What should I wear to a black tie celebrity wedding?

Fushcia · 12/05/2026 20:40

A friend is getting married in NYC later this year. The dress code is black tie. The venue has not been disclosed and will not be disclosed until the day of the event to avoid media attention as they are within the celebrity sphere (I know them through family and am very much not from this world)
Any advice on something suitably glamorous given there may be a few A listers present and I don’t want to look out of place? I’m 5’7, size 8-10. Budget not really an issue

I like this, not sure the model is doing it any favours but I love the shape and the olive colour.

I’m going to say Harry & Zoe would love this dress 😉https://www.selfridges.com/GB/en/product/victoria-beckham-isabella-satin-gown_R04619114/?utm_source=chatgpt.com#colour=Cinnabar%20Red

LOVE the colour and it’s covered enough for church.
Also it’s not ‘a summer dress so I’m freezing cold’ .

Say what you like about VB - her dresses are lovely. Claudia was wearing a gorgeous dress on Strictly last year - I googled it & baulked at the price it was VB

I don’t know for sure but assume not as there is a separate cocktail reception the day before (I also need a dress for that!).

Ooh thats a gorgeous dress

chargingdock · 12/05/2026 21:57

As an American, I can confirm that black is NOT really fine for a wedding

I have been to a few American weddings where there was a lot of black, all black tie though.

chargingdock · 12/05/2026 21:58

@Fushcia I had selected that but didn’t know if it was too expensive, I know you said no budget but it’s a lot . It’s gorgeous!

Galaxylights · 12/05/2026 21:58

TipsyLaird · 12/05/2026 21:25

That is actually gorgeous.

DilettanteRedRagger · 12/05/2026 21:59

Look in July. Your selection for an autumn-appropriate gown will be 100x what it is right now as that’s when autumn/winter RTW will hit shops. There are a few gems on Moda Operandi, but hidden between what feels like 1000s of spring-appropriate dresses. Also, I would take two dresses - one for hot weather, one for normal fall weather. I lived in Manhattan for a couple of years and the weather in September and October could be gorgeous and mild or still 80+F. They had some term for it (hot weather in fall) but I can’t remember it. One year was just dreadful for having the hottest October on record (at that point; it’s probably been beaten years ago now). We were still using our air con on Halloween!

chargingdock · 12/05/2026 22:04

True, a much wider selection will be available later.

IamEarthymama · 12/05/2026 22:10

Fushcia some gorgeous suggestions already.
I love the deep wine dress and the style of the cape dresses; they always remind of really glamorous movie stars from the Golden Age.

(I have stopped watching award events as the clothes are mostly outrageous, with the occasional'gown' worthy of the name)

Will you please come back and tell
us what you have chosen even if it is after the event?
What a lovely opportunity to look your best and have fun!☺️

Ivy Gown - Lavender Blue | Dresses & Jumpsuits | Temperley London – Temperley London (UK) https://share.google/9Zxepd6Bq31NISTsQ

You might find Temperley a bit fussy? But they do some really pretty dresses which would look great on someone with your figure!

Roksanda might be an option?

This is terrific!

Nushi21 · 12/05/2026 22:22

If budget is not an issue and you already have the height and figure then I would find something by Pnina Tornai. Her gowns are best sellers on the show Say Yes to the Dress at Kleinfeld.

Ponderingwindow · 12/05/2026 22:22

Black at a wedding may be regional. Every wedding I have attended has seen plenty of black dresses. All of those were midwest, mountain, or west coast. I’ve been to two weddings in the south and there were fewer black dresses, but still a good number. Many guests were from other areas though.

I’ve never been to an nyc wedding. Always thought the proper black tie formal gown type of affair looked beautiful.

oneoneone · 12/05/2026 22:23

I'm a native New Yorker and I've seen loads of black at weddings, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. October is a weird month climate-wise, it can be very warm or quite cool, so I wouldn't go with a heavy winter-type dress, but I'd plan on some kind of wrap if sleeveless.

I've just bought this for a wedding in September https://www.mytheresa.com/gb/en/women/zimmermann-luna-bandeau-jersey-gown-pink-p01154430

And I wore this to one recently

That’s gorgeous.
I’ve always found American weddings are much dressier than UK ones.

@oneoneone I thought Zimmerman too. These are reduced but perfect.

What about this, OP?

@MeetMeOnTheCorner Those are lovely, but more British wedding. They're a bit too ruffly and flouncy for NYC black tie

SpuytenDuyvil · 12/05/2026 22:49

This dress is glorious. I do not think you have to worry about outshining the bride. She will probably be in white. Black tie in NYC is lots of skin and never a hat or fascinator. Heels and a nice clutch. Match your lip to a color you are wearing, if you do wear one. Smooth hair.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 12/05/2026 22:51

I've just discovered Solace London and I'm torn between these two (available in other colours).

This one, suggested by @Levithecat is very on point

I do agree with @SpuytenDuyvil - sleek, lots of skin, and yes, heels.
