What to wear to Wimbledon in your mid fifties

I’m looking for suggestions of what to wear to Wimbledon, I’m trying to move away from my previous few summer’s uniform of midi dresses.
I am mid 50’s, need petite range and want to look as nice as I can as it’s a special day for my DH and I.

Think about footwear carefully - there can be many steps if you are on show courts, especially on the seats higher up. Walking up and down many times unless you stay in your seat thtoughout the day.
Wimbledon is a fantastic day out, have a great time.

MustardBear · 13/06/2026 10:49

Me again, from one ‘Bear’ to another!

If it’s not quite so hot, I also got these in Petite, in various colours:

They are excellent. Despite being linen blend they don’t crease, so are good if seated for long periods of time. You could dress them up a bit for Wimbledon (or down for other things)
And wear comfy shoes, which are necessary for Wimbledon.

I love them!

I am astonished at the number of posters treating the OP like - really I don’t know what.

She is a grown adult!

Why are you all being so stupidly patronising? 🤔

And also suggesting she shouldn’t dress up! I go to Wimbledon every year and yes, some people are casual, but a significant number are extremely dressed up. I always dress up - it’s part of the fun! You definitely won’t look out of place on the more formal side.

I do echo people who have said you may be better waiting to see the weather forecast. Some years it’s roasting and some extremely chilly.

noidea02 · 13/06/2026 10:55

Honestly you do not need to dress up for Wimbledon! It depends on court and where you are sitting. If you are going to be exposed to sun do not wear a sundress - cover your shoulders or you will fry!! I’d wear thin comfy trousers and a top/t-shirt with trainers. And a sunhat that is not to wide brimmed or you’ll annoy everyone around you. I am lucky enough to go every year and honestly hardly anyone dresses up!! If you want a simple summer dress then great but nothing too smart or you’ll look totally over the top!!

auserna · 13/06/2026 10:56

Me.

Are you ok, @noidea02?

TubeScreamer · 13/06/2026 11:02

I will be wearing a dress if it is guaranteed to be very warm.
if not, jeans and a nice t-shirt with a warmer layer

comfortable shoes are key as there is a lot of walking.

Unfortunately, I'm not astonished. Patronising / 'no-one cares' comments from posters who clearly haven't read the op properly seem to be the norm for S&B these days. But that's for another thread.

I normally prefer separates to dresses because you double your chances of getting a decent fit. Assuming summer-ish temperatures, I think I'd probably wear a skirt I already own: ballerina length, full and swishy, in a cotton poplin. It's similar to this Toast one but NB this link is an example of the style and fabric I'm talking about. The shape is quite extravagant but the fabric is more utilitarian which makes it very versatile so would hopefully work for this kind of occasion. I've seen a few St Michael M&S ones on Vinted recently that are similar and probably better quality than Toast is these days.

I'd probably wear it with a long sleeved, linen or cotton shirt and stick a knitted sweater vest in my bag in case of lower temperatures. If I thought that wasn't special enough, I'd upgrade to a fancier shirt. My raincoat would be a dilemma as my nicest one isn't very weatherproof but I'm a poser so I'd probably wear it anyway and pack an umbrella. And a sunhat. Flat shoes but then I always wear them.

Sorry for the lack of links op as these are all things I own already.

Disclaimer: I've not been to Wimbledon but my son has so I'd probably run this past him in case I've missed any practicalities.

Yes??!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/06/2026 11:24

What I would wear:-

long floral short sleeve midi dress which is comfy and good to wear in hot and cooler weather (H&M a year or so before covid). Cardigan and or light jacket/blazer (slim jersey Whistles light pink). Maybe trainers maybe sandals, you do a lot of walking and that’s not even counting from tube. Umbrella, hat. Don’t carry too much. Quite a few shops at tube stations nearby to buy food/drink.

Babymamamama · 13/06/2026 11:37

You could tune into Queens which is on BBC iplayer currently for inspiration. Similar crowd and mixture of dressy and casual.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/06/2026 11:40

Oh my dress is shirt. But comfy.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 13/06/2026 12:33

The thing is, buying a special outfit for a big day, you can be totally wrong-footed by the weather. So you might find yourself at short notice reluctantly abandoning the gorgeous floaty frock you've invested in for the occasion , and having to wear something you don't feel special in or putting on a bulky rain layer that makes you feel frumpy and still leaves your legs cold.

Hence my adherence to really well-cut trousers, silk shirts, luxury layers and good accessories. To cover all eventualities with minimal tweaks. I love a linen suit too.

That’s a really good suggestion, I’ll do some people/outfit watching.

Are you on a show court (ie one with a roof)? It makes a huge difference, because for outside courts you need practicality, layers and a roomy bag.
For Centre or Number One, you can be a bit more dressed up, but do factor in the 15 minute walk to/from the Tube station.
Comfortable shoes, always.
Most people are not particularly dressed up (unless the corporates, and they are buried away) - if anything, don't overdress, or you will just look foolish.
It's a long day, if you arrive for gates opening, which I recommend - you could easily be there for 9 or 10 hours so comfort needs to be the absolute top priority.

Thank you , that’s good advice, I don’t know if we have court no 1 or centre court yet.

Thank you for the replies and links, I’ll work my way through them. It sounds as if a midi dress and flat shoes is the way to go.

I am very excited as I’ve never been to an event like this before and it’s on the day of a special birthday too.

I wore this with a woven belt from Reiss when I went last year. It was comfortable and cool when it was baking hot.

I go pretty much every year as I live nearby. Bottom line is - what you wear depends on context. This year I’m going as a part of a corporate thing with DH, so I’m wearing a nice dress. Sometimes I go with DH or mates solely for the tennis so we’re dressed to bake it out in the sun on a hot court if necessary - for that I might wear shorts and a tee. I’d go more elegant for centre court.

You say it’s a special day for you and DH this year - so it’s fine to wear something nice.

It’s weird that people are saying don’t dress up because I went last year and noticed how dressed up people were ( I was on court 1). Lots on dresses of all kinds and men in blazers. If you dress up you totally won’t be the only one.

What type of outfits do ladies wear when you do the corporate thing?

Enjoy @ForBusyOliveBear

I absolutely love the dress on the first link. I’ve been fortunate enough to go to Wimbledon 3 times. Last year I foolishly wore beautiful new sandals. I always wear a dress.
If you enjoy a drink don’t forget you can take a bottle of champagne each. (Apologies if you are teetotal). There’s loads of water top up points.
