What to wear to Wimbledon in your mid fifties

ForBusyOliveBear · 12/06/2026 21:19

I’m looking for suggestions of what to wear to Wimbledon, I’m trying to move away from my previous few summer’s uniform of midi dresses.
I am mid 50’s, need petite range and want to look as nice as I can as it’s a special day for my DH and I.

But have you changed your mind about Engelbert Humperdinck in the intervening years ...??!!!

Definitely not. However by the time Mull of Kintyre hit the top of the charts I was adult enough to accept that other people had a right to buy records I didn't like Grin

What a hideous ‘outfit’. Looking on my phone I had to zoom in on picture as couldn’t make out if the person wearing it was a bloke or a woman. Looks like something a mechanic would wear. Go Grease Lightening!

Of course it's a woman, not a "bloke" - a very beautiful woman at that, with enviable cheekbones.

And I wasn't recommending something that you think is "hideous" - that wasn't the point of my post. I was replying to another poster saying that I think jumpsuits are considered fairly normal pieces of clothing these days.

It's a much plainer style, but I noticed this Massimo Dutti one a while ago & quite liked it. I also liked this And/Or one at John Lewis, though it is slightly oversized.

Thanks but I prefer the more tailored style. I have a couple of the marks scandi style ones for more casual wear.

This is rather ironic coming from someone who has made another poster’s thread about them.

How is this thread about me? All I'm doing is questioning why OP felt the need to start a thread in Style and Beauty about a sporting event.

These days it is actually very difficult to go and enjoy events because of the way other people behave. Not just sporting events but every aspect of life is affected by the quite often selfish behaviour of others. This thread has made me wish I wasn't going to Wimbledon at all if OP is representative of the other spectators in thinking that what they are wearing is more important than the tennis.

And I feel strongly about this because firstly I am a tennis fan and secondly I cannot abide obsession with appearance when it's what a person is like in themselves, and how they behave, that matters. Not what they look like and not what they are wearing.

These days it is actually very difficult to go and enjoy events because of the way other people behave.

That's how you are making it about you.

If I had to put money on it, I'd say you are feeling intimidated about what to wear (no need to be) and are hitting out. But you are turning this int oa thread about your anxieties/irritations.

Well no I'm quite happy with what I'm wearing - a quite pretty summer dress and sandals. I am worried about the heat because there have been spectators fainting with the heat at Nottingham in previous years and I expect Wimbledon heat to be intense.

But you are right in that I find peoole who get really dressed up amd who are intensely into clothes and all that goes with it very intimidating. They are not people I feel at all comfortable to be around. And I go to a lot of various sporting events and one of the attractions of these events is that the focus is generally on the sport and I feel comfortable amongst people who are into sport. I obviously avoid things like " Ladies Days" where its all about women dressing up and not the sport.

I know that towards the end of Wimbledon there is a lot of celebrity spotting and we avoided tickets for the end of the tournament because of this. But this is the second thread on MN about what to wear at Wimbledon and it has seriouslty depressed me because im beginning to wonder if this is representative of the spectators who will be there. Because if it is I will be a fish out of water and Wimbledon will be a huge disappointment to me. I've been a tennis fan all my life , since a little girl , and the thought of actually getting to Wimbledon and finding myself amongst people who are obsessed with clothes will be such a disappointment and such an unhappy experience i'm beginning to regret getting the tickets.

Do not worry! The overly dressed up are the very small minority! Most people still thankfully go for the same reasons as you and I go - to watch the tennis in clothes we feel
comfortable in x

As a pp has said, it’s perfectly possible to love tennis and fashion.

Look at the players - generally very well dressed off the courts.

Naomi Osaka must blow that poster's mind.

Are you still there @ForBusyOliveBear ? The last post I saw, I think you said you had sorted out a dress and bag but were looking for sandals?

And what about a fan? We need to know!

Feel free to pass your tickets on then. You’re being dramatic because of 2 threads on MN. Give over. Why you’re linking a desire to look nice with drunkenness and badly behaved spectators I have no idea. The OP is also having a special day out and is in a VIP section which presents a slightly different challenge to the average punter

Truthfully, a sizeable number of people I know who go to Wimbledon are going as a social event. I know someone who has been several times and didn't even understand the scoring the first few times.

But there will be loads like you. And a pretty summer dress and sandals is not going to attract the least bit of negative attention - so don't feel intimidated. Just live and let live.

Love that. Love knitted dresses and skirts, especially ones that use the characteristics of knitting in the design. See that looks stylish, smart, a bit unusual, AND easy and comfortable. Great dress. And cotton too. 😍

I don't equate people who get dressed ip at a sporting event with drunkeness and bad behaviour.

There is a lot of drinking at the tennis which is a nuisance, especially when the drinkers are forever having go out to the toilets and disrupting other spectators. And also being nosy.

The peole who treat a sporting even just as an opportunity to dress up and show themselves off are a different issue altogether. Why go to a sporting event if its just another social occasion where you can show off? Why not leave it for people who are actually interested in the sport? I dont understand their inflated egos and self absorption.

I don't feel intimidated by how I will be dressed.

I just don't want to be in a crowd of people who are there to dress up and show off. They are not the type of people I want to mix with. If they arent interested in the sport why spoil it for people who are?

I'm very self aware.

How does expecting people who go to sporting events to be actually interested in the sport translate into having an inflated ego?

Why does that remind me of the end of Shirley Valentine where her H arrives on the beach in his shirt and tie.

I know I'm wasting my time but your arrogance is breathtaking.

I just don't want to be in a crowd of who there to dress up and show off. They are not the type of people I want to mix with.
Who the hell do you think you are?

If they arent interested in the sport why spoil it for people who are?
How is the way anyone around you is dressed spoiling it for you or anyone else?

I could say more but nothing is going to dent your ironclad self absorption and ego.

I find people who are really only interested in their looks and clothes and being seen at the right places intensely egotistical and full of themselves and that is not the type of people' I am comfortable with. Being with people like that makes me as uncomfortable as I would be attending an Oasis concert or a Tory Party conference. I just don't want to be with people like that. I prefer warm, friendly, down to earth, kind people. I don't see what is arrogant about that. Most people have definite preferences as to who they want to mix with and who they want to avoid

And of course it mars a sporting occasion if a percentage of the crowd doesn't engage with the sport. Sporting occasions are very about atmosphere and crowd engagement.

I would never have thought of that so I’ve just ordered one from Amazon.

If it’s boiling hot the fans with a little water reservoir are wonderful. My DD brought one with her last year and I was very grateful.

I’ve worn mostly dresses with very clean white leather trainers as these are the only things my feet can cope with. You do a HUGE amount of walking. Plus take a cardigan, squashy hat, handbag umbrella and a wrap. Unless the forecast says it’s going to be very cool or very wet, I don’t take a coat - London tends to be warmer than the rest of the country. One year when temperatures were forecast to be cooler I have worn trousers with a casual jacket but make sure they are not linen otherwise you’ll look like they just been pulled out of the laundry basket.

As soon as you know where your seats are, that will help with what you need. Near the court you will need a hat, sunglasses, fan and a coverup. Further back check if you are on the north or east side as the sun extends quite far in under the canopy. Right at the back - you will be fine.

I always take hair bands and lip balm too as lips can get dry and if it’s warm it’s worth tying your hair up.
