What to wear to Wimbledon in your mid fifties

ForBusyOliveBear · 12/06/2026 21:19

I’m looking for suggestions of what to wear to Wimbledon, I’m trying to move away from my previous few summer’s uniform of midi dresses.
I am mid 50’s, need petite range and want to look as nice as I can as it’s a special day for my DH and I.

Just go away then.
Who do you think you are? I have every right to comment.

It will be my first time at Wimbledon , having tried for many years to get tickets, and I won't probably go again.

If somebody is only going because they want to look chic they are being extremely selfish because so many real tennis fans, who don't regard Wimbledon as a fashion show, would love to get the opportunity to have tickets.

Reducing the event to self obsession about clothing just devalues the while experience.

I am a massive tennis fan. I play 3-4 times a week, I have volunteered at many tennis events, watch every bit of tennis going. I still like to get dressed up to go to Wimbledon. It’s possible to do both FfS.

@AnonymityAnonymity no one here is devaluing the experience of Wimbledon. It's perfectly possible to love tennis and to want to look nice. It's also perfectly possible to love tennis and not care what you wear. Both completely valid. But this is Style and Beauty where people come specifically to talk about what they might wear to an event, so it's really daft to try and claim some sort of moral high ground and that somehow it's not okay to want to choose something special. God knows so much of, not just Mumsnet but the whole of human communication, is a bloody bunfight, do you really need to add to it by telling some woman you'll never meet that she shouldn't care what she wears to Wimbledon and if she does it means she can't actually really enjoy tennis? This is, surely you must understand if you reflect a little, arrant nonsense. I'm a person who takes things very seriously: I post on the Trump threads and the Ukraine threads etc etc. I also bloody love the light relief of talking about dresses, I love a nice dress and I absolutely adore seeing all the things people post, I find it pleasant and relaxing.
Don't spoil it. Don't assume people who like clothes are lightweights. Please. STYLE AND BEAUTY; it's right there in the name.
Very best wishes to you and I hope you enjoy watching Wimbledon on the TV, as will I. Very excited about it as I have been for more than 50 years now! It's more light relief from some of the world's horrors, made all the better because some people love to dress up for it.
Does Clare Balding present it wearing a sack? She does not! 😂

Edited for a bloody typo. I take typos seriously! 😂

OP is a woman in her 50s. Even if fashion is more important to her than the tennis I assume she has watched Wimbledon on TV and so must be aware of how spectators dress.

If she really cannot chose something that is comfortable, practical for the weather conditions, and looks good on her, without getting advice from the fashionistas on MN then it is pretty sad.

Reducing every event to what people are wearing is boring. The stereotype of women being obsessed with fashion and their appearance is alive and well.

Boring to you. The rest of us will carry on suggesting outfits no matter how many times you try and shame us into not doing.

Well that's my point actually: Why on earth is there a thread about a sporting event in Style and Beauty?

Absolutely ridiculous.

If you have been, you will know a lot of people are quite smartly dressed.

For me the mid calf dress with spiky heels look so beloved for decades in this country isn't always the chicest, and I think the op, as well, is trying to navigate an alternative.

As I said in my previous post this year will be my first Wimbledon. But I have been to Nottingham and Ilkley so I do have experience of tennis tournaments

And even at Nottingham there was a large percentage of people in the crowds towards the closing stages of the tournament that were more invested in consuming the large amounts of alcohol they had brought in with them rather than watching the tennis. Which is why we have opted to attend Wimbledon in the early stages of the competition because hopefully there will be more real tennis fans there rather than the spectators who are there to be seen in their fashionable clothes and those drinking vast amounts of wine etc courtside.

As a pp has said, it’s perfectly possible to love tennis and fashion.

Look at the players - generally very well dressed off the courts.

Of course it 's possible to like both.

But there are plenty of opportunities for fashionistas to indulge themselves in their dressing up hobby with out turning an event which is supposed to be about sporting ability into yet another blooming fashion show.

Why do they have to make every event about THEM and what they are wearing. Why can't they just go and enjoy the tennis ?

I think what you are really meaning is why can't I just go and enjoy the tennis without other posters making ME (@anonymity) feel it is about what I am wearing.

In which case, you still can. But others still want to factor in their clothing.

This is rather ironic coming from someone who has made another poster’s thread about them.

It’s bizarre to label someone asking about appropriate attire for a sporting event - see also Ascot - as a “fashionista” which OP clearly is not.

Why can’t you just go and enjoy the tennis and let others get on with it?

This angry bitter condemnation really isn’t necessary and is rather odd.

How is this thread about me? All I'm doing is questioning why OP felt the need to start a thread in Style and Beauty about a sporting event.

These days it is actually very difficult to go and enjoy events because of the way other people behave. Not just sporting events but every aspect of life is affected by the quite often selfish behaviour of others. This thread has made me wish I wasn't going to Wimbledon at all if OP is representative of the other spectators in thinking that what they are wearing is more important than the tennis.

