I agree @ClutteredPalace - so retailers are - probably - buying thousands of units of, for example, the Sisleya, at about £5 each to pass onto customers in a/cs.

I would expect the buying teams for these large retailers to be well aware that brands are selling at such a low price point to clear excess stock, which may well include items that are short-dated/expired.

The implication is that some retailers - allegedly - just don’t care about how old/fit for purpose the products in their a/cs are, and assume customers will not think to check.

On a related note: I used to buy quite a lot from the various beauty outlets at places like Bicester. In future, I will be checking product codes in these places before purchasing, as it seems likely that some of their stock is also pretty old.

@hollyblueivy - I think if you are new to some of the brands in the M&S calendar and will use most of them, then it’s a solid, good value purchase.

Last year, M&S apparently reduced their a/c in the run up to Xmas, (although it was sold out where I live so discounts can’t be relied upon).

It may therefore be worth holding on for a bit if you’re not bothered either way, but, as with everything else - if you really want it, best to get it asap.

On a positive note, I’ve been using the Sisley lotion for a couple of weeks and it’s amazing. Or maybe that’s not so amazing, considering the price of it 😭

I wanted to buy a few items, REN and MZ Skin amongst them, at TKMaxx. Glad I checked CheckFresh there and then, Ren was 4 years old so I won't be buying anything which has expiry date from them.

On the subject of good old Boots (I promise I don't work for them, just very close to one of their flagship stores), I bought some Dior and Clarins skincare recently, checked the dates - they both were only 2-3 months old! couldn't believe my eyes. Even when I buy directly from Clarins site it's usually about a year old or more, they usually have 5 years shelf life.

I bought mz rich cream from TK Maxx a while ago, loved it. When it ran out I bought one full price (with discount) from SNK and the new one was so much nicer! Just a better consistency and seemed fresher. It hadn't occurred to me to check the date on the TK Maxx one at the time but now I realise a lot of their products must be old or stored poorly, that's why they're so cheap!

Oh, it's last year's 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Ummmm, not sure whether to admit I almost certainly have it still if it was last year's, as I don't recall using it; I've made a note to have a look at the hidden stash.

Floopsy · 16/09/2026 11:42

Hi all

I've got the LF BAC for my Mum for Xmas. I reckon she'll like everything in it apart from the SDJ spray. What could I replace it with that's the same sort of size and more suited to a 75 yo woman?

Thanks

Do you mean another body spray type product or just anything that would fit that drawer? If the former Saltair body sprays and deodorants are nice and a bit more 'grown up' than SDJ. If the latter perhaps a hand cream would fit nicely in the space.

She's not into body sprays so it would have to be a product that's a similar size to the small SDJ bottles.

@hellesbells how frustrating that so many are close to expiring 😔 That's very unlucky. I thought it was only the Sisley that was an issue with the date. I think I'm going to check the products in my advent calendars now.

I don’t think it’s luck, it’s brands/manufacturers trying to get rid of products that are close to expiry. I had this with Glossybox last year. The sunscreen had a March expiry date, so it didn’t even last until the summer which was useful! 🙄. I won’t buy from them again as I can’t trust that the products will be fresh.

AprilLady · 15/09/2026 14:18

Just wanted to comment briefly on China and cruelty free products. My understanding is that the issues around animal testing are about products sold in China, not about products manufactured in China but not sold there. So it is quite possible for a brand to be cruelty free and do manufacturing in China if they do not sell their product into that market.

I have gone for Vogue this year - I like the variety of products, including the jewellery.

Edited

I’ve decided to go for Vogue too. I saw that the Jewellery is currently sold on the Liberty website and it looks really nice, so hopeful that it will be decent quality.

MidnightMeltdown · 16/09/2026 12:25

Still tempted by F&M. Has anyone tried the Clive Christian fragrance in this calendar? It’s £650 for 50ml 😮

I meant having so many that have expired or close to expiry in 1 AC. That is unlucky, as most people have had 1 or 2 items that might be close but not most of them. My Sisley is the Jan expiry date, I bought it on vinted to put in my advent calendar but I'm having to use it now. I'm going to go through my Harrods and Cult Beauty acs to check the products in those.

January is bad! Let us know if you find any other short expiry dates. We need to name and shame the companies that are sending us their old products!

Ive not tried this one, but the Clive Christian fragrance from last year’s calendar was gorgeous. I think F&M is the only BAC tjst has tempted me at all this year and I’m starting to waver a bit. Apart from the socks, I woulda probably use everything.

Hmmm… I’m tempted. I was only supposed to be getting one this year, but given that Vogue has lots of accessories and fewer beauty products, I’m wondering whether I can justify another one 😂😬

I did add pictures but it seems MN didn't upload them 🙄 And since I've gone to the effort of a screenshot and crop, you're getting the images 🤣

Reb642 · 16/09/2026 15:25

I finally received my pre-ordered Harrods BAC today and it is lovely! It is such a nice strong box and I am going to keep it to store all my Christmas decorations in.

This is the first year I have bought beauty advent calendars and I still can’t quite believe what a good deal they are (assuming the products aren’t out of date).
The Harrods calendar is half stuff I am really excited about and half stuff I don’t want, but it’s still such a bargain.

I am planning on putting some items on Vinted later (mostly the hair, perfume and make up). My Vinted name is the same as here if anyone is interested.

Reb642 · 16/09/2026 15:43

IlovePond · 15/09/2026 21:05

I’ve been thinking about beauty calendars - given how much stuff I already have, my ideal calendar for this year would be:

Just the one 12 day calendar containing:

Four unusual but lovely 10-15ml perfumes
A really good eye cream
Ditto moisturiser
A pretty eyeshadow palette
A cute lipgloss -preferably from SK
One good shampoo and conditioner
A couple of cute and useful accessories, (not eyelash curlers 🙀)

’Cute’, ‘pretty’ and ‘lovely’ are subjective, of course - so in my ideal calendar creation world, the curators of my dream calendar would know me better than I know myself!

What would you all have in your dream calendar?

I thought about starting a separate thread to discuss fantasy advent calendars.

My ideal would probably have very high end expensive products but in smaller sizes, so I could try lots of things that feel too expensive to buy without already knowing whether I love them.

I would prefer smaller sizes of luxury items rather than having cheaper filler items. Smaller items would also make it fun to use through December to try out different things rather than building up a big stash.

I would also like more make up variation (again it can be in sample sizes) eg. interesting colours of eyeshadow or eyeliner or something made specifically for the calendar like a miniature Guerlain Meteorites or mini Cle de Peau luminising powder compact.

For brands I would want things like Cle de Peau, Sisley, Shiseido, Tatcha, Murad, Chantecaille, AB, Dior, Chanel, MZ Skin, Victoria Beckham.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 16/09/2026 16:04

I’d love a Chantecaille AC. Mind you, given the price of their products you’d probably need to take out a mortgage to buy it!
