What should I wear to a black tie celebrity wedding?

Fushcia · 12/05/2026 20:40

A friend is getting married in NYC later this year. The dress code is black tie. The venue has not been disclosed and will not be disclosed until the day of the event to avoid media attention as they are within the celebrity sphere (I know them through family and am very much not from this world)
Any advice on something suitably glamorous given there may be a few A listers present and I don’t want to look out of place? I’m 5’7, size 8-10. Budget not really an issue

Is there much point in a studio in Ireland? Is the op in Ireland?

I’m not in Ireland! But to be honest they are not quite my style in any case.

Odd comment. There are things like post and couriers. Website says

These are fabulous options.

I agree! I also have a black tie event this summer and I’m stealing one of those exquisite options!

Sidebeforeself · 13/05/2026 12:21

Will you be able to tell us who the celebrity was afterwards?

What has the model got in her hand? Some very expensive clutch, no doubt, but it looks like a pack of wet wipes.

But that is very booby! Things you might want to think about:
How are you getting there? NY can be rainy at that time of year
Is there a cocktail hour before the wedding? That’s very common in US.If so, find out whether you are expected to change ( ridiculous I know but as its a high end event that might be the case)

American here. Yes there will be a cocktail hour, no you will not be expected to change.

Look in July. Your selection for an autumn-appropriate gown will be 100x what it is right now as that’s when autumn/winter RTW will hit shops. There are a few gems on Moda Operandi, but hidden between what feels like 1000s of spring-appropriate dresses. Also, I would take two dresses - one for hot weather, one for normal fall weather. I lived in Manhattan for a couple of years and the weather in September and October could be gorgeous and mild or still 80+F. They had some term for it (hot weather in fall) but I can’t remember it. One year was just dreadful for having the hottest October on record (at that point; it’s probably been beaten years ago now). We were still using our air con on Halloween!

Indian Summer. Hot weather in the Fall. And yes it can be chilly and raining, or sunny and humid in October. I would go with a halter type dress and have a wrap to wear with it.

If budget is not an issue and you already have the height and figure then I would find something by Pnina Tornai. Her gowns are best sellers on the show Say Yes to the Dress at Kleinfeld.

I would steer away from Pnina for a NYC wedding guest. Her dresses are sort of Vegas showgirl more than NYC sophisticate. I am an avid watcher of SYTTD and the gilrs who are buying her gowns are not from NYC.

This one, suggested by @Levithecat is very on point

I do agree with @SpuytenDuyvil - sleek, lots of skin, and yes, heels.

Gorgeous, but too close to Halloween. If you wear this in October people will think it is your Halloween costume. Resembles the Disney Evil Queen in Snow White. No, I am not kidding.

Triskellion75 · 13/05/2026 14:37

I'm only here to find out about the celebs.

GodSavetheJean · 13/05/2026 14:48

American who has been to many NYC weddings. Black is fine. NYers live in black. The Victoria Beckham or the first teal halter dress are perfect. It can be warm in October so go for a halter or sleeveless dress with a wrap for the church (they are all chilly). Definitely go for a sleeker style, nothing even faintly garden party or floral. Dramatic is fine but again avoid anything that might be construed as a Halloween costume because Halloween parties happen all month in the US. NO HATS.
MOST US weddings are ceremony, cocktail hour, full reception, all in order with no break in between and you don't change your outfit. Occasionally there will be a ceremony, then a break of a few hours before cocktails then full reception. In that case you can have an outfit change (dressy church clothes for ceremony, then black tie for the rest), but since they specify Black Tie I would think it is all in sequence without a break.
US weddings in NY that specify Black Tie are very formal. Full length, heels, blowout, etc.
The cocktail reception the night before is to welcome the guests. I would expect it to be "Cocktail attire" which is when you wear your little black dress, but bring a smart casual outfit in case they do something casual like a BBQ place, which you see occasionally because they want it to be casual and fun.

I love Suzanne Neville, Suzannah London and Monique Lhullier. Pay a visit to Harrods’ ladies wear evening section, you’ll find something wonderful there. The aforementioned brands have lovely boutiques in London that will also be able to help you, and the experience is lovely. Emilia Wickstead/Temperley/Needle and Thread will have more fun/whimsy options too if you love beading. I’ve got a couple of gorgeous needle and thread floor length dresses I’ve worn to black tie events and they always look fab.

Nothing to add except that I love all of those options, especially the first yellow one.

The yellow one is gorgeous

I just wish I had some weddings to go to! 😭

PropertyD · 13/05/2026 17:40

You will come back and say who it was after the wedding won’t you??

EleanorMc67 · 13/05/2026 17:57

I can see why you suggested the first three in relation to a black-tie celeb-sprinkled wedding in Manhattan. They fit the kind of minimal sleek chic aesthetic that would seem appropriate.

But it surprises me that the first three could all easily be by the same designer, as they're so similar - yet aren't. It makes me think it's actually an overly common "look", & lots of other guests could be wearing something similar. In fact, I could imagine three bridesmaids all toning in like blueberry, pistachio & banana ice-cream in their pastel draped/ruched floor-length gowns ...!

If the wedding is an autumn evening, maybe a stronger/richer/warmer colour would be more appropriate, even if it is warm weather.

Also, if I was attending a NY wedding, I wouldn't want to choose an American designer. One is a Spanish London-based designer, but the other three are New York- & LA-based. Too recognisable & there'd possibly even be the danger of someone wearing the same. As it is, I think the potential for others wearing a similar look is quite high.

(It also annoys me how frequently viscose & nylon are used in designer gowns!)

I just picked the dresses I liked & would wear 😆

Catholic upbringing means it’s drilled into to me to cover the shoulders somewhat for a wedding!

EleanorMc67 · 13/05/2026 18:28

I like the simplicity of the gold Françoise one, & the sustainability credentials of the brand. It's an elegant dress. I like some other Bernadette dresses better than that one.

I would also look at British/European clothing sites rather than a NY-based website that caters for guests attending high-end events like this. Probably also cheaper & quicker to order French & Belgian labels from Europe/the UK, rather than America! Otherwise the dress will have crossed the Atlantic four times ...!!

And it's better IMO to go for non-American brands.

Edited

Catholic upbringing here too - it had the opposite effect on me, to my granny's annoyance ... 😁!!

(She used to be the housekeeper for the parish priests, & still wore a lace mantilla in church to cover her head when praying ...!!)

TipsyLaird · 12/05/2026 21:25

Good that it's a London-based designer. The shape is quite reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe's dress in The Seven Year Itch. And it's a really striking colour ... but isn't it a bit too ballgown on the bottom, & also rather too exposed?

Completely backless, you can see the model's tit tape in the video - & imagine if you dropped a canapé down the front ...!!

Another one where they don't state any fabric composition details. It's not silk, it will be synthetic - but if H&M can provide full details of what a £22.99 dress is made of, why can't others ...?! Especially when you're spending many times that.

If you like that one, OP, you might want to look at Hasanova's website directly?

Too booby - & too much skin, I think.