And I feel strongly about this because firstly I am a tennis fan and secondly I cannot abide obsession with appearance when it's what a person is like in themselves, and how they behave, that matters. Not what they look like and not what they are wearing.

Aluna · 17/06/2026 09:48

I, I, I…

This thread is not about you and it’s not an appropriate place to air your personal beefs and hang ups. I’m not continuing this conversation.

And a nice hooded trench coat for inclement weather!

That trench is almost permanently sold out. Why? Because it’s such a rarity in the U.K. for women to find a well cut hooded coat suitable for smarter wear and not something to walk the dog in! Trenches there are in abundance but if you want truly midi length hooded and well cut, forget it.

As it happens that coat is not hooded as such; it has a removeable (and unfortunately perhaps overly warm) quilted insert.

Extraenergyneeded · 17/06/2026 09:52

Very comfortable shoes and something that is quick when going to loo ( there will be queues!)

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 17/06/2026 09:54

Weddings are about people making a lifelong commitment to each other … so it’s crass to think about what to wear?

funerals are about saying goodbye to someone … so it’s crass to put any thought into what to wear ?

Divebar2021 · 17/06/2026 10:32

Yes let’s not ever think about what to wear…. For anything.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 17/06/2026 10:52

I do have some sympathy with Anonymity: the furious over-marketing and profit gouging of sporting events, pop concerts, etc has left them unaffordable to many. And yes, there are people attending who have no interest in or allegiance to the sport/band - they are just going for a good day out, usually free to them as a ‘hospitality ‘ invite, and only interested in the food and drink on offer. That is worthy of another thread.

equally, there are people who love the sport, and so shell out on hospitality tickets to make sure they can go , have a good view, and see what is on paper a good match - I have done this at Queen’s and other tournaments .

i’m sure the OP is the same : celebrating a special day at an event she loves and in clothes that reflect that

Thank you for that, @TemporarilyCantDoMyself - perfectly put (&, importantly, typo free 😁!).

I am angered by a lot of things in life - but people taking the time to dress nicely for Wimbledon (& perhaps drinking a bit too much rosé on their special day out!!) is not one of them.

It's a much plainer style, but I noticed this Massimo Dutti one a while ago & quite liked it. I also liked this And/Or one at John Lewis, though it is slightly oversized.

Well said. I will be fashionable whilst watching a game I love and play at the same time.
I will also spend way too much money (and already have as I bid for my tickets in charity auction).
DH and I will have a fab day and will make the absolute most of it...and if he's good, I might buy him a new outfit too.

I don't think it's "peak jumpsuit" anymore, so it might well be the case that there are fewer in the shops - I've no idea. But if so, I think that's because they're seen as quite a classic piece of clothing now, rather than high fashion?

Me+Em are well-known for theirs, as are Reiss, & there are plenty on websites like COS, Toast, Whistles, Boden, M&S etc. There were lots to be seen in Milan fashion week. And at Victoria Beckham, MaxMara, The Frankie Shop, Farm Rio, Zimmermann ...

I don't really wear them these days as I have too much weight around my middle, & I dislike the children's TV presenter styles ... but I do like the elegant 70s-ish ones! If I lose some weight, I might even try on this VB for Gap version!! But I do also need to get past my fear of the zip getting stuck when I'm in the loo & dying for a pee ... 😶

What a hideous ‘outfit’. Looking on my phone I had to zoom in on picture as couldn’t make out if the person wearing it was a bloke or a woman. Looks like something a mechanic would wear. Go Grease Lightening!

Floisme · 17/06/2026 13:52

I would have sympathy @AnonymityAnonymity about ticket distribution for Wimbledon if you directed your anger at the event organisers. But when you take it out on someone who has legitimately bought a ticket then I'm disinclined to take what you say seriously.

You might also have had a point if the op had posted her question on a sports board. But I think choosing Style and Beauty was perfectly appropriate and she also made it clear that it was a special occasion for her so you're the one coming across as not reading the room.

As for posting 7 times (at the last count) about people having the temerity to enjoy something you disapprove of, I'm reminded of my 11 year-old self getting into a rage because people kept on buying 'Release Me' by Engelbert Humperdinck.

I won't be discussing this with you any further because the thread has been derailed enough as it is. (In fact I'm not sure I'm doing the right thing in even responding but here I am.)

Well i will agree to differ with you.

But I still mantain attending a sporting event has no place on a Style and Beauty Board.
What next? People attending cricket matches, football matches, rugby matches etc for advice on what to wear?
It's beyond ridiculous.

And the only reason I have posted as many times as I have is to answer people who have addressed me directly. It wasn't my intention to enter a dialogue on this board because I know from past experience the posters on Style and Beauty reaction when people have a different point of view about their overwhelming concerns with what to wear.
