Fashionistas- what's going to be in this autumn?

What are the main trends going to be would you say?

OP posts:

I keep reading articles that say this is the fashion trend. Then the next article pretty much entirely refutes what the first article says! 🫤

im trying to pick and choose what I take notice of - ignoring all the chocolate and chartreuse and burnt orange and khaki ; and liking the aubergine and aqua.

And ignoring the silky slip dress with lacey trimmings but not minding the satin trousers etc. Although I feel a lot of those satiny slip dresses are Victoria Beckham inspired. I don’t mind David and Victoria, wish them all the best. But find it slightly weird she’s seen as this style guru. Her stuff is very strong on identity but it bores me a bit.

Things I can see as touted everywhere are the continuation of sportswear to wear anywhere with a preppy vibe. If I’ve seen one bright red sporty windcheater bomber jacket with funnel neck I’ve seen a thousand. (Yes I succumbed 😁). Also asymmetric skirt shapes, heritage fabrics and animal print in natural animal colours (🤨) rather than say red or green leopard print. Zebra, Dalmatian, snake skin in the appropriate colours.

Also tonnes of faux leather and faux suede. What’s that all about?

I also see articles like what’s in style this autumn/fall? And can pretty much guarantee 5 out of 8 items will be barrel leg trousers. Which surprised me as they’ve been around a long time now.

Incidentally are British and US fashions the same these days? They used to be quite different.

tobee · 07/09/2026 20:13

Oh and I probably shouldn’t even be answering this as I’m not really a fashionista!!

tobee · 07/09/2026 20:21

Oh yes I missed off the sneakerina (a word that makes me want to barf) and the dance shoe. Sort of anti fashion imo. Are they still doing the loafer/mary jane with grey socks thing? A bit Emma Corrin. Not my style role model.

Princessfluffy · 07/09/2026 20:38

Quiet luxury is boring neutrals which are supposed to make you look like a rich person but obviously doesn’t fool anyone and frankly just looks dull.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/09/2026 20:42

@Princessfluffy I don’t agree. There is a way to dress quietly but you wear luxury fabrics. Anyone who knows about fashion can tell a Max Mara camel coat from a cheap copy. Neither does it mean you cannot add a more colourful scarf or bag. Overall it’s the quality of what you wear and it’s not fast fashion. Many simply cannot pull it off because they don’t have the taste required or the money.

Princessfluffy · 07/09/2026 21:02

If you are genuinely rich enough to wear a maxmara coat then I agree you will look rich/luxury. But 99% of the people wearing “the quiet luxury trend” aren’t spending maxmara money on it. I do get bored with the lack of colour on British high streets especially in the winter time. And especially when combined with minimalism. Maximalism is a whole lot more fun and interesting to me!

Cantonet · 07/09/2026 21:08

I look great in boring neutrals @Princessfluffy.
My ideal would be to dress in Maxmara/Marella/Italian designers all the time. In my 30's I did but then swapped it all for 4 kids/uni fees.

Princessfluffy · 07/09/2026 21:33

Don’t get me wrong I would love a maxmara coat but I’d mix it with colour.
I’m a colour junkie though - we are all different and neutrals can be interesting as can silhouettes.
4 kids sounds infinitely better than an expensive wardrobe though.

It’s like 1981 again 🙈

The colours? I remember making a brown skirt at school.

I have 3 Max Mara coats, 1 black,
1 camel and a navy 101801 icon.

However I agree with you that "quiet luxury" and "looking groomed" style that some MN posters are obsessed with can be really boring. The Max Mara coats are the only items I own which are so restrained. Maximalist here.

StripeyPJs · 07/09/2026 21:42

I got a long, black MaxMara coat on Vinted last year. Beautiful coat, such good quality and hangs beautifully, but it feels soooo smart in today’s slightly schlocky UK fashion climate, I hardly wear it.

Must wear it more this winter …and to hell with chocolate brown/ barrel legs / boxy tops!

My comfort zone was beautifully tailored, all-black 90s Prada (or Prada rip-off!). I loved that look. Colour is overrated!

I think the 4 kids have been a source of so much more fun than a somewhat souless wardrobe 🙏🏼

Boring brown is everywhere.

Oh - and ladylike. Blazers and longer skirts. Neat knits and satin shirts.

Thank god for that, I was getting sick of the 'casual casual' office wear trend and yearning for a smarter vibe.

Bloody hate brown. If it's a plummy sort of brown I can possibly give it a try but almost every other shade I can't stand. Possibly my most hated colour, along with orange.

I love brown, how is it more boring than black, navy or grey?

Because it is.

Bloody brown everything! M&S brown everything from pyjamas to bath mats plus some disgustjng bile colour.Who designs this crap? Whats wrong with some upllifting colour to lighten our mood through the autumn winter months. My school uniform was brown and I swore I would never wear that so called colour again.

All of this. If you believe in ‘having your colours done’ I’m a jewel winter and there is no part of me that will be wearing brown.
Shops look so depressing. I suppose on a hopeful note, last year’s vivid colours will be waiting for me in the charity shops when all the fashionistas have discarded them!

It's the colour of poo

Cailleach1 · 10/09/2026 08:56

Brown can look beautifully rich. Think chestnut, cocoa, copper and russet. Black, grey and blue can look flat too. Any colour can. Depends on the richness and depth of the shade, too.

I remember seeing a Victoria Beckham picture with chartreuse trousers, paired with a deep mauve/violet blouse. The colours looked fabulous together.

I agree. Some people have very limited imaginations.

Brown is indeed everywhere. I think as in Sainsbury’s Tu and lots of brown. Plus their viral polka dot bomber jacket (think that’s name) is back in another colour way so I think polka dots are still in.

I actually like the violet chartreuse combo but this comment is hilarious!
I also like and suit brown but wouldn’t pair with purple because I don’t want to look like a bar of dairy milk

Tiddlywinkly · 11/09/2026 07:28

Can I still get away with a bit of argyle?
