What should I wear to a black tie celebrity wedding?

Fushcia · 12/05/2026 20:40

A friend is getting married in NYC later this year. The dress code is black tie. The venue has not been disclosed and will not be disclosed until the day of the event to avoid media attention as they are within the celebrity sphere (I know them through family and am very much not from this world)
Any advice on something suitably glamorous given there may be a few A listers present and I don’t want to look out of place? I’m 5’7, size 8-10. Budget not really an issue

I'm a native New Yorker and I've seen loads of black at weddings, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. October is a weird month climate-wise, it can be very warm or quite cool, so I wouldn't go with a heavy winter-type dress, but I'd plan on some kind of wrap if sleeveless.

I've just bought this for a wedding in September https://www.mytheresa.com/gb/en/women/zimmermann-luna-bandeau-jersey-gown-pink-p01154430

And I wore this to one recently

This version of the Saloni one is beautiful

What has the model got in her hand? Some very expensive clutch, no doubt, but it looks like a pack of wet wipes.

Just been to pick up her prescription I think

The Victoria Beckham one, looks perfect.

Given its black tie I think it needs to be long. Generally I prefer unfussy clothing, no frills or significant patterns, in jewel colours or deep blue/black (black may not be right for a wedding though). Happy to stand out for being stylish but not for showing huge volumes of cleavage or leg

For an American black tie wedding you definitely need to wear a formal long dress.

Black is fine, as are other dark or jewel colours.
As it's October you could go for velvet... but I would look for something in a crepe or maybe stretch satin.

Stay away from any floral or pastel chiffon-ey dresses, thats too summery and not formal enough.

I would look for something dramatic with clean lines.

What fun!

Omg that's gorgeous

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 13/05/2026 00:36

@CharlotteStreetW1 My DD is a bridesmaid later this year and is wearing a solace dress. It’s very heavy! It’s not one of those but if op likes plain and structured dresses, they fit the bill.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 13/05/2026 00:38

@oneoneone OP I assume is British! Maybe we don’t have to copy the Americans for once? It’s better to be yourself but might be a bit chilly for October? Need a fur jacket!

BlissfullyBoring · 13/05/2026 00:45

Fushcia · 12/05/2026 21:49

I don’t know for sure but assume not as there is a separate cocktail reception the day before (I also need a dress for that!).

Is this dress too full on? www.modaoperandi.com/women/p/marmar-halim/m2704-2/710351

That’s a gorgeous dress.

This is a gorgeous colour. Definitely a maybe although I worry I’d be cold

It’s often still really warm in mid-October - I wouldn’t worry about being cold!

This is terrific!

It is a bit fussy though .
I love the teal halterneck

I just wore this to a fancy event and had so many nice comments! It’s a stunning dress

@MeetMeOnTheCorner Those are lovely, but more British wedding. They're a bit too ruffly and flouncy for NYC black tie

This dress is stunning, I’d love to see it in real life. And how fancy would you feel in Balmain!

ChuffingNoraah · 13/05/2026 07:36

I second whoever suggested Solace London, their dresses are absolutely fantastic, I was lucky enough to pick up two in a sample sale and wish I’d bought more and sorted myself for black tie for life!

I love this too! I think the orange colour would look much better on me though as muted colours tend to wash me out. Is orange too intense for a wedding?

I think orange is fine for a wedding, could you try both? see how the colours look in real life, and with glam makeup?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 13/05/2026 08:14

@Fushcia Yes. DD did that and you get a feel for the fabrics and how they hang on you. They are structural and DDs is stunning. Hers is navy but plenty of brighter options! There’s more choice on line and their web site is very good.

Confirming that American 'black tie' definitely needs a long dress. You can wear a cocktail dress to most 'black tie' events in the UK (and obviously to your cocktail reception the day before in your case) but American black tie is full length.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 13/05/2026 09:17

I have nothing to offer but have bookmarked to look at the very lovely dresses.

No, the orange would be fine!

It's far too fussy and the high split is awful - they're trying to sexify up a long floral dress.
