What to wear to Wimbledon in your mid fifties

ForBusyOliveBear · 12/06/2026 21:19

I’m looking for suggestions of what to wear to Wimbledon, I’m trying to move away from my previous few summer’s uniform of midi dresses.
I am mid 50’s, need petite range and want to look as nice as I can as it’s a special day for my DH and I.

Take a fan too.

I found some of the answers a bit strange too. I’m on the right board asking for advice about something that is important to me. I’m not someone who would wear an Ascot outfit to a school sports day.

It’s nothing you’ve said or done op. Unfortunately it’s a feature of the board these days. Hope it’s not spoiled the thread for you.

@ForBusyOliveBear If you'd said you had tickets for Hospitality and the lunch the replies would have been different.

Do you have seats for Centre Court or Court 1?

I thought that you were just 'going to Wimbledon' and would perhaps be sitting on the outside courts or wandering around the site.

It makes a massive difference if you're a VIP and having lunch at the club etc.

I would never have thought of that so I’ve just ordered one from Amazon.

Yes. I was going to post something like this as well.

I thought it was someone who had never been to Wimbledon before and wanted to know what most spectators wore. It is obviously different if it is a corporate event.

I agree with a PP not to take a big sunhat otherwise you will obscure the view of people behind you. The suggestion to take a sun visor is a much better one.

@ForBusyOliveBear I hope you get warm (not hot) and dry weather and enjoy the day.

ForBusyOliveBear · 14/06/2026 08:41

I have ordered a selection of dresses and jumpsuits from brands such as Phase Eight, many are similar to the helpful links.

I also already have some cropped palazzo pants in a white/cream colour and blouse from River Island which is a back up option.

I will update when they arrive.

I am currently looking for some new wide fit post toe sandals too and will break them in before I go.

Thank you for all your help, especially for the recommendations for places that do petite ranges.

It’s just a sporting event. Most people dress for the weather not to look glamorous

this really isn’t the case in the hospitality and members areas. Plus plenty of others are dressing up even for a grounds pass these days as they’ve seen on social media etc.

Well it would have helped if OP had first mentioned in post 1 rather than post 11 that she is in a VIP hospitality suite.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 14/06/2026 09:17

Hope you have a great time OP. I’ve been a few times and loved it.

There are people off to Wimbledon on my train everyday during the tournament. Nice jackets and sun hats reign. My key takeaway is everyone seems to have a very nice hat, men included.

I said in my fourth post that I need to dress up and in my first post that I want something nice to wear as it’s a special day.

There’s been so many aggy posts on this thread for a completely reasonable request.

It’s ok, there are on lots of threads that go like this.
I’m on one where someone is asking for suggestions where to buy a holiday home and most replies are that they would never buy one, how is that helpful in any way?

BlondeFool · 14/06/2026 09:41

I saw that thread. Bonkers!

I’ve got a few lovely dresses from Phase 8. Also look at Monsoon. The sale is good!

Divebar2021 · 14/06/2026 09:46

The weather is so up and down isn’t it? It makes it so much harder to plan what to wear. Last year was incredibly hot and play was being stopped at Wimbledon because people were fainting left, right and centre. Alternatively it could be throwing it down.

Sunloungerhogger · 14/06/2026 10:01

Sometimes I’m lucky enough to be taken by a friend to No.1 Court. Last year (and luckily for us seats therefore are in the shade) I wore a black sun dress (one of those mixed media ones with a black sleeveless jersey bodice and long cotton skirt to it - with pockets!), cream linen relaxed blazer, gold strappy flat sandals and a nice handbag. I felt elegant but in a fairly relaxed way, cool and comfortable.

Exactly! Would have totally changed the way a lot of people (myself included!) answered!!

I love fans! I used to buy the cheap paper ones from the Chinese supermarket, as I could get several in different colours & have one to match each outfit ...

There is now a huge range, from cheap to expensive designer ones, available - so I would take full advantage of that & buy one to match whatever outfit you decide on!

Probably a bit ridiculous to admit, but it actually gives me great pleasure, on a hot & sticky day, to have a fan that ties in perfectly with what I'm wearing ...!! (Though if there's a place to admit that & not be laughed at, it's here!!!)

You can even get a Gucci one ...

@EleanorMc67 I ALWAYS enjoy your posts, but with the fans you have surpassed yourself; I had no idea one could still get so many gorgeous handheld proper old fashioned non-mechanical fans. What a joy! Thank you.
Do you have a collection of them? I'd love to see some pics of some that you own. 🤩

EleanorMc67 · 14/06/2026 12:40

Thank you!! Now you've sent me down a "fans that I have known & loved" rabbit hole!!

Back in my student days, I used to have a few beautiful Edwardian/Victorian ones that I'd picked up quite cheaply in antique shops - the kind with feathers/mother-of-pearl etc? I had them displayed on my bedroom wall. But they're long gone - I think the moths got the feathers on some (along with an ostrich feather boa) 😬!!!

The Chinese paper ones I have are now very battered, so I feel a splurge coming on ... And yes, there are SO many! I shall let you know what I purchase ...!!!

Speaking of fans - and with apologies for potential derail - has anyone been to the Fan Museum in London? I keep meaning to go.

https://www.thefanmuseum.org.uk/

I have not - but it's on my (very long) list for my next visit to London!!

oviraptor21 · 14/06/2026 13:00

I love the second RoandZo dress posted earlier - the wide green and white stripe one - that you liked. That would be perfect.

I think PP must have overlooked that you said in your first post that you wanted to look as nice as you can because it is a special day. To me that means dressing up as much as the occasion will allow - which at Wimbledon is about as dressy a day occasion as you can get.

Fwiw I always use an event which suits dressing up to do just that because otherwise when would I? I like dressing up - it's part of the fun. I always wear a dress to any tennis whether it's Wimbledon, Queens, Eastbourne.

The weather forecast is currently looking very good. Anything between 20⁰C and 27⁰C so hopefully no raincoats or umbrellas needed.

Miranda65 · 14/06/2026 13:18

OP, now that you've clarified that you are going via hospitality, it absolutely makes all the difference!
Bear in mind that most people don't go to Wimbledon this way, hence all the advice about practicality. In fact, 500 people on Centre Court will have been camping overnight, and just had a quick rub down with a wet wipe, so Wimbledon really does accommodate all kinds of spectators, in all types of clothing - that is the beauty of it.

I'm rubbish at fashion, so no advice.
But still have a hat and comfy shoes (even if just a spare pair in your bag)!

Floisme · 14/06/2026 14:07

I think the practical advice was perfectly reasonable - I offered that too. What I think was questionable was the patronising attitude towards the op wanting to dress up when she had clearly stated in her opening post that it was a special day for her and her husband and that she wanted to look as nice as she could.
