really teenage huge boils. Horrible. Anyone think it might help?

Thanks. I think I might give it a go.

akhems · 31/03/2009 11:21

Horton my skin was very oily but this method seems to have sorted it and now it doesn't really get overly shiny at all.. fabulous

Alibabaandthe40bunnies · 31/03/2009 15:02

Horton I am prone to oiliness too - and I find my skin now stays matt for much longer. Give it a try and see how you get on, you may need to have quite a lot of castor oil in your mix (20% I think is recommended for oily skin).

Those of you not doing this every night - how are you taking off your makeup on the other days and are you washing your face with anything?

Horton · 31/03/2009 18:52

Oh thanks, people! Will definitely give it a go. Love the idea of no shininess (have been cursed with extra shininess since about age 13).

naomi83 · 31/03/2009 20:26

have been watching this thread for ages and have my castor oil and various other oils ready to try it out, problem is i'm always too knackered in the evening to have a proper go, silly uestion but could i do this first thing in the mornig, or would my skin look awful all day?

brimfull · 31/03/2009 20:27

I have done it in the morning but I still cleaned my face before bed .

I do it early evening just after putting ds to bed.

Alibabaandthe40bunnies · 31/03/2009 22:16

Naomi I did mine this morning because I had missed a couple of days. My skin has been lovely all day, no shininess and lovely and soft.

MrsMcCluskey · 31/03/2009 22:18

I did mine this morningtoo and i look fabulous!

pispirispis · 01/04/2009 14:54

Has taken me a while to report back, but I've been doing this for a week or so now, with almond oil and castor oil while I wait for my sunflower oil to arrive, and I love it! I have oily skin and I've found this method makes it much less oily and more matt, and so soft! And I can't believe the blackheads I've had on my nose for 17 years are actually getting better! I still have a few spots, but they're smaller and I don't have great skin anyway, and I am stressed, tired and eating chocolate!

The only problem is it feels so nice and relaxing I'd love someone to massage my whole body with oil and wrap me in hot towels!!

XGirl · 01/04/2009 20:12

I've been trying this for a week now with baby oil (lavender night time one as it's smells dreamy)and my skin has gone form deep sore spots on my chin to almost nothing. I'm so happy and still can't quite beleive it. Thank you to everyone who has given advice
