I’m 38 and don’t know what’s cool and what’s not.
Are these cool?

If you’re a bit preppy or quirky try will look fine, if not they might look a bit off but none of that matters as long as you like them!

Still… missing… the point

Still...not

I don’t understand the hate for these sandals.

The fisherman style has been trendy for a while now. It’s never seemed very controversial to me? Are they any worse than all the other chunky styles that have been around over the last five years?

Also, I dislike this narrative that says only young and slim people can wear X or Y. There are plenty of young, slim people with no sense of style at all, and plenty of older, averagely sized people who could style these shoes - or any other trendy look - and look good. Being stylish or trendy isn’t the preserve of the young or slim.

You also need to be tall and willowy according to MN. It's nonsense.

I'd like to see some suggestions for stylish sandals from all the naysayers

Bang on trend. V comfortable. Leather.
Go for it!

To me they look like very old men’s sandals, but there’s no accounting for what’s fashionable today. It seems like the uglier the better, if barrel leg trousers are anything to go by.

Ofgs MN Glamour magazine is a long established fashion magazine.

Paramaribo2025 · 24/05/2026 13:26

I wouldn't wear them and I hate to say it but I wouldn't want anyone I know to see me wearing them.

Fizbosshoes · 24/05/2026 13:42

They can be ugly and fashionable, the 2 things are not mutually exclusive.

The uneducated/uninformed among us would look at them and think they look like something a retired vicar would wear (with socks) circa 1980, and deem it unbelievably uncool...without actually realising the person was actually really on trend.

I live in a commuter town and work in a not fashionable area of London, and dont read fashion magazines, so this trend has completely passed me by.
The thread has educated me that they are in fact fashionable but since a) im not fashionable and b) imo they are really ugly, it wouldnt really change my opinion on whether i would buy them...but it has been educational to know they are actually trendy!

She looks completely cool. I don’t possess that level of coolness. I’d just look like a frump.

But it's her attitude. She wouldn't give 2 seconds to the "eww frumpy" etc comments on here.

I love barrel leg trousers. So do a lot of other people judging by the amount in the shops and in the wild.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 24/05/2026 17:46

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER Fashion IS about today! The fisherman’s sandal is making a comeback! Keep up. You sound like a boring granny.

Topseyt123 · 24/05/2026 19:37

I love them.

Comfortable footwear is what I want. They look comfortable so if I tried them and found that they were then I'd get them. I couldn't give a crap about fashion/style.

I think she's just a random woman snapped in Milan during Milan Fashion Week. MN is having a fit of vapours about G l a m o u r m a g a z I n e so hatorgal and are on the naughty step for linking to the article.

NaiceHazelHare · 24/05/2026 21:38

Honestly, these are just classic fisherman’s sandals, in good quality leather. Been around forever, and anyone of every age (literally 1-100) can wear them and look good. They are reasonably fashionable, but definitely not super trendy (I live in Peckham, see what the art students wear, know I could never be that cool).

I don’t understand how anyone can hate them or anyone can think they’re the height of fashion. They’re simple leather sandals 😂 Honestly, Mumsnet is nuts. Can people post what sandals they think are decent?

Goditsmemargaret · 24/05/2026 21:58

I honestly don't know why some people visit this board.

"Oh they're ugly... No"
"If you like them, wear them, it's irrelevant if they're fashionable."
"They look like they are for old people, there are much nicer sporty sandals (vomit) around now"
"Following fashion magazines is pathetic"

Ok obviously I'm paraphrasing but seriously why come to this area of Mumsnet?

I don't go onto gardening forums and tell people they're saddos worrying about plants.

I see it all the time.

A woman posted one day about wanting to wear something sexy for a night away with her husband. There was a myriad of replies about how cringe this was.

I like the sandals, I wish we could have more replies from fashionable people discussing how to style then.

tartyflette · 24/05/2026 23:07

They remind me of the sandals my highly uncool 50-something German teacher used to wear in the 70s. With very thick denier stockings.
(as in she taught German rather than she was a German national. )

It sounds as if you expect only people to post on here who like all fashion trends and to agree with you. That's not very sensible. People are allowed to like or not like eg skinny jeans or fisherman's sandals.
