I’ve just used chat gpt to look at my Sunday Riley ceo as an eg ( brand not listed on Check Fresh) and it said ‘I’ve checked specifically for Sunday Riley codes, and there is a big red flag with the online decoders:

• One current decoder says Sunday Riley uses formats such as L + YYMM, but S158 doesn’t fit that format.
• Another database shows Sunday Riley codes such as GG120, again demonstrating that there are different/older formats.
• Most importantly, there are recent 2026 reports of people being told by Sunday Riley that batch-code websites were giving incorrect dates. In one case, the website said a product was expired, while Sunday Riley confirmed it was actually good until 2028.
• Sunday Riley has historically told customers that its products have around 3 years unopened shelf life, with up to a year after opening. ‘

so I do think the batch code websites need to be used with caution. @hellesbells, I’d definitely raise concerns with Liberty but I genuinely don’t think there can be issues with all of these ( I hope I’m right!)

Yes thr Reome is out of date in early 2027 but so is the Jones Road Balm which also cant be recycled batch code because the company is too young i will contact CS tomorrow and report back

I agree I've been trying different ones and they're giving different things especially for Sunday Riley which isn't on check fresh. The rules for SR don't work(mine is E127A and it thinks Jan 2017). Check fresh seems to work well though so I'll do my murad serum in oldest first order assuming I like it.

I love French brands. Every year I look forward to the French Pharmacy AC but I find it way too overpriced for a large collection of, mostly, small samples. Not value for money and not real luxury either. It sells out very quickly though. I never bought it although the anticipation is real every year.

@hellesbells how frustrating that so many are close to expiring 😔 That's very unlucky. I thought it was only the Sisley that was an issue with the date. I think I'm going to check the products in my advent calendars now.

I am using the Reome and Jones Rd Balm as my baseline so to speak they cant be recycled the companies are too young they are both out of date early January so i have assumed (perhaps wrongly) that the other batch number are correct and the products are out of date i dont feel confident using them, also half the stuff isnt in a box the SR come in a box but in the calendar it just a bottle

@SheilaFentiman - my understanding is that the companies reuse codes every ten years so the codes that @hellesbells has checked will likely be accurate and current.

If they were recycled codes, my understanding, (albeit limited to my own experience), is that the most up to date code would show on the checker. In other words, a code from April 2016 would have been recycled/reused in April 2026 and the date of manufacture of the item would show as 04/26 even if you knew the stuff in question had been in your cupboard for years

There are a few other date code check sites that you can cross-reference with to see if there have been any errors, but generally CheckFresh is pretty accurate ime.

@hellesbells - I hope you can contact CS and ask for a full refund.

I am shocked but not that surprised - ever since I watched MissBoux’s video about NEXT beauty boxes - all three of hers were years out of date - it’s really given me pause.

Liberty should have spent less money on that awful advert and a bit more on products that are actually intact, safe and fit for purpose!

Of course - not all brands are on CheckFresh and some use code systems that require you to contact them directly.

I did that with Liz Earle recently and they were very helpful. The product in question has about another year to go before expiry, so that was good.

It’s one thing if we choose to use ancient products that we can’t bear to part with - quite another to have them passed off as new in an a/c.

I am really keeping everything crossed now either for SK’s a/c or Korean Skincare Company’s!

Completely understand you must have lost confidence and def worth talking to them. Re the boxes. I always find it odd that products aren’t boxed. I found that with some of my Harrods too, in the unboxing the Gucci gloss is boxed but not in mine, likewise lots of other advent products, I guess that’s what the brands provide for the calendars? Maybe someone with more experience/ knowledge than me will know more.

Liberty did ask me to send them a photo of the code on the bottom of the Sisley bottle and then went ahead and replaced it without question.
Surely, if it was in date, they would have just said so instead of sending a new one out without any further quibble??

I’m really sorry everyone is having a nightmare with their Liberty Advent. I am finding Liberty quite disappointing for such a well renowned shop. I have BD credit and find it hard to spend as every time I look for something I want they don’t stock the brand. I find myself wishing I’d popped the money into a separate account to spend at Christmas, the only reason I don’t cancel is the FOMO of a good box. It’s like the joy of these shops has been squeezed out because of the costs associated with trading now.

Like others, I wish that brands would just put a made on or use by date in a normal format on their packaging.

It also must make it hard for the edit-makers/packers because they won’t necessarily know easily if a particular piece of stock is close to date!
