What are the main trends going to be would you say?

They've been running 'skinny jeans are back' articles for the last two autumns at least. And of course eventually they will filter down again. But a lot of people only got into a wider, looser leg quite recently so I don't expect another mass switch for a while yet and, from what I've seen so far, high street buyers seem to agree.

I do however expect to see more narrower straight legs around this autumn, especially if the weather predictions are accurate.

It normally takes a few years for things to filter down from the catwalk, you have the early adopters and then the masses. Take ballet pumps, back in from 2022 and it’s only really this summer I have started to see them on lots of people. The Samba trainer took about 3 years to be everywhere.

I know the Topshop Joni jean is selling well but I think we are a couple of years off everyone wearing them.

Floisme · 06/09/2026 12:40

I think a change of jeans shape is much bigger than ballet pumps and trainer styles though. It's a whole new silhouette. It'll happen, no doubt about that, but I think it'll take more than a couple of years for it to become mainstream again.

RampantIvy · 06/09/2026 12:41

In marketing terms I'm a laggard 😁
I don't think I will ever wear skinny jeans again now.

Floisme · 06/09/2026 12:44

I'm fickle and flighty so I expect I will wear skinnies again at some point! But first I'll have to start finding them interesting again and so far there's absolutely no sign of that happening to me.

Girlwithavibe · 06/09/2026 12:44

I'll tell you what's in fashion or a trend !
ANYTHING YOU BLOODY WANNA WEAR!!!
Not everyone suits a trend or colour but those who look cool AF always wear what they want they have a unique sense of their own style !!
Bloody useless your imagination and dress to your own style ! Sorry but these threads really annoy me !
Same reason I came off socials people trying to influence what's micro trending just wear what u look great in x

Floisme · 06/09/2026 12:45

Sorry @Girlwithavibe I didn't realise you were being forced to read it.

RampantIvy · 06/09/2026 12:46

Well said @Girlwithavibe although I like to wear something with a nod to what is current.

lippylip · 06/09/2026 12:49

@RampantIvyI always think trends sort of creep up on you. All of sudden something just looks right when it used to look a bit wrong. I used to work in buying & we also had a in-house design team so set our own trends as well. Sometimes I would look at the new stories/trends & think I don’t like that & then a few months later I would be all over it!

One trend I have never returned to though is square toed shoes, wore them in the 90s & never again.

Love kilts, pleats and brown. Have lots of stuff already.

Do not like funnel necks with big boobs. And no thanks to chartreuse!

I hope drop waists disappear. Impossible for me with my belly!

I like the midi length kilts but all I can picture is Barbara Wood house when I see them.

Some of us have an interest in fashion, hence why we are here and discussing it.

I don’t think being interested in your wardrobe/fashion means blindly following trends. You still wear what suits you but just update your look with little nods so you still are true to your own style but look current.

Oh God not dark brown again 😪

I was at the shops yesterday and every jumper or top was short in the body - what's that all about?

Short/cropped tops work better with wide leg trousers proportion wise. I dread the day skinnies come back on that basis as I've now got loads of short tops.

RaraRachael · 06/09/2026 12:58

I normally look forward to autumn and winter dressing.
But having been forced to wear kilts and brown and orange monstrosities as a 70s child this year holds no appeal to me.

You are spot on. I resisted skinnies for years then succumbed. I just don't find them comfortable any more, and straight and wide leg trousers suit me better anyway.

I don't understand this. Do you really change everything every season?

And even if you do, do you really buy colours you don't like?

I think brown is awful. At most I might have something which has brown as part of a pattern but I don't own anything in solid brown.

EllaPaella · 06/09/2026 13:13

I’d definitely go back to wearing a skinny jean but only with chunky boots and an oversized chunky knit. I used to live in them but have become totally unaccustomed to seeing myself in them as I’ve just not worn them for a few years now. Jean styles are funny, everyone thinking a barrel leg is suddenly ‘in fashion’. I’ve been wearing barrel leg trousers for years, they’ve been around with brands like Toast for a long long time.
Ballet pumps are definitely not compatible with a wet and windy winter.
I also am a big fan of brown, i’ve got red undertones in my hair and I think Brown is definitely a good colour on me.
I’m not a fan of burgundy and bogey green is definitely not going to be on my wish list.
I don’t think i’ll be making any big style investments this winter, it all seems very similar to last year.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/09/2026 13:28

I don’t mind brown in patterns/checks/stripes/even the odd floral tbh, but I really dislike block brown.

DestituteDesperate · 06/09/2026 13:36

I miss the days when I could go into shops and see some colour.

brown seems to have been in forever and day now, the clean girl aesthetic is also boring, everyone just looks like clones of one another in a shade beige, brown or boring!

cuberoot · 06/09/2026 13:38

As an Autumn season I'm happy with the browns, but as a short apple I'm much less keen on the barrel legs, ugh.

Neuronimo · 06/09/2026 13:43

I quite like a rich chocolate brown and also burgundy. I've bought a long line, grey tweed kilt on Vinted. I am short so I'm not sure I can pull it off, but I'll give it my best short. I do have a vintage St Michael, black mohair, double breasted cardigan that might work. It's quite fitted at the waist. That's an awful lot of adjectives!

LagoLady · 06/09/2026 13:57

I wear skinny jeans and wellies or boots for dog walks. I don’t feel it’s fashionable, but they feel more practical than other trousers

paddleboardingmum · 06/09/2026 14:03

Enjoying reading this chat thanks all. I have a few questions, how about bootleg jeans? are they still a thing. Also, For those amongst us with wide hips (me) pleated skirts are a no go. How about the straighter silky skirts? Quite like the idea of proper shoes not trainers but like pp said ballet flats are hard if it's cold. What type of boots or trainers are in?

I don't mind brown but burgundy and orange are terrible on me. Kilts are a no-go. Quite surprised skinny jeans might be back!

I would love a tweed kilt but might look like Miss Marple in that.

Everything I look awful in especially burgundy and I havent worn a flared check skirt since the 1980s.
I wont be a follower of fashion this autumn.
You can call it rich shades of brown but its still just brown.

Funnel necks which I do not get as they will be covered with make up!

Don’t like them! Prefer to add a nice scarf.
